We have done the unthinkable and hired a lawn service.

I should clarify: this wasn’t unthinkable to me. It was quite thinkable actually; I’ve pushed for this since we bought the house. But Tara has been against the idea, mostly because she doesn’t want a lot of chemicals in the yard—especially near the garden.

Totally understandable. Neither do I! The company we chose uses high-quality, granular fertilizer that is formulated to be eco-friendly, which I consider a compromise.

(If anyone stumbles upon a receipt for Weed Man, it’s not what you think.)

Regardless, something needed to be done. Creeping Charlie*, crabgrass, and other weeds have been taking over large sections of grass, and there are unsightly bare patches that didn’t exist when we moved in. I don’t know if Dick had a lawn service, but Neighbor Brian does, and our grass looks like shit next to his. It’s not even about keeping up with the Joneses—I just want a healthy lawn.

This is not that:

Besides, maintaining the garden beds and ponds is work enough. The only thing I want to do to the grass is lie on it and watch puffy clouds drift by. After dousing myself in extra-strength DEET, of course.

(Yes, the bloodsucking bastards are back in full force.)

* By the way, I hate things that creep. Heavy traffic, poison ivy, the hour hand on a clock, bureaucratic red tape, molasses (hurry the hell up already; syrup has its act together!), people sneaking up behind you with ill intent. No good comes from creepers, just sayin’.

Make it Quik, please

After reading my last post, Matt asked whether I was a big chocolate milk drinker as a kid. Fair question, given my birthday tradition.

Oddly enough, I was not.

Don’t get me wrong: I loved chocolate milk—I just didn’t drink it all that often. My mom would occasionally buy the Nestlé Quik powdered cocoa mix, but those cans would last forever. If anything, I preferred Strawberry Quik. Maybe it was just the novelty of pink milk.

So, why go out of my way to drink chocolate milk on my birthday? It all started during a birthday trip to Sheboygan in 2024. We had stopped at a Kwik Trip to gas up and grab something to drink. I spotted a bottle of chocolate milk and thought, wow, it’s been years since I’ve had this. Instead of my usual Bai or Gatorade Zero, I splurged on the chocolate milk, reasoning that it was my birthday and I deserved this one small indulgence. It was so good, immediately after that first sip, I told Tara, “I should make this an annual birthday tradition!”

And so I did. #ManOfMyWord

Incidentally, Sheboygan almost became a birthday tradition too. We went again last year, this time for an overnighter, and had an absolute blast. If not for my recent trip to the Pacific Northwest, we might’ve planned another getaway to the Malibu of the Midwest during my birthday weekend this year, but I was all traveled out.

Clearly, I was not all chocolate milk’d out.

My town is underwater

A few days ago, my friend Ashley remarked, “I didn’t know your town was underwater!” after spotting my latest Instagram post.

That may be an overexaggeration, but only a slight one.

That’s what happens when 5″ of rain falls in a single week.

The Rock River crested a week ago, but it’s not like a bathtub, where you can just unplug a stopper and let all the water drain away. It’ll be weeks before the River Walk lives up to its name again.

Craziest thing of all is, our “storm season” hasn’t even ramped up yet. We got an early start this year, which is par for the climate change course.

And now it’s turned cold again, with frost and freeze warnings. This is why you never plant a garden in Wisconsin until at least Mother’s Day.

A few more odds and ends before I forget:

  • Adios, Jamie Ding! One of the most successful Jeopardy contestants of all time was finally defeated, and I am glad. No shade against the guy–he’s a freakin’ genius—but watching one player dominate so thoroughly grows old after awhile.
  • I read an interview with Dave Grohl yesterday in which he states his “new favorite band” is fellow grunge icons Alice In Chains. Dave said he never appreciated them in their heyday but has come around. As a huge AIC fan myself, this makes me happy.
  • Scrubs is one of my all-time favorite sitcoms, and I thoroughly enjoyed the nine-episode revival. It perfectly captured the spirit of the original, and almost every character who’s still alive made at least a cameo (even Neil Flynn’s Janitor, but not Dick Van Dyke…he gets a pass, being 100 and all). I hope like crazy they bring it back again for an 11th season.

Anything “creeping” you out? Are/were you a Nestlé Quik fan? Got a new favorite band? Were you on board for the Scrubs reboot?

