Every morning, I face a tough decision. Often, I’m barely awake. It’s too early to think, I think, but think I do. Think I must. Because my next move sets the tone for the entire day.

I have to choose a coffee mug.

Scoff if you will (and Tara does), but picking a coffee cup is a decision I don’t take lightly. I will stand there, staring at that mug tree for, no exaggeration, a minute or two sometimes. Pondering, calculating, considering. Often, it’s my wife’s snickering that snaps me back to reality, ope, there goes gravity. (‘Scuse me, we just watched 8 Mile.)

“A mug’s a mug!” Tara says, but I disagree. She may be able to grab one willy-nilly without any forethought whatsoever, but my brain doesn’t work that way. Each mug is unique. Some are thicker than others, which allows your coffee to retain heat longer. If I’m taking a few sips before dashing off to work, I don’t need a big mug, but if I’m working from home, I’m going to be savoring that beverage. I want it to stay hot.

Then there’s the concept of mouth feel. The thickness of the rim and smoothness of the mug’s finish contribute to the sipping experience. A curved lip is especially appealing to the palate, I have found.

Let’s not overlook the handles. Some are more rounded versus square. There are big handles and smaller ones, so your grip varies. Certain mugs are just easier to pick up and put down, making them more aerodynamic. Like when you’re flying an airplane, you have to consider lift and drag. Tara might not give a flying fig about velocity ratio, but when I’m staring at those mugs, I am always thinking about the ratio of the distance moved by the effort to the distance moved by the load, i.e., input speed to output speed. I’m all about maximum efficiency, baby! The quicker that coffee cup touches my lips, the sooner its caffeinated magic will course through my veins.

Plus, c’mon, am I really going to use the Plant Lady flowerpot mug?!

(At least when I’m making a Moscow Mule the choice is an obvious one.)

Tara might think I’m a madman, but you know who doesn’t? Her cousin, Teran. He visited us a year ago and I was explaining all this to him one morning when he caught me staring at the wall. And you know what? He totally agreed with me! Both of us were explaining to Tara about the importance of mouth feel and it was a glorious moment. I felt vindicated.

And there’s zero percent chance he was humoring me, in case you’re wondering.

Eyes on the Fun Size Prize

Today is my town’s weird officially sanctioned trick-or-treating day. Sunday afternoon, 1–4 p.m. I spent a lot of time decorating the yard with about a million (okay, only five, but still!) skeletons with glowing red eyes that don’t even light up until it’s dark. They don’t look nearly as creepy when it’s bright and sunny out, as it naturally is today. Plus there’s all the solar-activated green glowing eyeballs that turn on automatically at dusk, and the glowing ghosts hanging from the trees, and the abundant and colorful light-up window decorations. None of these things are worth turning on in broad daylight IMHO.

Don’t even get me started on the fog machine, which I never bothered taking out of storage this year. I suppose I could hook it up, but won’t that just look like something’s burning on the front porch? Someone might call the fire department, and that would be awkward.

It’s maddening. Trick-or-treating should take place Halloween night, end of story.

None of this might even matter: we only got two trick-or-treaters last year, and only because I was outside raking leaves and practically had to chase them down. This is not a good look. My fellow townie, NGS, commented afterward that you’re supposed to turn your porch light on, which probably explains why the parade of costumed kids were walking by without stopping. That had me wondering whether I’d been labeled the neighborhood outcast for some reason. I question how effective turning the porch light on will be in the middle of the afternoon, but fine, I’ll conform to the weird little rules.

Just in case, I bought three bags of candy. And then made the mistake of leaving them on the counter.

Cats, I tell you!

You know how, if you have multiple children, one is generally considered “the good kid” and another is “the bad kid,” at least to a certain degree? It’s the same with cats. Laverne is definitely the sweet and gentle one in this family.

Don’t get me wrong, she’d totally go to town on that 100 Grand too, but only if a gust of wind knocked it off the counter. Shirley’s the ringleader too hungry to wait for an errant breeze. She had her jaws wrapped around that bag of candy faster than you can say “trick or treat.”

How long does it take you to choose a mug? Which is more important, mouth feel or velocity ratio? When does your community do trick-or-treating?

  1. My mug decision is EZ ~ we have multiple Mikasa mugs that are perfect! Perfect color. Perfect handle feel. Perfect mouth feel. Perfect balance. Perfect weight. Perfect size. So Mikasa is my go to mug for my first (and usually only) cup of tea for the day.

