I’ve mentioned my fondness for Spindrift sparkling water in passing, but haven’t given it the blog real estate it deserves. Because when a shelf in the basement looks like this, you have to admit to yourself you have a full-blown addiction.

Eight rows, six deep, some of them double-stacked: there are 83 cans on this shelf. Plus two unopened eight-packs on the shelf above and several cans in the fridge. If this stuff had alcohol in it, you’d be staging an intervention.

(They do make Spindrift Spiked, actually.)

As far as obsessions go, Spindrift is a pretty healthy one. Fresh-squeezed fruit. No added sugar. Lightly carbonated. Most cans average 3-7 calories. There’s a wide range of flavors for endless variety. And best of all, Spindrift is delicious with only a few rare exceptions (cucumber, I’m lookin’ at you). My current faves are peach strawberry, Nojito, spiced apple cider, and strawberry lemonade.

I’ll never forget the first time I tried Spindrift. Tara and I were exploring White River Falls State Park in central Oregon one cool summer afternoon in June, 2017. It’s a part of the state we rarely visited; I’m surprised I didn’t blog about our day or share this awesome photo.

Maybe there’s just so many beautiful waterfalls in the Pacific Northwest I became desensitized to ’em.

Actually, I’m going to do something out of character and share a bunch of photos from that day. Better seven years later than never, amirite?!

While the namesake waterfall is pretty spectacular, the big draw for us was an abandoned power station. We probably spent an hour just exploring the place, which had lots of rusting equipment, not to mention some colorful graffiti.

(Don’t ask me about Cumlux. I don’t know, and quite frankly, probably don’t want to know.)

After hiking to the waterfall and back, we began the long drive home. Our timing was perfect, as storm clouds started to gather. On the dry side of the state east of the Cascades, rain doesn’t always reach the ground.

At one point, we stopped into a convenience store to grab a snack and something to drink. This was years after I’d given up soda, so I was in the mood for something light and refreshing. This little hole-in-the-wall gas station in the middle of nowhere was selling a sparkling water I’d never heard of before, so I decided to give it a try. I walked out of there with not one, but two, cans of Spindrift. Blackberry and lemon, I believe.

“You don’t even like sparkling water,” Tara said, eyeing me dubiously as I cracked open the blackberry. “Why did you buy two?”

“In case this turns out to be the best sparkling water I’ve ever had, and I can never find it again,” I replied. “At least then I can look forward to having another.”

Thankfully, I was only half right. My love affair with Spindrift began with that first sip and continues unabated to this day. I drink one can pretty much every single day. I’ve tried other brands over the years – La Croix, Polar, etc. – and none of them come close. The fresh fruit really does add great flavor. Spindrift is hands down the best. This is not a paid product endorsement, I swear!

(The S. Pellegrino I like is unflavored mineral water, which I consider a different category.)

Welp, after barely a drop of rain all month, the first day of autumn erased our precipitation deficit in one fell swoop.

We ended up with over 3″ of rain since midnight, starting out with some early morning thunderstorms and gradually transitioning to a gentle, steady rainfall that lasted until mid-afternoon.

What a welcome and unexpected gift! Our yard was turning brown and crisp, and in fact, I haven’t busted out the John Deere all month. I’m guessing that’ll change next weekend.

Thankfully, this put an end to our hot spell, too. It was 91° yesterday, guys. All last week was in the upper 80s, too. That’s brutal for late September. But check out our current temperature:

Almost 28° colder than it was 24 hours ago. Nice to give our A/C a break. It actually feels like fall for a change. Perfect timing, Mama Nature!

All that plus we’re grilling ribeye steaks for dinner (don’t worry, it finally stopped raining) AND the previously 0-2 Broncos beat the previously 2-0 Buccaneers today. On the road in Tampa Bay.

Could this day be any better?!

  1. We get near 80F for the next few days. Someone forgot to explain to nature that fall means crisp and cool in the PNW. Thanks for the info about Spindrift. My summer was full of La Croix & Waterloo in various varieties but now I have to see if your choice really is better 🙂

    1. And I’m curious about Waterloo; I may have to give that one a try (but I’m confident it won’t surpass Spindrift as my favorite).

      1. I enjoyed the Waterloo Blueberry Lemonade this summer and while googling the Spindrift spiced apple cider yesterday I noticed that Waterloo has one out as well…

    1. Nah, that’s what the liquor cabinet is for! I go through nearly a case a week. It doesn’t last as long as you might think.

  4. cool, i can get spindrift at target, trader joes, krogers, and giant eagle here in columbus– i’m on it! my go to for sparkling water is Sanpellegrino Limonata. i will report back after trying the spindrift.

    1. Target was always my go-to, but I’ve found it even cheaper at our local super-sized grocery store chain. I bet the Limonata is pretty good too!

    1. It’s been pretty popular for years now. They actually started out as a regional soda maker in the Northeast until ditching the sugary stuff and going nationwide.

  7. Love the Spindrift story. Those waterfalls are gorgeous! You did a beautiful job of weaving water all the way through this post. Kinda like a waterfall running from one pool to the next. Nice!

    1. It was a fun way to segue and totally unplanned. I’d assumed all along I’d written about that day and was just going to link to the old post. Gave me a great excuse to revisit the past while tying things together with the present.

