When we bought our house, we inherited a pretty basic refrigerator. White, no frills, smallish. It’s fairly new (manufactured in 2020), which surprised me. When we were fridge shopping in Rapid City around that time, we pretty much had to buy stainless steel because that’s all we could find.

(Side note: we splurged on a set of really nice, brand-new stainless steel kitchen appliances for that house – stove, dishwasher, microwave – but only got to enjoy them for a few months ’cause, you know, we decided we just had to live in Wisconsin. Damn you, America’s Dairyland, for seducing us with your cheese. All that gouda cost us a lot of cheddar.)

Anyway, our fridge. One thing it lacks that I really miss is a water and ice dispenser. I’m a fella who loves things cold, and dealing with ice cube trays sucks. But I told myself I could make the sacrifice for a while because we’re planning on buying a new refrigerator in a few years and moving the old one to the garage, where it’ll get a second lease on life as a beer fridge – the fate of all Midwest refrigerators. The new one would, of course, have a water and ice dispenser. But then Tara had to go and harsh my mellow by informing me that hard water, which we have, contains high levels of calcium and magnesium. Over time, these minerals will clog the water supply lines, restricting flow and reducing performance. It’s likely your fridge will crap out a lot sooner.

“Oh, no!” I wailed. “What will I do?!”
“Get used to warm water?” Tara replied.

Nope. That simply won’t do. I was on the verge of despair, resigned to a future in which I’d be stuck extracting ice cubes from plastic trays until my wrinkly, arthritic hands could no longer perform the feat, which is complicated enough when you’re young(er) and dexterous. But then I remembered that portable ice makers are a thing. Days later, a shiny new FRIGIDAIRE EFIC189-Silver Compact Ice Maker showed up on my front door, which was super creepy and bizarre because I hadn’t ordered one.

J/K. Of course I ordered one.

Guys, this thing is a game-changer! In less than ten minutes, I’ve got enough fresh ice to enjoy a cold beverage. All I have to do is fill the reservoir with water and push a button; the machine does the rest. I spent an embarrassing amount of time staring at it the first time I made ice; the whole process is mesmerizing and high-tech, with levers opening and closing, platforms rising and tilting, bullet cubes dropping into the bucket. I was so damn excited, I ran upstairs to fetch Tara, but she said she had “better things to do with her time” than wander into the basement and stare at a machine.

OK, fine. Maybe I’m just easily amused. But it is pretty slick! Granted, it’s not nearly as efficient as a built-in refrigerator dispenser, but at $84 it’s a hell of a lot more economical…and much easier than trying to dislodge ice cubes from a flimsy tray. This is a compromise I can live with.

Putting the “ope” in Pope

I’m not Catholic so I rarely pay attention to pope culture, but can I just say how thrilled I am that the newly elected pontiff, Pope Leo XIV, is a Midwesterner? Think about it: he’s the first pope to have saved big money at Menard’s!

Naturally, the jokes have been flying fast and furiously. Like, holy water now comes from Lake Michigan. Bread and wine is now cheese and beer. Malort is now part of the communion. Vatican City is getting a Kwik Trip and a Culver’s. Putting ketchup on a brat is now a mortal sin. Charlie Berens and Myles Montplaisir have a whole shtick going.

I’m sure he’ll be busy with official pope business, but I just want to know if he dips his cheese curds in ranch.

  1. I’ve been tempted to buy an ice maker like that for the man cave as the beer fridge doesn’t have one and its small freezer is filled with chilled mugs and glasses. How big is yours… and is it a noisy beast?

    1. It’s 15″D x 11″W x 14.5″H and can make up to 26 lbs. of ice. Very quiet except when the ice drops into the bucket, but even that isn’t too bad.

  2. My daughter-in-law loves the “good ice” from places like Sonic and QT. (I’m not sure if those translate into Midwestern.) I’ve thought about gifting her a small ice maker, but don’t want to take up her limited counter space.

    1. Sonic yes, QT no. It’s fairly compact, but we keep ours in the utility room downstairs to preserve kitchen counter space.

  3. I’m delighted by your happiness over the ice maker. It sounds cool to watch, indeed. Maybe Tara will find some time to enjoy it too. Who needs TV when you have an ice maker, right?

“beer fridge – the fate of all Midwest refrigerators.” That made me LOL.

I saw the pope thing yesterday and immediately thought of you. I considered sharing it but wasn’t fully sure it would interest you. Now I see you’ve got it covered! 🙂

    1. She said she’d watch it “next time.” I’ll be holding her to that!

For future reference, anything that is humorous and Midwest-related will appeal to me. Especially if said clip features Charlie Berens.

    1. I had no idea they were so popular. Honestly, I wish I’d bought mine as soon as we moved in! My parents were drinking ice water every night of their visit and getting the cubes out of the tray was a struggle. Sorry, folks – next time will be easier!

