Like many people, I learned which way to turn a screw to tighten or loosen it through a simple mnemonic device: righty tighty, lefty loosey. Fun to say, easy to remember. Despite the fact that I have fastened and unfastened hundreds of objects in my life, this phrase still runs through my head every single time I pick up a screwdriver.

And yet, I still screw up from time to time. (Hardware humor: I nail it.)

This happened recently when I was doing an aquarium water change. I have a Python No-Spill Clean & Fill Gravel Cleaner, ’cause I’m fancy. It’s a nifty little system of tubing, hoses, and connectors that hooks up to a faucet so you can drain and fill a tank without using buckets or siphons.

The adapter hooks up to our bathroom sink faucet. Because I’m screwing it on upside down though, my brain always gets the whole righty tighty, lefty loosey thing backwards. A couple of weeks ago, I could not get the damn thing to come off. I even busted out a pair of pliers…but then finally figured out, after much grunting and swearing, that I was actually tightening it instead of loosening it. I’m lucky I didn’t strip the threads.

I’m not the only one whose fingers are moving contrary to expectations when attempting this feat. According to the internet, when an item is upside down, you often look at it from the wrong direction, which can reverse the apparent “right” and “left” for the top part, making it confusing.

It’s lunacy, I tell you.

Clockwise to tighten, counter-clockwise to loosen. That’s the real secret. But sadly, there’s no catchy way to remember that.

Bucking trends is my favorite thing to do

“First day hikes” have become pretty popular in recent years. Having never met a trend I didn’t want to buck, I decided to mix things up and do a “last day hike” instead. Wednesday was a state holiday and Tara had to work, so I headed out to Lapham Peak in the Kettle Moraine State Forest that morning. My destination?

The Ice Age Trail. Which, believe me, was appropriately named. It was a tad frigid out! But I enjoy winter hikes; there’s just something about the peaceful tranquility of a nearly deserted forest following a fresh snowfall. Alas, it wasn’t deep enough for snowshoes–there was maybe 2-3″ of packed snow on the trail–but this also made for relatively easy going.

It was snowing lightly during my whole trek, which ended up being about 3.5 miles. I haven’t done nearly as much hiking in Wisconsin as I have in other places I’ve lived, but it’s certainly not due to a lack of trails. Tending to our property takes up a lot of our free time during the prime hiking season. I’m not one for resolutions, but I would like to hike more in 2026. If that means taking Fridays off here and there, so be it.

I was back home by mid-afternoon, and Tara and I got down to the business of partying a few hours later. Ilsa, you’ll appreciate (and probably want to recreate) one of these photos.

We were rockin’ out to some great records, like Alice In Chains and Credence Clearwater Revival and Ozzy, while playing Skip-Bo and enjoying adult beverages. Tara made redneck eggrolls and sesame noodles, as is our tradition, and we were wide awake when midnight rolled around.

New Year’s Day was mostly spent in the basement with a fire in the wood stove and an unintentional Rob Reiner tribute (When Harry Met Sally followed by Misery). It snowed nonstop for about four hours, which made things extra cozy. The cats on our laps didn’t hurt either.

It was weird, having this one work day today sandwiched in between what are essentially two weekends. Next year (err…this year, next holiday season) will be nicer, having the big holidays fall on Thursday and Friday. I’m already itchin’ to get those decorations back up!

OK, not really. But check back with me in April.

Oh, one more thing. Remember how we’d booked a room in Custer for Burning Beetle weekend, on the off chance we wanted to go? The closer we got to the trip (two weeks from today), the less appealing driving 11 hours to the Black Hills started sounding. Weather was always a potential factor (even though South Dakota hasn’t had much of a winter yet), but it’s more than than. Namely, the expense involved: once you add up the hotel rooms, food, drinks, and gas, that’s one pricey getaway. We decided the money would be more wisely spent on more immediate needs, like our mortgage and groceries and car payment. Plus, we really need a new garage door. So, I cancelled the hotel reservation, which was fully refundable.

Someday we’ll go back (probably), but I’m not too disappointed. There will be plenty of other adventures in 2026.

  1. You know it! Just don’t let my kids see.

I will be the first of many, probably, to say we need to see a recipe for those redneck egg rolls.

Have I told you, or have you surmised, that hiking is my family’s favorite group activity?

And since you linked to my post with all the pictures, I’m reminded that you didn’t comment on me captioning the barn picture with “The owners live in that barn. (Are you drooling, M? They just need an iconic well, some flamingos, and to throw in a lighthouse)”?

    1. Well, to be fair, I also didn’t answer any of the questions you asked. What can I say? I have a short attention span!

      1. The questions are optional. I thought you’d acknowledge the personal shout-out, unless you didn’t realize that was aimed at you. But how many other Ms like barns, lighthouses, flamingos, and had a rude awakening about what a well looks like? You may have skipped the caption. It’s okay.