  8. That does sound like an attractive cold drink option, so I checked out Spindrift UK. Turns out that an inflatable kayak supplier… so, a no go. Probably best I avoid seeking it out or it could turn into a silly expensive indulgence for me. But I laughed at what you said to Tara when you first found it!

Love your photos of that abandoned power plant – I have a thing for rusting industrial equipment too.

    1. I don’t “get” inflatable kayaks. Sure, they’re a bit cheaper and take up less space, but I’d be way too nervous about rupturing the thing and sinking – especially after maneuvering over several downed logs on last weekend’s river paddle.

  9. I’m not a fan of sparkling water in general but you’ve convinced me to try Spindrift. If it tastes leak Spam? You’ll feel my wrath.
I’m wondering how many waterfalls you have to see to become bored with them. That one seems pretty great to me.
I don’t think we’ve had any good rain for a month yet we’re still pretty green. Glad you brought your heat wave, we’ve been in the 60’s for weeks, it’s perfect.

    1. Even I draw the line at SPAM-flavored sparkling water. I do have some principles, you know!

That is a very cool waterfall, but apparently, it slows to a trickle by late summer/early fall. I guess we timed that expedition well.

      60s are perfect. Enjoy!

  10. You know it’s either fabulous or horrible if you remember your first time 🤣 I’m not a fan of anything in cans, but I’ll drink a White Claw at a concert, where wine choices are always bad.

    Gorgeous waterfall!

    1. Haha! Glad my first time was so amazingly memorable. I’ll break down and buy a White Claw if I’m desperate enough.

  11. I have never heard of spindrift and now, of course, I have to try and find it. Even though I have a soda stream machine and could make my own! It’s been unseasonably fall-like here in SoCal. I busted out my fleece pants last night!

  12. I honestly don’t know how La Croix stays in business. There are a few good flavors, but most of it tastes like someone else’s spit. I vaguely feel that way about Polar, too. I’ve been pretty split on Spindrift and refuse to buy an entire 8-pack to try something I might not like. I feel like they should have more variety packs of fizzy waters.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. I would totally be on board with a Spindrift variety pack, especially when they release new flavors. Weird that they don’t take advantage of attracting more customers that way. As for La Croix, the only flavor I like is their coconut – and I know opinions are very divided on that, with some people claiming it tastes like suntan lotion.

      Like

      1. The coconut does taste like sunscreen. It is SO GROSS. I like their Key Lime and Limoncello and basically all their citrus flavors.

      2. It’s definitely a love/hate flavor. There is no in-between!

  13. I wish I liked sparkling water but I’ve tried so many brands and flavors and still don’t care for it. My body doesn’t do well with carbonation these days either–TMI? Old age is so much fun. (not) Both my daughters love Spindrift though; it’s apparently a step up from La Crap.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Huge step up! And it’s less carbonated than La Crap (great name), so maybe you might like it a little more.

  14. I feel so…hydrated…in every way! Thanks, Mark! We got a little rain ‘down here’ yesterday but not as much as you and Tara and fellow Ft. Atkinson-ians(?)
And after reading your ode to Spindrift, I clearly need to try me some. I’ve been loving “Poppi” that’s supposedly a pre-biotic sparkling water. Tasty…but I don’t know that it’s actually doing any of that ‘biotic’ work. And…geez Louise…thanks for the waterfall pic. Too good to keep to yourselves, buddy! 🥰🥰🥰

    1. I’ve seen the Poppi stuff and have been tempted to try it; I’m all about the probiotics (says the guy who used to drink pickle juice every time he visited Pike Place Market).

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Gag! About the pickle juice! I can’t speak to the Spindrift comparison, but the Poppi is pretty tasty! You’ll need to let me know how it compares to your beloved…beverage, that is. Not Tara.

  15. If I remember right, you introduced me to S. Pellegrino because you said it was ‘crunchy,’ right?

Now I’m definitely going to have to try Spindrift.

  16. That is some seriously good luck (or knowing thyself) that you bought two of something you don’t even like and ended up loving them. That’s so you.

    1. Honestly, it was probably because I have severe FOMO. Better safe than sorry…just in case!

  17. Quite the memory! Even down to the flavors. That was a leap of faith buying two. There’s some canned water that Instructor gave a shout-out to one night, and it may very well have been that one. I guess I’ll need to give it a try sometime.

Gorgeous waterfalls. Funny that that led to the delicious water. And then rain! I’m sensing a theme here. Congrats on the rain. As a southern Californian, I’m jealous of your rain!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. The water theme was unintentional, but you’re the second person to mention it. Maybe it was subliminal.

I know for a fact blackberry was the one I tried first, because it became my favorite for a while. Sadly, it’s since been discontinued. I’m 90% sure the other one was lemon, because I know that’s something I would have gone for (and I still buy that one today).

  18. I’ve not had Spindrift, thought it all had alcohol in it like White Claw. I used to drink S. Pellegrino flavored waters but they gave me heartburn so I’m a plain Perrier all the way girl now. Of course a shot of vodka with my Perrier is always an option.

  19. I bought a 12 pack of spindrift several years ago and I wasn’t impressed with it. Maybe I should try again? I mean, I do enjoy LaCroix, so maybe I just have different expectations. Honestly, it doesn’t matter what brand or flavor, they all make me belch like a drunkard.

    I love all waterfalls!

    1. That sounds like some serious belching, alright! If you try Spindrift again, go for the Peach Strawberry or the Nojito. I think those are their two best current flavors and pretty unique.
