Residents of the Great Lakes states are no strangers to cold, but I did a double-take when I checked the temperature this morning.

That’s chilly, even for us. And my weather station doesn’t really pick up wind, so even though the “Feels Like” temp showed the same, the actual wind chill according to the National Weather Service was -40°. Can’t say I’ve experienced that often. Or, umm, ever. It’s 1:30 in the afternoon and still -9°. Hence the Extreme Cold Warnings and school closures and pop-up warming shelters.

(Sorry, Suz. I know weather talk bores you. It’s a wonder you’ve stuck with me all these years.)

I was texting my son Rusty, who still resides in the Pacific Northwest, and he said, Wow that’s pretty cold. What does that even feel like? Hard to imagine.

I told him it literally hurts your skin. Every breath sears your lungs, and your nostrils freeze instantly. Frostbite can occur in minutes, so it’s not even safe to venture out. If you do, you’d better dress in as many layers as you can. Think Ralphie’s brother in A Christmas Story.

The crazy thing? It isn’t even supposed to get close to zero today. We might get there tomorrow. For sure on Sunday. At least we don’t have to worry about snow and ice like much of the South and Northeast.

Actually, the real crazy thing? If you look at the temperature graphic above, you’ll notice that it hit 57° this month. Just two weeks ago, we had a record high. That feels like some crazy fever dream I had once.

Because I’m a guy who prefers his linings to be silver, there is one positive side to this extreme cold: a hard freeze helps kill bugs. At least that’s what the locals say. All I know for sure is, we do not plan to venture out at all this weekend. But that’s okay; we ventured out on Tuesday evening for a rare midweek date. A local restaurant, North Shore Chophouse – a cozy little joint on Lake Koshkonong – does a Monthly Dinner Series: a five-course tasting menu that includes cocktail pairings. When I saw January was Caribbean Night, I wasted no time making reservations for the limited-seating event.

The meal was fantastic, as we knew it would be. We’d been to North Shore Chophouse once before, just two weeks after landing in Wisconsin, for an anniversary dinner that we raved about. I’m shocked it took us this long to go back; I blame that on having too many great dining options around. The meal cost $75/person, and that turned out to be a steal – especially considering that each cocktail was a normal, full-sized one. We assumed they’d be served in shot glasses or something, this being a “tasting menu” and whatnot, but nope! Had we known that, we might have skipped the pre-dinner cocktail. Eh, who am I kidding? Everyone made an immediate beeline to the bar. Ahh, Wisconsin.

They didn’t skimp on the food either.

Every bite was delicious. It’s hard to pick a favorite, but we both agreed the Baja Fish Taco took top prize. Most every sip, too (though I didn’t bother with the Red Stripe beer that accompanied the jerk chicken because I can only stomach sours). We were way too full by the time the truffles rolled around, but we brought those home and enjoyed them the next day.

Totally fun night, even if they had to roll us out of there. And no worries, we were fine to drive home safely, as the meal was spread out over several hours. We agreed this is something we’ll definitely do again. Each month’s theme is totally different, so there’s always something new.

If you’re in the path of this weekend’s winter storm, stay safe. And while beating the Patriots without our starting quarterback is going to take a small miracle, I’ll say it anyway: let’s go, Broncos! Stiddy as she goes.

  1. I can’t imagine walking home, much less driving, after that much booze. Unless “several hours” meant it was lunch AND dinner. Sounds like their special dinners are worth a little drive…but I’d have to sleep over at your house.

I was a bit over-dressed for my bike ride this morning.

    1. I’m pretty sure all that food helped soak up the alcohol too. I’d trade you the guest room if you shoveled the drive the next day!

  2. I love food pics and you do it in a fun and engaging way, like our friend River in Maine as well!

Q: how does Tara feel about you taking food pictures?

I’m constantly taking pictures of the food during the rare times we go out but I always get looks from the family… They don’t humor me much, which is unfortunate because I love to write about experiences in neat places, but they just sit there and inhale their food and it’s just not the same.

    1. Tara has learned to tolerate my food pics, ha. At least she knows now not to dig into her plate until I’ve gotten my shots. 🙂

  3. So what’s in a dirty monkey? I think that I’d vote the fish taco as the winner as well. Love me a good fish taco for sure. Do be extra careful if at some point you venture out and about.

    1. The lime crema really put that taco over the top!

I had to google the Dirty Monkey. There are different variations; ours definitely had rum, banana liqueur, Kahlua, and I’m guessing cream of coconut. Probably pineapple, as well. It was creamy and decadent – the perfect finish to an excellent meal.

  4. What a great idea for a dinner theme, especially in winter when everyone is dreaming of sun and warmth. Your fish taco is bigger than anything I seen served around here (and supposedly, they originated just over the border from where we live).

Good luck with the storm, it sounds like a doozy.

    1. The smart thing is, the restaurant holds the theme dinners on Tuesday nights – an evening they’re normally closed (at least this time of year). It’s a great way to make a little extra revenue.

