Guys, Christmas came early this year!

I might hate melons, but I most certainly do not hate SPAM, as anyone who has read me long enough knows. So, when Kwik Trip announced a new breakfast sandwich starring my beloved canned meat, I couldn’t wait to try it.
Last Wednesday, on my way to work, I got my chance, thanks to a Dunkin’ screwup. I was miles away, well into my Madison commute, when I discovered they’d left the turkey sausage off my turkey sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich. Minor detail there. The English muffin was way too bready without that sausage patty to balance it out, so I rolled down my window and tossed the whole thing into some farmer’s field, figuring a hungry crow or raccoon would eat it and the bag would decompose in two-to-five months anyway, so what the hell.
(I did not do that. Litterbugs suck.)
Luckily, I was passing through Cambridge, so I decided to run into Kwik Trip and grab something else for breakfast. Lo and behold, there it was: the SPAMwich. My eyes got about as wide as Ralphie’s on Christmas morning when he spotted the elusive official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle, with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time, that he’d longed for. I swear, a ray of light from heaven was cast down on the SPAMwich, illuminating it in glorious wonder for me to behold. Or maybe it was just the light bulb in the hot bar, I don’t really know, but the point was, I could now SPAM it up!
After taking that photo above through the windshield of my car, of course. I was already thinking of this blog post as I held the almighty SPAMwich aloft. It’s a sickness, I know.
God, I hope nobody saw me.
How was it, you’re wondering? Kwik Trip posted this to their social media accounts:

And they’re not far off the mark. Granted, I’m more SPAM-obsessed than your average Joe, so there might be a bit of bias here, but this was one of the best breakfast sandwiches I’ve had in a long time. The SPAM patty was just the right size to complement the egg and cheese, and it was all lovingly tucked inside a buttery croissant, which added an extra layer of fluffiness. So freakin’ good. And kudos to Kwik Trip for yet another inventive take on food. It’s even better than the blueberry donut-flavored potato chips, if you can believe that. They say the SPAMwich is a limited-time item, but if they don’t add it to their permanent rotation of hot bar breakfast sandwiches, I might just cry.
By the way, Dunkin’ really makes you jump through hoops for a lousy $4.68 credit. They wanted screen shots of my mobile order and assigned an official Case # to my claim, which all seems a tad excessive if you ask me. Hardly worth the effort, but I’m a sucker for accountability, so I shall persevere until said funds have been credited back to my account. Sometimes, you just gotta Fight the Man.
Plan B was a no-goat
Yesterday, it rained. And rained and rained. And 18 hours after the clouds first opened up Friday afternoon, we had a whole lot of rain in the bucket. Over four inches, which seems amazing.

July was so bone-dry, we got more rain in the first five hours of August than we saw in the entire previous month. My brown, crispy lawn rejoices, and I’m sure the farmers are happy, too. Some of those cornstalks were looking bedraggled. Now I can take a break from lugging around hoses and sprinklers every morning, too. Yay for an extra 15 minutes in my day.
Our original Saturday plan was to focus on yard work, but with a steady, soaking rain falling most of the day, we decided to swing by Goat Fest in Jefferson, a fun event we have enjoyed in the past. But after getting drenched crossing a parking lot, we decided it wasn’t worth the effort, and if we really have our hearts set on seeing goats, we’ll be going to the state fair in a couple of weeks, so we quickly came up with a much drier Plan C: lunch at a new-to-us tavern in the middle of a corn field (naturally). I want to call it a dive bar, but it had wood beams across the ceiling, everything was way too clean and polished, and the food was a notch above your typical pub fare. I got a pot roast sandwich with grilled onions and pepper jack on sourdough, and Tara ordered a crab salad sandwich on a croissant. We were impressed with both.
“This place would make a great Friday night hangout spot!” I said to Tara. “Like Shanahan’s in Vancouver.” Ahh, sweet memories. We were semi-regulars at Shanny’s and so fond of the place, I stopped in again for old time’s sake during my April visit.
As fun as that would be, the truth is, we rarely hang out anywhere other than home on most Friday evenings. Which is pretty nice and a lot cheaper anyway, but I guess if we ever do find ourselves itchin’ to get out of the house and do something fun in a cornfield some Friday night, we’ll know where to go. I mean, they even have fried pickles!
It’s a match made in heaven.
