Guys, Christmas came early this year!

I might hate melons, but I most certainly do not hate SPAM, as anyone who has read me long enough knows. So, when Kwik Trip announced a new breakfast sandwich starring my beloved canned meat, I couldn’t wait to try it.

Last Wednesday, on my way to work, I got my chance, thanks to a Dunkin’ screwup. I was miles away, well into my Madison commute, when I discovered they’d left the turkey sausage off my turkey sausage, egg, and cheese sandwich. Minor detail there. The English muffin was way too bready without that sausage patty to balance it out, so I rolled down my window and tossed the whole thing into some farmer’s field, figuring a hungry crow or raccoon would eat it and the bag would decompose in two-to-five months anyway, so what the hell.

(I did not do that. Litterbugs suck.)

Luckily, I was passing through Cambridge, so I decided to run into Kwik Trip and grab something else for breakfast. Lo and behold, there it was: the SPAMwich. My eyes got about as wide as Ralphie’s on Christmas morning when he spotted the elusive official Red Ryder, carbine action, 200-shot, range model air rifle, with a compass in the stock and this thing that tells time, that he’d longed for. I swear, a ray of light from heaven was cast down on the SPAMwich, illuminating it in glorious wonder for me to behold. Or maybe it was just the light bulb in the hot bar, I don’t really know, but the point was, I could now SPAM it up!

After taking that photo above through the windshield of my car, of course. I was already thinking of this blog post as I held the almighty SPAMwich aloft. It’s a sickness, I know.

God, I hope nobody saw me.

How was it, you’re wondering? Kwik Trip posted this to their social media accounts:

And they’re not far off the mark. Granted, I’m more SPAM-obsessed than your average Joe, so there might be a bit of bias here, but this was one of the best breakfast sandwiches I’ve had in a long time. The SPAM patty was just the right size to complement the egg and cheese, and it was all lovingly tucked inside a buttery croissant, which added an extra layer of fluffiness. So freakin’ good. And kudos to Kwik Trip for yet another inventive take on food. It’s even better than the blueberry donut-flavored potato chips, if you can believe that. They say the SPAMwich is a limited-time item, but if they don’t add it to their permanent rotation of hot bar breakfast sandwiches, I might just cry.

By the way, Dunkin’ really makes you jump through hoops for a lousy $4.68 credit. They wanted screen shots of my mobile order and assigned an official Case # to my claim, which all seems a tad excessive if you ask me. Hardly worth the effort, but I’m a sucker for accountability, so I shall persevere until said funds have been credited back to my account. Sometimes, you just gotta Fight the Man.

Plan B was a no-goat

Yesterday, it rained. And rained and rained. And 18 hours after the clouds first opened up Friday afternoon, we had a whole lot of rain in the bucket. Over four inches, which seems amazing.

July was so bone-dry, we got more rain in the first five hours of August than we saw in the entire previous month. My brown, crispy lawn rejoices, and I’m sure the farmers are happy, too. Some of those cornstalks were looking bedraggled. Now I can take a break from lugging around hoses and sprinklers every morning, too. Yay for an extra 15 minutes in my day.

Our original Saturday plan was to focus on yard work, but with a steady, soaking rain falling most of the day, we decided to swing by Goat Fest in Jefferson, a fun event we have enjoyed in the past. But after getting drenched crossing a parking lot, we decided it wasn’t worth the effort, and if we really have our hearts set on seeing goats, we’ll be going to the state fair in a couple of weeks, so we quickly came up with a much drier Plan C: lunch at a new-to-us tavern in the middle of a corn field (naturally). I want to call it a dive bar, but it had wood beams across the ceiling, everything was way too clean and polished, and the food was a notch above your typical pub fare. I got a pot roast sandwich with grilled onions and pepper jack on sourdough, and Tara ordered a crab salad sandwich on a croissant. We were impressed with both.

“This place would make a great Friday night hangout spot!” I said to Tara. “Like Shanahan’s in Vancouver.” Ahh, sweet memories. We were semi-regulars at Shanny’s and so fond of the place, I stopped in again for old time’s sake during my April visit.

As fun as that would be, the truth is, we rarely hang out anywhere other than home on most Friday evenings. Which is pretty nice and a lot cheaper anyway, but I guess if we ever do find ourselves itchin’ to get out of the house and do something fun in a cornfield some Friday night, we’ll know where to go. I mean, they even have fried pickles!

It’s a match made in heaven.

  5. I’m happy for you. You found the breakfast of your dreams. I am not however, happy for your heart. At 1100 mg of sodium per sammie my opinion still holds. Spam is better when left in its can.
Glad you saw some rain. Now please send it this way… we’re parched.

    1. That’s why you don’t read the wrappers! It’ll be an occasional treat at best. You know, despite my reputation, I hardly ever actually eat SPAM. I opened a can last month, and that was the first time I’d had it in about two years. Oh, the shame.

You’re the third person here to ask me to send them some rain. I’m getting stretched pretty thin, but I’ll see what I can do…

  6. Is it any wonder you love Kwik Trip and are completely unfazed by its intentional misspelling? I mean, a SPAMwich? It’s almost like you’re on their board of directors or something.
Wasn’t that day of rain fabulous? It was so fall-like and cozy, I made cookies!
Whenever we are invited anywhere on a Friday (during the school year), we moan and groan. We are so tired after a week of work we don’t want to be anywhere but our own home surrounded by our furry friends.

