My blog is 15 years old today. As hard as it is to believe I’ve been writing that long, the really astounding part is, before signing up for WorePress, I wrote elsewhere for eight years. Which means I’ve been blogging for 42% of my life.

Holy cow.

I had all kinds of fun ideas to mark this auspicious occasion. Like creating 15 posts leading up to the big day, each celebrating a noteworthy milestone from that year, but this task seemed too daunting. Would you want to wade through all this?!

Yeah, me neither.

I will share the opening words from my very first post, published on this date in 2009, because they set the stage for what was to come:

I have one goal in life: to publish a book before I die.

I doubled down on my promise when I wrapped up that virgin post, and in the process, found my future blog title:

I will be a published author someday. Mark my words.

It’s been a fun ride, and I’m forever grateful to have been able to chart the many changes my life has gone through in real time. It’s been a rollercoaster ride full of both good and bad. Unemployment, a new romance, road trips, hospital stays, seven new jobs, two big cross-country moves. It’s all here.

Oh, and like I promised, I published that book – less than two years after starting the blog. Guess I was practicing the fine art of manifestation right from the start.

Hands down, the best part about blogging is the friendships I have acquired through this amazing community of like-minded people. Some virtual, others in person, but all real. Whether you’re reading me from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, or Bangladesh, thank you for humoring me and following along! Your comments, likes, and shares mean the world to me.

(Seriously, I apparently have a lot of fans in Bangladesh. More people have visited my blog from that country than Mexico, Russia, Italy, Spain, and 131 other countries. Go figure!)

I have always tried to write openly and honestly, focusing on the little things that make life so absurd. The conversations with Tara are mostly word-for-word, though I might take a little artistic license to exaggerate a point. I consider humor my forte, and I am never afraid to poke fun at myself, even if it means sharing stories about being caught dancing naked on camera or barking like a dog in public.

My favorite blog moment? Probably the time the belly dancer I publicly lusted over found my blog and gave me a bit of good-natured ribbing about it. She was such a good sport, too!

(Thankfully, so was Tara.)

In truth, very few topics are off-limits, though I sometimes have to write in code, Mad Libs-style, because family members read the blog. One lesson I did learn the hard way: don’t let your boss know you have a blog. There is nothing more disheartening than having him recount passages during the Monday morning all-team huddle.

Makes it really hard to badmouth him, too.

I have been rereading my blog from the start, but with so many posts and so little time, it’ll probably be 2027 before I catch up to the present. Looking back over the comments, a lot of bloggers I used to interact with have dropped off the face of the earth. I can promise you this: that will never be me. If I suddenly disappear, alert the authorities, because something bad has happened to me.

Seriously. I’m fully committed to this endeavor and can’t imagine not blogging about my life. It simply means too much to me.

Thank you again for your continued support over the years. To celebrate 15 years of stick-to-itiveness, I’m playing DJ and taking requests. Do you have any burning questions you want answered? Particular topics you’d like me to write about? Photos you’re interested in seeing? Loose ends that need tying up? Now’s your golden opportunity, so fire away!

And if you’re reading me from Bangladesh, how’s the weather in Dhaka today?

  1. happy 15 and here’s to another 150 years ahead! (that’s in blog years, kind of like dog years). I always enjoy your posts and often laugh right along with you, okay, and sometimes at you, and I like how you try lots of new things and embrace life fully

    1. Go ahead and laugh at me all you want! Tara says I take self-deprecation to a new level. I’m okay with that. 🙂

  4. Oh, this is awesome Mark. Congratulations. Love it. So happy for you. Such an amazing feat. And yes, I get many of the fun moments and even the challenges that you mentioned. I’ve had to write in code occasionally in case a family member or coworker reads my blog. It really is a rewarding experience. Okay Mr. DJ, what’s your favorite blog topic. I know picking out one favorite in 9 years is impossible, I can’t imagine 15. But what topics get you the most passionate? Here’s to 15 more years!!!

