Occasionally, Tara or I will have a song stuck in our heads. Often without rhyme or reason. When this happens, we’ll have Alexa play it.

Last Thursday is a great example. As we were getting ready for work, Tara said, “Alexa, play ‘Suffer in Silence’ by The Frames.” This was a very out-of-left-field pick; we rarely listen to The Frames, Irish singer Glen Hansard’s band. The one song most people know is “Falling Slowly” from the movie Once. Anyway: we listened to the song, Tara left for work, and all was forgotten.

Until a few hours later, when I was scrolling through Facebook. I clicked on Memories, and the first thing that popped up?

Exactly 10 years earlier, we happened to see Glen Hansard play a show at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland.

To say this freaked me out is an understatement. If Glen Hansard or The Frames were in heavy rotation, that would be one thing. But I can’t remember the last time we gave ’em a spin. So, I immediately texted Tara, asking her what fresh sorcery was this?

I’ve written before about living in a simulation. And look, I’m not saying I actually believe all of this is pixels being controlled by a bunch of faceless, nameless overlords (probably some teenager whiling away his time in the basement). But I don’t not believe it either, you know? My life is absolutely swamped with bizarre “coincidences” like the Glen Hansard one. These things happen to me all the time: some obscure, seemingly random reference will pop into my head, out of the blue, with no apparent rhyme or reason. And then a day or two later, it will pop up again in some meaningful way in real life.

It’s impossible to make sense of any of this. I’ve seen ghosts, grew up reading The Berenstein Bears, was really bummed when Nelson Mandela died in prison in the ’80s, and have an uncanny ability for manifesting things out of thin air.

Oh, and my Fruit of the Loom underwear absolutely had a cornucopia logo on the tag.

Aurora Bor-e-Wow-Us

Last week was exhausting. I blame it on those pesky Auroras, robbing me of sleep two nights in a row.

I’m not really complaining, even if I ended up standing in a windswept field for over an hour both Tuesday and Wednesday night, my ungloved fingers half-frozen from the cold. They were absolutely magical, and we’re at the tail end of an 11-year solar maximum cycle, so enjoy them while you can.

The clouds were being a pain in the ass at times, but the Aurora still found a way to impress, each gap glowing bright red and green, making those gaps look like clouds.

Talk about a pharmaceutical-free mind trip. This would totally be my band’s debut album cover, by the way.

Chomp, chomp

This was one of our busier weekends in recent memory.

We spent most of Saturday in Madison. The weather was crazy-warm – 69°, what?! – and we wanted to take advantage by wandering around Willy Street, checking out some of the shops in one of the city’s more eclectic ‘hoods. Spent a couple of hours there before meeting up with blogging friend Shelly and her husband Tracy, who recently traded in the Airstream life for a home on a foundation instead of wheels, buying a house right here in Wisco. We’d met them last year when they were passing through, so it almost felt like meeting up with an old friend. Old as in known-you-for-awhile, not geez-you’re-gettin’-up-there-in-years, I should stress.

They invited us to check out their house and we were more than game. If you read Shelly, you know they are living in an apartment for six months while working on repairs and renovations to their home, which is to be expected with a 100 y/o property. So, they gave us the grand tour, and we were impressed. Sure, there’s work to be done, but the place has a ton of charm. And you can’t beat the location! They are within easy walking distance of a bunch of great restaurants, bars, and shops, so we hoofed it over to Harmony Bar & Grill for lunch and drinks. Took us all of six minutes.

Even though I’m not even close to being a vegetarian, I ordered The Famous Harmony Walnut Burger, because that’s what they’re known for and I’ve always been a “When in Rome” guy. I will always order a restaurant’s signature dish if they’ve got one! Per their menu, Our secret recipe has been made with love for 30 years! This vegetarian option is rich and delicious…Tell us what you want on it: lettuce, tomato, mayo, rosemary garlic, fried onions, raw onions.

Much to my kinda-amazement, I really liked the burger. Much to my even-bigger amazement, Tara really liked the burger. She tried a bite and declared it better than her traditional beef one.

After chatting for a couple of hours (these two are very easy to converse with), we bid farewell ’cause we had more stops to make. First up: Atomic Antiques. We might as well have opened up our wallets and shook out the contents the moment we stepped inside ’cause we sure didn’t have trouble finding things we just had to have.