      2. LOL…of course I knew that was a shout-out to me! Sorry, but there was a lot to see and digest here. Know that I appreciated it very much! Not to fear, I never skip the captions and usually read through all the preceding comments.

      4. Also, that was the second photo. There were 26 more after (yes, I counted them). By the time I reached the pickle pizza, the flamingos were a distant memory!

      5. Oh yeah. And who could remember anything that came before the pickle pizza?

In the spirit of always wanting to try new things, I recently had pickle beer. Unsurprisingly, not a fan!

  2. What goes into a redneck eggroll ?

    1. A mixture of ground beef, pork sausage, carrots, and onions. Tara made them for me the first time we spent New Years together, and they have been a tradition ever since.

    1. It can be a lot of work or really simple, depending on your setup. I’ve got live plants and a fancy canister filter, so that’s a big more work, but with regular water changes and a deeper clean every couple of months, it pretty much runs itself.

  4. I really like the idea of last day and first day hikes… or hiking just about any day. It was odd seeing mushrooms peeking out of the snow. Your New Years Eve sounds pretty nice… except for the whole staying up until midnight part.

    1. The mushrooms on the log were pretty cool; I didn’t see them anywhere else.

For a couple of years when we first moved here, I didn’t bother staying up until midnight, but when you’re having fun playing cards and listening to music, the time flies by! We didn’t even eat until practically midnight.

Glad you were able to give the snowshoes a work out. The trail looks inviting.

    1. It’s funny, I mention them every year, and I always get people asking about them. I should just proactively share that they’re made with a mixture of ground beef and pork sausage, carrots, and onions. We dip them in sweet chili sauce or Sriracha. They’re really good!

  6. The Ice Age Trail does look appropriately named. It also looks like a great trek, especially this time of year. I know a lot of people head indoors for the winter, but I’m one of those oddballs who look for any opportunity to get outside and get that crisp air feel like you do. If I get too cold and have to circle back, well…that’s what hot chocolate is for. Still, I don’t know how I’d fare if snowshoes were involved. I’ve never taken a trip in them, and probably would trip up fairly often early in that process. The eggrolls and noodles sound like a great way to “roll” into the New Year!

    1. This is why I want a nice, flat meadow the first time I use my snowshoes. I’ve never worn them before, and I’m not sure what to expect.

The nice thing about Wisconsin hikes is, the trails are mostly level. There isn’t a lot of elevation gain, as you’d find in the Black Hills or PNW. Makes it a little easier to hike (especially in the snow).

  7. Sorry you didn’t get to use your new snowshoes on your Last Day Hike. Maybe next time. My dad used snowshoes growing up in Vermont, especially during sugaring season ~ to tap the maples to get the sap to boil down for maple syrup!

  8. CW vs CCW, like R/L, still requires adjustment if you’re upside down. You have to be facing the clock.

I celebrated the new year somewhere in the mid-Atlantic (where I also acquired my accent, from growing up on 1930-40s movies). It’s always midnight somewhere.

“When Harry Met Sally” is one of my all-time favorite movies. Tara had seen it before, but was always doing something else when it was on. This was the first time she sat down and gave it her full attention, and she was really impressed!

I hadn’t seen “Misery” in ages, but it definitely holds up.

    1. I was a little hesitant when I first got there, because it was pretty windy in the parking lot, but that was at the top of a hill. The trail itself winds through the forest below, and so it was sheltered down there. I was pretty comfortable most of the way.

  13. I respect your ideas about bucking trends rather than just following the crowd. For example, I have nothing against tattoos, but I won’t get one just because so many other people do.

During COVID, my wife and I were getting out and walking the inside of our mall before the stores opened. It always struck me as funny how most people walked in the same direction. The Springers, on the other hand, went against the grain. I actually prefer to buck trends.

  14. Love that photo of Tara and you! The way you celebrated was perfect; the Rob Reiner marathon sounds wonderful and meaningful. John and I did Car Quizzes of the 1970s, trying to name the make and model of various autos from that era. Then we moved on to music where I kicked his butt. 🙂 John has a narrower appreciation of music than I do and was amazed that I recognized groups like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. 🙂

    1. The Rob Reiner mini-marathon was unintentional. I knew he directed “When Harry Met Sally,” of course, but had totally forgotten that “Misery” was his, too. It was a fitting tribute.

Happy New Year! After our crab legs and a bottle of champagne (from Argyle in Willamette Valley!) I binged some Plathville while my husband watched the Buckeyes go down.

      1. Well, Plathville is pretty redneck! It’s a reality show based on one of those homeschooling families with a ton of kids living in rural Georgia. The kids are grown for the most part and their lives haven’t turned out so great. It’s like watching a train wreck!