  1. I always thought strawberry Quik sounded disgusting until one day at lunchtime in high school. Lunch meant walking to the supermarket next door and wandering the aisles to find something to eat. I wasn’t eating that day to make weight for wrestling but walked through the store with my friends. I came upon the strawberry Quik and it called out to me like a Siren. I resisted (and they didn’t even have to lash me to the mast). I’ll admit it never looked good to me again and I’ve never tried it.

Creeping Charlie has pretty flowers, but they are not enough to make up for its creepiness. Not much else grows in the shady part of our back yard, so I think of it as a ground cover and pretend I want it there…until I have to rip it out of some other area.

    1. Have you ever tried any of the flavored milks at the Wisconsin State Fair? Gotta admit, they have some pretty interesting flavors! Apple pie, anyone? Root beer?

      1. Nope. Haven’t been to the State Fair since childhood. Unless there’s a horse-pulling contest, the fair’s not for me. No tractor pulls with souped up monster tractors. (I’m lying. I’ve been to county fairs when my daughter was competing and there were no pulling contests.) Root beer milk sounds like a root beer float after the ice cream has melted. And apple pie milk would be pie a la mode after melting. I can imagine both of those.

  2. I despise creeping Charlie because it only seems to grow on the borders of my beds and then creeps its way into all of them. Thankfully it’s easy to pull, but still… it’s annoying. Hope the lawn service fixes your bare patches. Bald may be beautiful but not if you’re a lawn.
As a kid I didn’t mind chocolate milk once in a while but never took to the strawberry.
Our weather has been crazy this spring as well. Dark, dreary and drizzly for weeks on end but apparently Maine is still in drought. Two warm days this week but mostly it’s still in the high 40’s.

    1. You’re right; that’s exactly what Creeping Charlie does…it’s always around the borders at first. Sneaky little bastard! I just have way too much right now to effectively rip out by hand.

It’s in the 40s today. That feels almost as weird as 80° did last week.

      1. We had two days of 60, it was lovely…. but fleeting.

  3. We haven’t had much rain and could use some . . . and your town could use a bit less. Good luck with the lawn service.

    1. It’s always a case of feast or famine, huh? Why can’t everyone have exactly the right amount of what they need? IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK?!

  4. When I was a wee lad we had Ovaltine then moved onto Quik. Honestly the only time I drank chocolate milk as an adult was at this Lehigh Valley Hot Dog joint called Yoccos. Never saw the original Scrubs but have an interest in both that reboot & Malcom in the middle.

    1. I’ve never had Ovaltine, though I always think of Ralph in “A Christmas Story” and his secret decoder ring whenever I hear about it. YooHoo, on the other hand…man, there’s something else I haven’t had in forever!

  5. Wow, I’m sorry to see the town underwater. Truly. That’s not something anyone wants to endure or deal with when the water finally recedes.
    1. Nothing creepy here, just snow that can’t make up it’s mind when and where to land so we keep covering and uncovering crops.
    2. I remember we were an Ovaltine house when I was young
    3. No new favs but AIC is routinely on my Spotify. I was so honored when my younger neighbor back in WA, who was a guitar player in a band, told me he knew I was “okay” when he heard me playing AIC.
    4. Scrubs is not my sort of show. I just can’t handle the corny comedy, sorry.

    1. I embody corny comedy, lol. I’m way closer to JD than I’d like to admit!

I love all the popular grunge bands, but AIC always had a special place in my heart. We got to see them in Portland—long after Layne Staley died, but they still put on a hell of a show.

  6. “No good comes from creepers, just sayin’.” Hence, why I hate horror movies. The bad guy or zombie is always “creeping” outside somewhere. It’s the same reason why I hate poison ivy, the Dallas Cowboys, New York Yankees, Las Angelas Lakers, ants and cockroaches, bears, snakes, and mountain lions. They all creep up on you. Ha, ha.

    1. See what I mean? Name one good thing that creeps! (Radiohead doesn’t count.)

  7. I dislike any fruit additives to milk but love my mocha. Go figure! I was never an Alice in Chains fan although I’m sure I’ve heard some of their songs. I was never much into grunge (?) but more a classic rock fan-The Who, Genesis, the Stones, etc. I have a lawn service; I mow and they do the fertilizing, aerating, overseeding, and moss/weed killing. The timing and effort got too much for me.

  8. I LOVED the original Scrubs, I haven’t watched the reboot…I don’t think I can, because I loved the original so much.