One of those was not, fortunately, this monstrosity:

A giant ceramic crocodile mauling a hapless deer, its neck lodged in the reptilian beast’s jaws – though certainly a conversation-sparker – would simply clash with our current decor.

Next, it was onto Trader Joe’s because did you know Thanksgiving is next week?! We needed a turkey and stocked up on some of our TJ’s faves before heading home for the night.

Today, we drove to Janesville, hitting a bunch of stores and dropping an obscene amount of money on groceries. I don’t want to talk about it.

Came home and fired up the John Deere for one last ride before he goes into hibernation. No, the grass didn’t need cutting, but our neighbor was kind enough to let a shit ton of leaves from his maple blow into our already-thrice-raked yard. If I never see another rake again, it’ll be too soon, so today I said F it and mulched instead.

Oh, and did I mention it was 22° colder than yesterday and the wind was whipping up something fierce? So, it felt especially frigid. But at least now I can confidently say, that should be a wrap on yard work for the rest of the year.

Amen to that.

Are we living in a simulation? Did you see the Northern Lights last week? Is your yard work done for the year?

  1. Now if you want to really sound like an old timer (old as in getting-up-there-in-years), you can tell people that the Harmony used to be the Karabis Brothers Bar and one of the brothers had identical twin sons who drove matching 1964 Mustangs. Or you can smuggle margarine from South Beloit.

So why was I sleeping while you were looking at those glorious aurorae?

    1. I am glad to have you stop by my blog regularly now because you are a fountain of Wisconsin knowledge and history. Much appreciated!

I think there were fewer clouds in your neck of the woods, so you would have had an unobstructed view of those celestial fireworks.

    2. My husband used to drive a cab in Madison and loves telling this story! Plus about one bar (I forget which) with hours for the third shift so he’d be called up pick up drunks at 8 am. Madison is an interesting place.

      2. I worked with someone from Yugoslavia and we were going to have an early morning meeting on the way to another meeting. She wanted us to meet in a bar and was shocked that bars weren’t open at that time (probably 7 AM). She said where she was from men had an eye opener on the way to factory or mine work in the morning. When one of us suggested a drink after the second meeting to celebrate, she thought that sounded decadent and perverse. It was okay to drink between 5 and 7 AM, but drinking around noon was only for drunks.

      3. My husband lived in Prague for a while and reports similar.

Only partly related: I was in a bar recently with a poster on the wall of a cartoon person considering what to write on a form: “Should I put day-drinking under Experience or Special Skills”? I don’t know if the form was supposed to be a job application or a D&D character sheet, but either way it’s pretty funny.

  2. I’m upset to have missed the latest round of the aurora; my neighborhood people saw it but I was at my daughter’s with a grandson and couldn’t view it from there. 😦 You got incredible photos! I would like that burger, not being a fan of hamburgers. (something about the texture)

  3. I’ve had the Pogues stuck in my head this week. The simulation man must be an Irishman.. And surprisingly, we saw the solar flare here in Phoenix… I was woken up in the middle of the night to witness the blood red sky. Kinda cool, though not as neat as your pictures, and certainly not worth being woken up for. 😅 Looks like a great week–including the walnut burger and wild antique shop!

      1. that movie is where I first heard glen and loved his music instantly, went to see the frames in Chicago and then he’s been to detroit and Ann Arbor with the frames and with marketa (as the swell season) a number of times since. they were shocked when they won the academy awards for their song! okay, yes, I’m a nerd. and it was hard to understand him speaking

  5. I was quite ticked that we had a week of solid clouds and missed the aurora completely. Glad you saw them this time around.
Walnut burger? I’m having a hard time believing that’s better than actual beef. How much alcohol was consumed before this review?
And don’t get me started on grocery prices. That will make me drink.

    1. Just one Bloody Mary at that point! And only one cocktail afterward. My review is not influenced by alcohol in the slightest, hard as that is to believe.

  6. Honestly, there have been times in my when I’ve wondered about strings of coincidences. But they’ve not happened for a while. Maybe that’s why my manifesting game isn’t as good as yours? Or maybe I’ve just become less attuned that that side of my life because I now live with such a science based down to earth guy?

I’m totally with you on the “when in Rome” maxim, I always go that way and have yet to be disappointed. Unless it was something made out of mushrooms, and then I’d have to give it a miss.