  5. I absolutely love my ice maker and will never have a fridge without one–or will buy a separate ice maker. Expensive? When dealing with ice cube trays, about half the cubes end up on the floor somehow!

    1. Haha, you’re right about the ice cubes on the floor! And every time that happens, the cats freak out.

  6. I am thrilled that you’ve found joy in your new appliance. I had no idea that counter top ice makers even exist. I have a negative opinion of both fridge water and fridge ice. There is a definitive taste that bothers me. Ice really isn’t my thing anyway except for iced tea so I don’t mind making my own in the summer (yes in trays) and a few cubes are easilys stored in my silicone bags.

    1. It’d be a lot less expensive than a freezer repair and a LOT LESS EXPENSIVE than a new fridge or freezer!

  8. A countertop ice maker would definitely be nice to have. I wonder if they make ones that do crushed ice.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. They have some top-of-the-line models that do crushed ice, but the fancier ones can get really expensive. I’d just invest in a good hammer.

  10. Congrats on your latest appliance. I din’t know that such things existed. And now I do!

Our current fridge doesn’t have water and ice dispensers in the door . . . and I don’t miss them . . . but a corner of the freezer is dedicated to a built in ice-maker which I would miss dearly.

    1. I didn’t know they existed until I worked at TobacCo. They had a countertop ice maker in the kitchen…but oddly, it was unplugged and unused.

  11. I can’t believe you don’t already have the garage fridge! How is this possible?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I know. We sacrificed a lot when we left Rapid City. I suppose we could have brought it with us, but we already had a freezer to transport and limited storage space. Right now it’s just not feasible to buy a new refrigerator, but I don’t know how long we’ll be able to hold out!

      1. The weirdest thing about SoCal is that your fridge moves with you. When you rent and then when you own. So when we moved to our current house, we brought our old fridge and it became the garage fridge because it was too big for our smaller, older house.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. That is odd! Once in awhile a seller will take their appliances, but that’s pretty rare. Pretty sure every house we ever looked at anywhere came with, at the very least, a refrigerator.

    1. It’s one of those things that seems so obvious in retrospect. I’m kicking myself for waiting this long to buy it! I did a lot of research and in this price range, the Frigidaire came out on top, but there are some other decent ones that cost about the same.

  15. We have an ice maker in our fridge, and yet… I still want a separate ice maker. Does yours make the “good” ice? My friend has one on her counter—in addition to her fridge ice maker—because she loves the “good” ice. She bought it as a gift to herself, and honestly, I kind of get it.

Chicagoland is going wild over the pope stuff. It’s actually pretty funny.

      5. We got it off Amazon. Shakes fist at Bezos. It’s the EUHOMY Countertop Ice Maker Machine. Homey… hee hee. I like it, but I’m not completely sold. I think my friend got a top-of-the-line ice maker—this one was on sale. But it had really good reviews. I will say: the ice gets very crunchy once it’s been sitting in water for a bit.

Oh—and we started The Office last night! We’re already on episode five of season one. You are officially an influencer.

  16. When I first moved to the UK, I was horrified by the lack of ice. We always have ice trays filled up, but the fridges rarely have ice makers (indeed our new one doesn’t, but then we have a very small kitchen). I’d be tempted by that ice maker, except for the small kitchen bit, but it is good to know about them for when we make our final move and will have a (even if only slightly) bigger kitchen.

I am liking the sound of the new Pope a lot. And that was before I knew of his origins.

We have very hard water here, but have a fridge water filter that has a light that turns red when it needs replaced. It’s been good to go for 11 years now.

    1. When Tara’s sister and BIL came out to visit in Rapid City, they thought Menard’s was the funniest thing ever. They kept walking around saying the name out loud and chuckling. Clearly non-Midwesterners, those two.

Do you have a water line going through the water softener, or is it straight up hard water to the fridge?

      Like

      1. Nobody has water softeners here unless they have well water. Most suburbs here have city water. The line goes straight to the fridge. Our water is a 7 on the scale.

I have two lousy ice cube trays. I’ll stick with them. I actually drink most everything at room temperature because icy cold drinks can trigger my afib! Argh!

Good stuff on the Pope! 🙂

      1. LOL! I will enjoy the joys of an ice machine through you as you have embraced it mightily! And by the way, did you know that people in other countries don’t understand the American infatuation with ice? I watch some of those foreign YouTubers who react to things in America vs say … the UK. They simply don’t use much ice in Europe. And people in Asia generally feel that liquids should be taken warm or at room temperature.

Chinese medicine: …balance and harmony within the body. Cold water is believed to disrupt this balance, especially by affecting the Spleen, which is considered crucial for digestion and Qi circulation.