    1. Thank you, Brian! And that’s a great question. I intend to answer this (and any others I get) in a future post. I appreciate you following along!

Having friends and family read the blog is both a blessing and a curse, depending on what’s going on in my life!

      1. Oh, so true. I do get offended though when family members don’t read my blog. They’ll ask me some question on how things are going or what not, and I’ll like: “Um, I wrote about that last week. Don’t you read my blog?” Yea, I admit that it’s got to be annoying. Ha, ha.

  5. I discovered, a bit too late, that I didn’t want any family members or local friends to read. (especially from work) I’ve been at it for a little over 20 years and still enjoy it and being able to write about my life, feelings, sorrows and joys. Blogging is cheap therapy!

    1. Thank you, Margaret. I didn’t realize you were still actively blogging, but I’m happy to be able to click on your name and land there! “Cheap therapy” is a great way to sum it up.

  9. You raised your blog well. *sniffles* I have the same issue with some family members and friends finding my blog–I can’t mention certain family secrets that some family members know about and others don’t. It can be limiting, for sure.

    1. I love the occasional comments here from my mom, but back in the early days, when I was unemployed for nearly two years, she was always warning me that my posts might scare off potential employers. Which, who knows, she could’ve been onto something. I still get the occasional “are you sure you want to mention that in public?” but those are few and far between nowadays.

  11. Congrats on your 15 years! It’s fun to have these big milestones. It sometimes makes me sad that some of my early commenters aren’t around anymore, but the community is so vibrant now that it makes my early days seem sort of ridiculous. Oh, well. I’ll blog until death, I suspect.

  13. My blog is 16 years old. I’m already thinking about what I should do to celebrate Year 20! I think our Taurus Tenacity (can I trademark that??) is the reason we’ve stuck it out for so long, while so many other bloggers have fallen by the wayside. I get sad just looking back at all the folks I used to talk with on a weekly basis and now it’s like they’re dead . . . well, at least one that I know of did pass away. Makes you wonder, doesn’t it? Like, why not just say goodbye??

    Liked by 3 people

    1. I think it’s definitely a Taurus thing. 😊

    2. Hilariously, I just responded to another comment blaming that Taurus tenacity…before even seeing what you wrote. It’s true!

That’s what bothers me the most: the lack of a proper goodbye. There are people from my past who I interacted with for years…to have them just suddenly disappear WITHOUT being dead feels like a slap in the face!

  14. Happy 15-year blog-a-versary! I’m so glad you’re still blogging and have no plans of stopping. My 15th is in June! I don’t have anything planned yet, but I’m just happy to still be writing and have no intentions of stopping either. Blogging is so much fun.

I really think you should do fun giveaways and such. (You get a car! You get a car! You get a car!) Maybe stretch out your 15-year celebration all the way until next December. 😊

Off to read about the belly dancer…

    1. I actually thought of doing a giveaway. I was going to ask all the lurkers to leave a comment just once, saying hi, and draw one random name for a signed copy of my novel. But that seemed overwhelming. I suspect there are a LOT of them out there.

We Tauruses have to stick together! Bloggers for life!

  15. How about advice for new bloggers? I’m at that choosing my niche stage which stumped you for a while. What were your keys to finding your supportive tribe? Was it your SEO experience or just hours in the seat and great posts?

  16. Happy 15th! That’s quite a writing milestone – on top of a book (and a regular writing job.)

To a degree, a blog can be a sort of autobiography. Based on your stats table, it looks like you’ve written enough to fill an autobiography the size of War and Peace.

    Twice over.

And maybe War and Peace would be a good name for your bio, factoring in pre and post Tara.

    1. Thank you, Dave! i appreciate that you’ve followed along for so long. I haven’t written much about my ex on this blog (though my first venture covered every nitty gritty detail of the divorce), but you are absolutely right: Tolstoy’s title would be a very apt description for mine!