The aurora photos are amazing. Well worth you standing out in that field two nights running, freezing your mitts off so that you could share the photos with us! Honest, we’re truly grateful 😀

    1. Well, thank you for saying that. My practically frostbitten fingers appreciate the encouragement.

Mushrooms are actually one of two additions I made to the walnut burger. 🙂

Tara’s pretty science-based too. She’s definitely the skeptic in this relationship, though even she admits that one was pretty freaky.

  7. Those Northern Light photos are beyond amazing! I didn’t even hear about them this time around, so maybe not visible where we live. Honestly, I tried to see the giant Harvest Moon last week and it looked like the regular moon to me. Then someone said you had to look at it between such and such a time. Too much work for this girl!

Explain this walnut burger! It’s made with ground walnuts?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Oh, they were visible in Ohio. Even people in Oklahoma and Texas were able to see them. (Not to burst your bubble or anything! Maybe it was overcast where you are?)

The moon looked huge one day last week, but only when it was first cresting the horizon. Luckily, this coincided with my drive home. An hour later, it just looked like a regular ol’ moon, so yeah, timing was everything. Sounds like I got lucky last week with all my sky viewing.

It’s ground walnuts, cheese, and egg, so vegetarian but not vegan. It looked just like a regular beef patty; if I hadn’t known it wasn’t, I might have been totally fooled. I do like an occasional black bean burger, so I figured I probably wouldn’t spit it out.

  8. I’ve been listening to a lot of Celtic music lately which I chalk up to channeling some of my ancestors. This happens a lot as the holidays approach. We did see the aurora here! I was never able to see it in WA so it was a treat to stand in the back yard and view it clearly. Yes, I believe the yard and plants have been put to bed for the winter, even though we still have not had snow. Apparently we were hotter than San Diego a few days ago… This neighborhood is big into xeriscaping so we have tons of rocks and a miniscule patch of grass…small enough to mow with an old fashioned push mower. The leaves are off the trees and raked and I trimmed back the fringed sage.

    1. Ever since buying all those Enya CDs a few weeks ago (and having that spiritual cosmic half-drunk moment around the fire pit), I’ve been on a Celtic kick lately too. Even threw in some Loreena McKennitt, Clannad, Blue Stone, Enigma, Marcome, and a few others just to liven up the party.

There are times when I would kill for a xeriscape yard…

      1. Seems most new(er) developments out of metro Denver are pushing the xeriscape thing for various reasons. Rocks are fine in moderation but when you have an HOA that also stresses a structural color palette consisting of brown tones 99% of the time I’m missing the green a lot

    1. Harumph. Some neighbors you have! They could have at least clued you in to what was happening outside! Did you get a chance to see them last year? There were a couple of big events; I missed the one in May and was totally bummed out, but seeing them in October made up for that oversight.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. We drove out to the plains last May and saw them with the help of extended exposure phone shots, but not with the naked eye. October was cloudy, if I recall. So sadly, I’ve missed out many times now.

  15. I envy you the aurora experience. Too cloudy, too much light pollution here.

If Alexa was some random human DJ playing on a street corner, I’d buy the coincidence factor. But Facebook and Alexa are both Internet centric, and marketing algorithms and data sales drives the thing. I’d send you a link to an article describing how it all works, but it might make you a little paranoid. Congress critters worry about Chinese drones spying on us (DJI), but compared to American companies they’re inconsequential. Don’t be surprised if Glen Hansard pops up again in the near future.

The yardwork isn’t done, but it’s under control. Having spent a leaf pile sized stack of money on tree pruning and removal this year has reduced the work load quite a lot.

I get what you’re saying about Alexa, but this was Tara waking up with the song in her head 10 years’ to the day we saw him in concert. She asked Alexa to play the song to shake loose the earworm, not the other way around. THAT is what makes it so freaky to me.

I’m bummed she no longer writes her blog, cause I bet she’s a great read. Looking forward to hanging out with you guys again. How about when we have furniture! 🙂

Can you believe we missed the lights? I’ve been getting in bed early lately, so we drove only a short bit to stand in a field for a minute, and shrugged our shoulders and drove back. I’ve seen them once before but not as beautiful as these were. Tracy’s seen them big time, but STILL geez Louise we shoulda.

And because we’d gotten to know each other so well through our words, the actual relationship part was easy. Easier than any other in my life (and I know she agrees). Maybe I can at least convince her to make a guest appearance on my blog from time to time.
