After announcing my new Mazda purchase, several bloggers asked if I were planning on naming her. Even though I’ve never named a car in my life—I usually just refer to my current ride as “the Markmobile” on this here blog—the thought had crossed my mind.

I came close once. With my last Mazda. We’d gone up to Seattle shortly after purchasing her; Courtney Barnett was playing during the drive, so I told Tara, “I think I’ll call my car Courtney.” But I only ever referred to her by name a couple of times before reverting back to a technically-correct-if-generic “the Mazda.”

(Side note: Courtney Barnett is is an amazing indie/alternative musician. You should give her a listen.)

I’m not opposed to trying this whole naming thing out again, but where do I even begin? The only thing I know is, she’s a she. There are no hard and fast rules, of course–I’m all about equality–but I’ve always thought of cars as being female-gendered. There’s a historical precedence for this: sailors usually named their ships after female figures for protection, affection, and to honor important women. When automobiles came along, they were viewed as symbols of beauty, grace, and dependable companionship, so the practice stuck.

The first name that popped into my head was Veronica. No idea why; the only association I have with that name is Archie and Jughead. Come to think of it, she was fond of the color red…

So, I could use your help! Just as I asked for suggestions naming our boat (which I appreciated, even though we never got around to actually naming said boat…err, sorry ’bout that!), I’d love to hear ideas for my new car.

Here are a couple of pics, to refresh your memory:

She sure looked pretty on the dealer’s lot, but then it started snowing, and by the time we got home she was covered in salt and road grime. We’ve had on-and-off rain lately, so I haven’t bothered running her through the carwash yet. Hence, no new pics.

Anyhoo. Feel free to suggest a name in the comments, please and thank you! If I choose yours, I’ll even give you a gift: my undying gratitude. Can’t put a price tag on that, folks!

You were hoping for cheese, weren’t you?

Snow more, no more

Speaking of that last round of snow, it’s hard to believe that we went from this

to this, in the span of 48 hours:

Last week we had our first thunderstorms of the season, and it’s currently 69° as I’m writing this, so it certainly feels like spring has sprung. I’m sure we’re not completely done with snow yet–there are a few flakes in Wednesday’s forecast, actually–but it’s looking less and less likely that I’ll get to strap on my Christmas-gifted snowshoes before putting them into storage for the season. Before long, I’ll be dodging mosquitoes and pulling weeds and freaking out about tornado warnings and staging chemical warfare against the ever-present poison ivy again.

Spring in the Midwest: it’s not to be trifled with.

Do you name your car? If so, what’s her (his?) name? What should I name my car? Has spring arrived in your neck of the woods yet?

  1. I just got a new Kia and if I were going to name her, it would be Judy. But I’m not sure if I’m going to yet. I usually don’t, but I had one car that was a Sylvia. I think she hated me. Your Mazda is pretty!

    1. Judy seems like a great name for a car. Makes me think of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

  2. I used to call my old Jeep “The JeepyJeep.” I haven’t name my new one at all. Which is weird, because most Jeep owners name theirs—and literally paint the name on their Jeep. I mean, being a fan of the Jeep wave (snobs, the ones that don’t wave!) and the whole ducking thing…but seeing as my Jeep is orange…the names seem a bit boring. I mean…Sunny, Sunkist, SunKissed…etc. *yawn*. Maybe at some point I’ll be inspired.

    1. I’m shocked you haven’t named yours, Kerri. Jeep owners are notoriously into their vehicles! (I’m jealous. I wanna get ducked.)

      1. Actually that car I had wasn’t a Mazda, it was a Mitsubishi Sapporo. Cute car but only two door and I had a baby to try to wrestle out of the back seat. It was also a manual transmission.

  3. I always want to name my car but then it never sticks. So, I don’t bother. She’s just the Subie. I have one car which makes me even less motivated. My Italian grandfather told us that he would never buy a Mazda since the name reminded him of the word for sh*t in Italian. 🙂 I liked the one I had a long time ago; they don’t make it anymore. My family had a silver Vega when I was in high school; we called it the Silver Bullet. Then it accidentally got painted green.

  4. It’s funny you mentioned Courtney as a car name because the welcome message on the Audi my husband bought says Hello Courtney! every single day. We need to change it but never seem to get around to it. 🤣
As for your Mazda… I’m thinking Ruby.
    Or Scarlet.

  5. Don’t believe that I’ve ever named a car. I try never to anthropomorphize objects, although I fail horribly with animals, who all end up with human names and traits of course. Googled the history of the Mazda name- I think in homage you could call her (although this selection should probably be considered non-binary) Ahura (Mazda) who I read was the West Asian/Persian god of wisdom, intelligence, and harmony that was part of the naming of the car brand back in the 30’s. That made me think of Lt. Uhura of Star Trek fame so if you’re a fan you could also use that close but not quite female associated name- even though it was her last name technically… or just keep life simple and call it The Car.
I absolutely do believe your weather change as we had the same. I hear we’ll be flirting with the 80’s before long so we’ve skipped winter, are now skipping spring and moving right into summer. I really had NO intention of moving to AZ. I feel totally duped.

    1. Impressive research there, Deb. Ahura will forever sound like Uhura to me, but that just seems like a mouthful. (Then again, Veronica’s got an additional syllable, so what do I know?)

Didn’t you just get 8″ of snow?!

  6. Oh the Markmobile looks like a sweet ride. Hmm, the name possibilities are endless. Thanks to the color you have lots of choices. Ruby. Scarlett. Big red (even though she looks more maroon to me.) You mentioned cheese as a reward. I could see that in the name too. The cheesemobile has a certain ring and tends to go with the Wisc- trend. Yes, so many choices! No matter what … safe travels and no more oil issues!!!

    1. You’re the second person to suggest both Ruby and Scarlett. I like them both (especially Ruby). Thanks for the suggestions!

I’m going to pass on the Cheesemobile, though. Maybe if it was yellow…