    1. I like the way they spell it. That’s pretty kreative. Once in awhile, someone accuses me of secretly writing sponsored posts (I know you’re not doing that, but it reminds me of previous conversations with others). Sadly, I’ve never made one red cent from my blog…I just write passionately about the things that I love. Which is why Travel WIsconsin really should hire me!

I loved the rain, and already, my grass is much greener. They say we might have another good soaking midweek. The weather has yo-yo’d so much this year, it’s crazy.

  10. Since I now know you lived in Hawaii for years, I can only assume that you discovered your love of Spam while in the Aloha State. They sure do love their Spam over there! Being vegetarian, I cannot agree with you on the importance of that in the grand scheme of the world, I still think indoor plumbing has it beat. But to each his own, and I’m glad you were able to enjoy it. Just think, if Dunkin Donuts had actually included the…what was it? Turkey sausage? then you would never have known this bliss. Life is a journey, and sometimes god’s greatest gift is unanswered prayers, you can’t always get what you want but if you try sometime you just might find you get what you need, etc.

    1. To be fair, Dunkin’s mistake hastened the process, but that SPAMwich was on my radar the moment it came out. Eventually, I would have indulged in that particular pleasure.

The funny thing is, we didn’t even eat a lot of SPAM when we lived in Hawaii. It wasn’t until I visited the SPAM Museum in Austin, Minnesota, on a road trip in 2011 that I truly developed an appreciation for the canned meat. So much so, I took Tara to the same museum 10 years later.

  13. Oh, I love a good breakfast sandwich! (My predictive text wanted me to say I love a good breakfast Sancerre, but I always wait until at least lunch time for that). I’m afraid I don’t care for either croissants nor Spam on my sandwiches, though, I’m strictly an English muffin kind of gal. I love croissants, but I want them to be good authentic French ones, and I want them with butter and jam. I’m hungry, is what I’m saying.

I’m so glad you got some good rain! It doesn’t rain here in the summer, so I’m used to brown dry grass everywhere. Actually today it’s stupid hot, which is also pretty common for August. It’s either 95, 99, or 101, depending on which app I look at. Regardless, it’s hot! But it’s dry heat here, so it’s bearable, especially as all of the houses have A/C. Spendy but needed.

    1. Having spend the majority of my adult life on the West Coast (California, then Oregon, then Washington), summer rain still feels like a novelty to me…but we actually get the bulk of our precipitation during the summer months. In winter, it just often falls as snow.

I’ve never had a real French croissant. I’m afraid if I did, I’d never appreciate the ones I can get out here, so maybe that’s a good thing!

  16. Can’t share your enthusiasm for SPAM, but I’m happy for you. We need rain so desperately. It’s been so dry, our huge lake is 7.85 below full pool, meaning it would take over 30 inches of steady rain to get it back to normal. Send some of your rain our way!

    1. Holy crap; that’s pretty bad. We have more potentially heavy rain moving in this evening/overnight, so it really seems like feast or famine out there. I’d send you some, but I already fulfilled Rivergirl’s request for the same yesterday. Not sure how much pull I have left with Mother Nature.

  17. I would love that Spam sandwich! Then River ruined it with the sodium mention. 😂 But you won me back by reminding me it’s a once-in-a-while treat. This is what I get for reading the comments!

By the way, a lot of Filipino restaurants have Spam on their regular menus, and it is so good. We had a dish with Spam at the last one we ate at, and it was SO GOOD. We haven’t been there in over a year, so it really is a once-in-a-while treat for us!

    1. Ooh, I love Filipino food. Didn’t realize SPAM was a popular ingredient in their cuisine, but it kind of makes sense.

Have you ever had SPAM musubi? It’s basically a sushi roll with SPAM inside. Popularized in Hawaii, of course…but there’s a restaurant in Wauwatosa that serves it. I highly recommend if you ever get an opportunity to try it!

  18. Guess I need to send you my Mystery Mac recipe. Something I invented (but probably not unique to me), and served to my dive club at a pot luck. It’s basically mac and cheese, with sauteed minced SPAM, garlic, and onion mixed in. I didn’t tell the club what the meat was up front – I made them guess – ergo the mystery. After they all liked it I fessed up. Some were surprised, some shocked.

And we usually buy the reduced salt SPAM variety.

Last post we talked about Interurban on Mississippi closing. Did you ever try Miss Delta on Mississippi? They had a “Trashy Mac” which was a similar idea, only with gumbo or jambalaya mix in options. They just closed too, and I’ll miss them.

    1. Your Mystery Mac sounds like a delicious hit!

Yes, we went to Miss Delta a couple of times. That was the first (and only, so far) place I’ve ever eaten crawfish heads. Not that I’m opposed; you just don’t see crawfish on menus very often.

There used to be a mac-and-cheese-only restaurant on Mississippi, as well, but they closed down around the time we moved.

Sad to hear about Miss Delta closing too!!
