A few months ago, I had what might be described (well, okay, I did use these words) as a spiritual encounter with a white deer. That post was particularly earnest and heartfelt as I displayed a vulnerability rare to the blog…

…so, imagine my surprise when a couple of readers suggested the white deer might be an “AI-assisted prank.”

Quelle horreur!

I suppose that’s the price I pay for being a practical joker. It didn’t help that I shared my white deer post on April 2, though I must point out, there is no such thing as April Fools Day Plus One! The pranks don’t carry over, people. If I haven’t dished up the BS by 11:59 p.m. on April 1, rest assured every word on my blog is the truth!*

*Disclaimer: the truth might be slightly exaggerated for dramatic or comedic effect at times.

Would it help if I told you I crossed paths with the white deer again, and provided visual evidence of said encounter?

Ain’t she gorgeous?

I had just set out on my Wednesday morning walk when I stumbled upon the white deer (there were two, actually) in the neighborhood next to mine. I grabbed my phone and snapped a pic, but it was still dark out, and the deer were too far away. Here’s my pathetic first attempt.

Twenty minutes later, I’d made a circuit through the woods and returned to the neighborhood, and now there was enough dawn’s early light to capture the elusive white deer. I had my phone in hand, camera at the ready, hoping they were still around.

Luck was on my side.

The only edit I made was boosting the contrast to blur the background, so the deer would stand out more sharply. Ironically, I used my phone’s “AI Enhance” editing tool on one of the photos, just to see what would happen…and it adjusted the deer’s color to brown. Apparently, even AI doesn’t believe white deer exist.

But hopefully, the naysayers are convinced now.

I invented the chili dog!

I recently ran into a lunchtime dilemma.

When noon rolled around, I couldn’t decide what to have. I’d narrowed it down to two choices: the jalapeno chicken hot dogs I’d bought on a whim, and the leftover chili from the previous evening. But I could not decide between the two to save my life.

And then, I had an epiphany: why not have both? I could spoon some chili on top of the hot dog, and voila! Best of both worlds. So, I did exactly that, and it was really good.

“Hey, guess what?” I told Tara when she got home that evening, practically bursting with excitement. “I invented the chili dog!”

“I’m pretty sure that’s already been done,” she replied.

“That may be technically true,” I countered. “But if nobody had done it before, I would have been the first!”

I never claimed my logic was sound, guys.

My wife’s dismissal notwithstanding, I was impressed by my culinary wizardry. This made me wonder what other food combinations I might have invented if I were quicker on my feet. Cheese and crackers for sure. Chips and salsa? Duh. Chocolate and peanut butter? Suck it, Reese’s. I’ve never been to England, but if I’d spent so much as a single day in the UK, I just know I’d have paired bangers with mash.

I’m pretty sure Hawaiian pizza would be my crowning legacy, though.

On the other hand, if given a choice, I’d like to un-invent watermelon. Blech.

Is there a disclaimer you’d add to your blog? Which food combination would you have invented? Anything you’d like to un-invent?

  1. Okay. First…I LOVE the white deer encounter. Truly humbling to see, I’m sure! 💝
Second? A ‘blech’ for watermelon? I have a doozy…a heavyweight melon waiting to be carved up because it’s taking up too much room in the fridge. What’s to dislike about innocent ol’ watermelon??? 😜

    1. You mean, besides the taste and texture? Not a thing!

      1. I get it — it can’t be room temp or mushy! But cold and crisp? Yum! ❤️

      2. Sorry, but cold and crisp don’t improve it either!

  2. I can’t claim it because my parents did it, and I’ve carried on the tradition with my kids, but mixing ketchup with mayonnaise for a fish stick dipping sauce is a winner.

The white deer moment is spectacular. Quite funny that AI wanted to turn it brown. Pish.

    1. Oh, and props on the title. You are a master of the clever title.

      1. Thank you! I had to double-check to make sure I hadn’t used this title previously, maybe during a snowstorm in South Dakota. Nope!

      2. Oh yeah. I see how it can be multi-purpose.

    2. My mom likes to mix ketchup and mayo and use that as a dipping sauce for shrimp, in lieu of actual cocktail sauce. She doesn’t like the horseradish bite. It’s good, but I prefer my sauce a little zippier!

  3. The deer looks like a cross between a deer and a Llama. 😂And Heinz makes Mayochup so I don’t have to do the mixing.

    1. I liked the Mayomust, but I think they stopped making that one. Can’t find it anywhere, at least not locally. I even checked Freddy’s when I was visiting in April, and they only had Mayochup.

  4. That deer looks strange and not just because of the color. Mutant? I would also uninvent ALL melons. I love chili/cheese/onion/sour cream dogs; do they have a name?

    1. I think it was just the angle of her face, the way her ears appeared to be flattened.

I don’t know if those hot dogs have a name, but they sound pretty stinkin’ tasty!

  5. If you’re uninventing watermelon? I’m banning SPAM. It’s only fair.
Can’t believe you saw an albino deer twice! I’ve never, ever seen one and we have literal herds in our back yard.
    You’re one lucky duck.

    1. Not albino: leucistic! But every bit as impressive.

I admit I had to look that up..

  6. The white deer gives me a real Twin Peaks vibe. I can see FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper with his coffee out in the woods finding himself face to face with that white deer. On the show itself, there was a white horse. Here’s hoping you don’t come across one of those as they were considered a harbinger of death. I have never tried to create a food mash-up, but I will say my wife always calls me out for having ketchup with everything at breakfast. She would like to un-invent that behavior.😁

    1. I hate to admit this, but I have never seen “Twin Peaks.” All I know is, some lady liked to talk to a log? Am I on track?

FWIW, I’m Team Ketchup with Breakfast. Especially on scrambled eggs and hash browns!

  7. I did LOL at your first attempt at the photo! But I did know that white deer exist because there’s a dedicated white deer park near the Finger Lakes in NY. And off topic, but AI sucks!

Well, I believe I invented a new food idea this summer, so hear me out. Microwave 1/2 C of berries (any kind) in the microwave for about 20 seconds and top with plain greek yogurt. That’s it! It tastes like a delicious warm pie; I kid you not. But yeah, my husband just looks at me every time I mention it.

    1. I was so bummed out when I looked at the first photo. I tried a bunch of times, but the darkness and distance were preventing me from getting even a half-decent shot. Second time’s a charm in this case!

I think your yogurt and berry treat sounds amazing. I’ll have to try it.

  8. The white deer in neat! I’ve never heard of such a thing.

When I was a kid, I put melted chocolate and marshmallows on the stovetop and then froze in these candy mold. I don’t trust my kid-self, but I recall it to be the “chewy-choc” to be quite tasty LOL.