When Halloween falls on a Friday, it is INSANITY to schedule it for the preceding Sunday afternoon. BOO on your city council or city planners or party poopers.

You should hand out flyers as the kids show up on Sunday telling them that Halloween at your house will be on Friday night. Period.

    1. That’s a great idea actually! Though I’m not sure how many parents would send their kids out a second time, and to only one house.

      1. That’s OK. Kids love an opportunity to pull one over on their parents. In fact, you better buy more candy since they may bring all their friends. 😀

  2. It takes me a couple of seconds to decide between Snoopy and Dilbert. Two mugs enter the ring, one mug gets the “win.” Now, if we’re talking deciding on which t-shirt to wear, that takes a while. Pro and college t-shirts take up most of the closet, and there are way more factors that go into that selection. As for mug selection, I am a mouth feel guy. I didn’t think I’d ever type that, but here we are. Our community has the traditional door-to-door trick-or-treat between 6-8 PM. We get 80-100 kids a year, so of course we have to buy some “safety stock” of candy in case the number goes up. Ironically, we always seem to have some of the “safety stock” around when the door closes…

    1. Oh, don’t even get me started on t-shirt selection. I work from home three days a week, so that’s three days of solid indecision right there. Plus weekends.

Mouth feel is so under-appreciated! (Didn’t think I’d ever type that either, but like you said, here we are.)

  4. My husband has one mug.. and only one… he will drink coffee from. Out of an entire cabinet full, one. When it chipped and I tried to throw it out? He balked. When the handle broke off and I tried to throw it out? He glued it back on. It’s 30 years old, and someday it will be unrepairable. I’ll have to put him on suicide watch then.
Lol at your candy stealing cat. $100,000 bars are my absolute fave and I can’t find any this year. Very disappointing.

  5. Although I have many mugs, I usually put my coffee in a tall silver mug with a lid because I like my coffee to stay VERY hot. You’re right about mouth feel though and how big/small the grip is. These are all important factors. I can’t imagine having Halloween on any date other than October 31st which is All Hallows Eve, the day before All Saints Day, November 1.

  6. For me it’s all about the rim. I cannot stand those thick rounded rims. There’s got to be a little lip on the coffee mug. It improves not just the sipping but the slurping.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Yes, exactly! I hate a thick rim, though with my heaviest-duty mug, that’s the tradeoff for keeping the coffee hotter longer. And that little lip acts as a nice funnel for channeling the liquid into your mouth without excess runoff.

  7. Pre-retirement, I used lidded travel mugs to keep my drink HOT. As all of the mugs were the same, except for color, I color-coordinated my mug with my outfit for the day. Now, I have a variety of mugs I use. I tend to focus on mug size and the exterior design. I have two or three that are my favorites and a few others that I fall back on if my first choices are unavailable. Strangely enough, I have also been planning a mug-themed post.

  8. I keep it simple. A reused glass yogurt container for a cortado. An espresso cup for a shot of espresso. A special mug that was given to me years ago if I want a full cup. And I preheat them by pouring water in and heating it in the microwave.

And Hallowe’en is on October 31. There are no special hours. Little kids tend to come early, bigger kids late. No rules.

    1. Maybe I should embrace simplicity. All that decision-making so early in the morning is exhausting.

I guess we’ll see if any kids show up on the 31st. Gotta say, we’ve had a veritable run already: 14 trick-or-treaters and counting. May not sound like much, but that’s 7x the number last year. I guess the porch light really is key!

  14. I am with you on the mug! Andy laughs at me, but I will rotate mugs into storage because having a seasonal mug is my priority. There’s my Father Christmas mug or holiday in Rome mug options for December, my Loon mug for late summer/fall (or maybe the autumn leaf hand thrown mug from Virgina) and a choice of a pretty winter landscape or winter deer on hand thrown Utah pottery for post holiday winter. And in the spring, out comes the tea mug with the hooded oriole the very first day I see/hear the oriole in my yard. It’s the seasonally appropriate little things that make me happy!

Someone once gave me a large fat mug whose rim sloped inward. I was horrified, and could not even attempt to drink a sip out of it. The mouthfeel was completely wrong. But, a hand-thrown pottery mug whose rim slopes outward and narrows to almost a point? Magic.

My “travel destiations” mug is on deck. Feeling extra love for our rabbit? The bunny mug gets filled. You get the picture (haha – pun!).