And yes, -16 is wee bit chilly.
We’re due for a drop in temperature and a whopping storm Sunday night into Monday. Went grocery shopping today so I say… bring it!

  6. What a special dinner at quite a reasonable price. Not sure I could do it justice . . . a bit too much food and drink for me these days. Now, If they would let BFF and I split one dinner, that might work. 😀

  8. The coldest we ever experienced was -29 in South Dakota! How could you forget?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I’ll never forget that! But I have no idea what the wind chill was.

      1. That’s okay. Wind chill was invented by people who lived where it never really got cold. 😉 It made them feel hardier.

  9. Nothing like a reminder why I moved away from Minnesota. I remember -35 the winter before I left, not including wind chill. At least telecommuting is an option now. Do mid-westerners still plug in block heaters?

$75 is a lot for a meal, but you got a lot too. Especially these days – seems like restaurants charge double what they use to, and expected tips are more on top of it. Nice they gave you plenty of time to take it all in.

    1. It was most definitely a splurge. Sure, we’ll do it again – but not for a while!

Nobody plugs in block heaters that I know about, though when we lived in South Dakota in the ’80s, my dad used to plug in the AMC Eagle when it got cold. Base housing didn’t even come with a garage where we lived.

  10. You’ve got the description of this weather down like a lifelong native. This morning I had to do the full bundle up just to run the garbage can to the curb. That tasting menu looks delicious. And I love the Ralphie reference. We watch A Christmas Story every year. That and Love, Actually are probably my two favorite holiday movies.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. We watched them both last month too. The holidays wouldn’t be the holidays without Ralphie in his bunny suit!

I had to roll in the garbage and recycling bins on Thursday, so I feel your pain. Though at least it was still above zero then.

  11. wow, that looks like a stellar meal and well worth it. this should carry you both through the storm. yes, ours is due to get worse this weekend and hopefully better by Monday, so everyone is stocked up and ready to go! no school today and city and county offices closed, but libraries opened as warming centers. just trying to keep my face from freezing off, it’s good to have goals.

I’m sure I would lose a few fingers or worse due to my ignorance of how fast body heat can disappear in those temperatures. Sunny and 40 here today although we had a Cold Weather Advisory for tonight–a low of 25 degrees. I laughed a little at that!

  15. The photos really let us feel this fun dinner and gosh, seeing the red stripe brought me back to the 90s! Then the mention of sour reminded me of a time, think ’06, when my brother was here and took the hubs and I out to an ale house, great burgers, and he had a $35 glass of sour beer. Since that time I have seen many sours come down in price – and more options seem to be around.

  17. I am SO over this winter. My oldest daughter is losing her mind because the kids have been out of school more than in for the last two months! Makes working from home nearly impossible.

That tasting menu looks amazing! I’ve always wanted to do something like that, but the tasting menus around here always involve things like octopus, steak tartare, etc. No, thank you!

    1. I’m glad I didn’t have to juggle working from home with little kids. It’s hard enough with cats sometimes!

We did a tasting menu with James Beard chef Naomi Pomeroy (RIP) in Portland one year. That one was definitely more upscale and expensive. It actually did include steak tartare (surprisingly good!).

  25. You can tell people aren’t from the midwest if they find weather talk boring. It’s THE ONLY talk right now. It was above 0 degrees on my walk with the dog this afternoon, but since the “feels like” was -11, it didn’t feel like a win. Who thought getting a dog who needs to be walked three times a day when you live in Wisconsin was a good idea?

    Liked by 2 people

    1. YES. Suz is from Florida, so other than hurricanes, there isn’t much weather to talk about down there, I guess!

When we first started dating, Tara talked about getting a dog. The cold and snow cured her of that idea fast.

  29. That level of cold sounds, quite literally, horrifying. Even the ordinarily low temps we occasionally get here hurt when I breath, so I’d never cope. I tell you, I took my (metaphorical) hat off to the protestors in Minneapolis being out in that weather. I admired both their hardiness and dedication, although Himself fell across a live feed and it ended up taking over most of our afternoon & evening.

As Caroline says, drink drive limits in the UK would likely not allow even one full-size cocktail to pass the lips. It’s one of the reasons we almost never eat out as one of us would always have to do the decent thing and watch the other one drinking!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I’m tempted to say you get used to the cold, and I suppose that’s true to some extent, but it’s not like I’ve felt comfortable venturing out much over the past couple of weeks. It’s supposed to finally warm up back to normal next week. Of course, “normal” this time of year is still below freezing. But above zero!

The BAC in Wisconsin (and most other states) is .08. What is it in the UK?

      Like

  30. Yes, it’s 0.08 here too. But we tend to think in practical terms: for example, 2 small glasses of wine would put a woman over the limit and I don’t know any (even rugby player sized guys) who’d risk more than 1 pint of beer. You don’t see much of the police during the day in most towns, but in the evening, they abound with their breathalizers in hand. Pretty much everyone I know in the UK has been stopped and checked at least once, whereas my sister (who lives in St Louis) never has. And I know lots of people who’ve lost their licenses as a result.
