One day last week, I grabbed the mail and ended up with a surprise that left me feeling very antsy. I am not proud of my reaction. I’m purple in this text exchange, Tara is green.

To be fair, I was not expecting to find the contents of my mailbox swarming with ants, so instinct kicked in when I dropped that handful of insect-covered mail into the street (and then later went chasing after half of it thanks to a sudden gust of wind). I have a lifelong phobia of ants, which is a little embarrassing to admit, but it is what it is.

I Raid-ed the little bastards and then cleaned the mailbox with soap and hot water. And hung up a tiny No Vacancy sign in case those suckers try to come back.

Not a bad way to spend a birthday(s)

Day 3 of my birthday weekend (hey, why not?) is winding down and I’m feeling pretty good. Maybe it’s the chocolate milk I drank this morning, a once-a-year treat I have enjoyed on every birthday since…well, 2024. Hey, not all traditions have to be longstanding! Or perhaps I am experiencing a general sense of accomplishment and wonder.

Probably all of the above.

Saturday, we were busy clearing the fallen trees and branches from our garden fence. As you’ll recall, 70-mph winds from a thunderstorm caused widespread tree damage across town two weeks ago. We broke out the chainsaw and made fairly quick work of everything.

By the way, that might actually have been the result of a lightning strike. Sure looks like it to me, but then again, I’m no lightning-damage expert.

All that hard work was rewarded Sunday evening with dinner at The Village Supper Club in Delavan. Not only was the ambience first-rate, if you’re into MCM vibes and lakefront views, but the food was predictably delicious, from the Crab De Jonghe starter to the pork shank over Boursin whipped potatoes. One bite and I’d decided this was my new favorite supper club entree ever.

Yes, we took stuff home. Leftover food, I should clarify, and not those nifty gold salt-and-pepper shakers I was afraid might accidentally fall into my pockets when I stood up to leave. (They did not, by the way.)

Today, for my actual birthday, I really wanted to go hiking and drink chocolate milk. Goal #1 was quickly accomplished, as mentioned above, but hitting the trail was a dicier proposition, as rain and thunderstorms were forecast all morning. I finally said eff it and went anyway.

Didn’t regret it for a second.

The rain was light and intermittent for my first stop, a three-miler along the Scuppernong Trail, so I stayed fairly dry. Even defied gravity for a bit. But my luck ran out when I pulled into the parking lot of Scuppernong Springs Nature Park (such fun names!). Within minutes I was drenched, and the trail was muddy, and thunder rumbled ominously, but I soldiered on because this was a really cool place!

There were so many side trails I started to get turned around, but I couldn’t help myself; each offered a completely unique experience. Finally I decided to cut my losses, afraid I might wander around hopelessly lost for hours, and backtracked until I made my way to Zoey.

I was absolutely soaked, but didn’t even care.

By the way, that wife of mine got me the best damn birthday gift ever. I was over the moon excited to unwrap this:

A NASA-themed rocket lava lamp?! Shut the front door! Possibly the only thing to compete for my lava lamp affection would be my obsession with spaceflight. She really nailed this gift. (Inter)stellar job, babe!

And, she made me a carrot cake—my favorite—that, to carry on the theme, is out of this world.

Feels like I got spoiled this year!

  1. Way to go, Tara! It’s great when gift givers gift gifts that we LOVE!

I’m not a fan of hiking in the rain on mud-soaked trails and you’re not a fan of ants, which don’t disturb me in the least . . . although I do want them to stay OUTSIDE.

Glad you enjoyed your rain-soaked hike and your supper club fare.

    1. Fortunately, it wasn’t too muddy until the very end. But it was really muddy then. In retrospect, I should have cut my hike five minutes shorter.

  2. This sounds like a great birthday weekend, egg laden mailbox ants aside.
The dinner club looks fab. Lovely meal presentation.
And yes, the NASA lava lamp is pure kitschy gold.
    Bravo Tara!

    1. Ever since you mentioned your toy Apollo capsule, I am on the lookout every time we hit an antique or vintage store. As I have been for rocket lava lamps, but to date have yet to find one.

      1. It’s amazing how few are out there when you think how popular space toys once were. We do a lot of antique stores and I’ve never seen the one I had. It was epic… spun around, lit up and then the doors opened and the astronaut came out.
I’m still looking for that picture.
        😉

      2. That’s a good point. I guess few people are willing to part with something so cool.

    1. On a semi-related note, my favorite meme during the Artemis II mission was a lunar flyby that showed Alice Kramden down there, just as Ralph always threatened.

  4. Happy birthday, Mark!

I’m so curious why the ants were drawn to the mailbox? A spilled shipment of maple syrup, or an intentional prank on Uncle Mark!

Rainy hikes are the best. I’m probably biased as a deprived desert rat, but there’s something incredible about being soaked to the bone in surrounded by trees and the patter of rainfall. The food and lava lamp are awesome too! What a great weekend!!

    1. Thank you! I was wondering the same thing about the ants. Never spotted a single one in there before, and suddenly, there are fifty billion swarming all over the place. What gives?

At least I had the foresight to pack a good rain jacket. Technically, it was the jacket that was soaked, not actually me. It did its job!

(Though my joggers did not, ergo, I was half-soaked. From the waist down.)

    1. Funny thing is, that was my first attempt. I tried at least another half a dozen times after that but could never duplicate it.

  6. Happy birthday! Please send some of that rain our way. The southern part of the state is currently on flames.

  7. Happy Birthday!

Maybe the ants were gathering for a birthday celebration in your honour? I have had infestations in my HOUSE before and omg, I do not want to revisit that particular time of my life. The tl;dr is I tried a lot of organic and natural solutions before bringing out the Raid, no regrets.

  8. Happy birthday! I love that lava lamp. I think the only thing better than receiving the perfect gift is finding the perfect gift and watching the recipient open it. Ants in the mailbox would totally creep me out.

  9. happy birthday!!! i love to extend mine out as long as possible too! as for the ants, i guessing ant man is not your favorite super hero, and you should probably not watch THEM, or maybe you should because it might make you laugh at the ‘monsters.’ glad you guys made it to ‘da club and tara really did an amazing job picking out that gift, as always, that is super cool, and she could definitely be a professional, gift picker-outer for hire one day!

  10. Good job, birthday boy. Remember when we actually got excited for another birthday? Nah, neither do I.

Great touch with the no vacancy sign. I feel like you could have left a picture of a Raid can next to your sign for those slow learners.
