For the record, I’m not the only one who is skeleton-happy these days. I found myself behind this motorcycle for much of my Wednesday commute home. I was very subtle when snapping the pic because I didn’t want the biker to give me a sternum look.

Good thing no cops were around. He might have been ticketed for exceeding the maxilla speed limit.

Sorry, but skeleton puns tickle my funny bone. You probably don’t find them as humerus as I do. I’ll stop now.

What I won’t stop doing is decorating. Yesterday, I was hanging a bunch of ghosts in trees, as one does, when a neighbor driving by stopped and rolled down her window.

“I love all your decorations!” she gushed. “You’re very spirited. Makes me smile every time I drive by.”

Which, of course, only makes me want to do MOREMOREMORE. Maybe we’re not as far off from being a Destination House as I’d thought.

Lest you think I’m the only one into this over-the-top display, I’ll have you know this is totally a MarTar joint. Just this morning, Tara texted, Idea for the skeletons next year? Line them up walking a’la Abbey Road.

Excellent idea, babe! I’m sure we can work it out, we can work it out.

Birds of a feather photo together.

A few months ago, my Bird Buddy stopped working. Specifically, the charging cable would no longer connect to the camera, so essentially I had a $150 plastic bird feeder.

Honestly, I’d long ago stopped scrolling through my photo feed on a daily basis. There are only so many pics of birds one can look at, y’know? But then, a funny thing happened: I started to miss looking at those bird pics.

Further proof that you always want what you can’t have.

It’s fun to keep tabs on our birds seasonally. Harry and Sally (our Northern Cardinal pair) are year-round residents; we believe they’re nesting in our Alberta spruce. Likewise, the sparrows, finches, and wrens are regulars, always stopping by for a bite to eat. But the blue jays, goldfinches, grosbeaks, white-breasted nuthatches, dark-eyed juncos, orioles, and others are only around for a short time based on their migratory patterns. You snooze, you lose, and with a camera that no longer worked–the whole point of the Bird Buddy–I was doing a lot of snoozing and losing.

But there’s one defining character trait I am proud of: my stubbornness. I’m your classic Taurus, unwilling to ever let anything go without a fight. Like the time I got a refund on a non-refundable hotel room. Call it persistence or manifestation or whatever you want, but the bottom line is, I am not one to give up when things don’t go my way.

(I’d make a helluva stalker, come to think of it…)

So, I reached out to Bird Buddy directly. Explained my issue and asked for advice. They had me try a few things, like cleaning out the camera port and using a different cable, all to no avail.

And then they sent me a replacement camera, free of charge.

Was I secretly hoping this might happen? I’d be lying if I said no. But I certainly didn’t expect it. I’m sure the warranty had long since expired. So, hats off to these guys for their excellent customer service! They were friendly, patient, and prompt, never asking for a proof of purchase, and they didn’t make me jump through hoops. They just had me send the dysfunctional camera back and replaced it at no cost.

More companies should take a cue from the BB folks, don’tcha think?

To weekly or not to weekly, that is the question…

Ohio’s own Ally Bean wrote an interesting post recently in which she talked about bloggers who write using a self-created prompt on a specific day of the week. A bunch of my favorite bloggers do this (usually on Fridays) and I always enjoy their posts. It takes a certain discipline to regularly follow prompts.

I’ve toyed with the idea myself, though I worry that being forced to follow a prompt might limit my creativity. I’m rarely at a loss for things to say already! But I’ve (almost) never met a challenge I haven’t embraced, so I asked Ally what my self-created prompt should be and which day of the week I should choose. Her response?

You could do a Wonderful [or Weird or Wacky] Wisconsin Wednesday dealio. Or a Tipsy Tuesday wherein you share how to make all the great cocktails you drink.

I like both those ideas. A lot! But doing them every week would be a recipe for burnout. It got the gears turning, though. I thought, why not come up with a different theme for every day and alternate them weekly? Could be fun, and only having to use the same prompt every sixth week would keep things fresh. Here’s what I’m thinking:

  • Mundane Monday. I could do a snapshot of my day, like I did randomly in July. Or talk about books I’m reading, TV shows I’m into, recipes I like, songs in heavy rotation on my iPod or Spotify…pretty much any topic that fits the definition of mundane (“dull and ordinary”).
  • Tipsy Tuesday. In addition to cocktail recipes, I could write about favorite dive bars, memorable drinking experiences, go-to appetizers, jukebox heroes, etc.
  • Wisco Wednesday. All about my Wisconsin experiences and discoveries: the wonderful, the weird, and the wacky, like Ally suggested.
  • Throwback Thursday. A throwback itself to the #TBT social media trend where people share old photos, memories, and other nostalgic content.
  • Foto Friday. One photograph from any time in my life and the story behind it. And yes, substituting foto for photo bugs me, but it’s all about the alliteration.

No weekends. I’m way too busy with yard work, and even if I’m not, daddy needs his rest, kids.

I’m still mulling this over. I could always try it out and decide after the first five weeks whether to keep it going. So, help a brother blogger out…

Do you look forward to posts from bloggers who use daily or weekly prompts? Are you one of those bloggers? Should I give this a try? If so, would you suggest any changes to my list? I’m open to more ideas!

  1. Since I’m one of those bloggers… Monday – News You Can’t Use and Friday – Let’s Play… I’m all for that idea. Especially it Tuesday involves craft cocktails. Wisconsin Wednesday will be fun for all us non-Sconnies too.
And though I used to be as wild about holiday decorating as you and admit I miss the destination house compliments, I just don’t have it in me anymore. 100 trips up and down the cellar steps is simply more than my knee can tolerate these days.
Getting older is no picnic, and as it turns out… not festive either.

    1. Yeah, I figured you’d be Team Prompts!

I sometimes wonder when I’ll tire of going all out to decorate. I’d probably have to be in a wheelchair before quitting. Scratch that; even then, I’m sure I’d just have Tara wheel me around the yard to set things up.

  2. Thanks for the shoutout. I like all your day of the week ideas. If it was me I’d go with whichever one seems the easiest. I mean after dragging all your holiday decorations around + tending to your large property, you deserve to give yourself a break in blogland.

    1. Thank you for the inspiration! The easiest solution for me is mixing them up, a different day every week, so that’s what I’m going to try.

  3. I say why not give the prompts a go- see how it all plays out. It’s your blog to change up as you like…or stick with what you do so well now. As I tell my grands- you never know until you try 🙂

    1. Exactly! The way things are nowadays, even the bare minimum seems like a huge accomplishment.

  5. I love the motorcycle bones passenger and was wondering if that would qualify the driver to get in those lanes where you have to have 2 or more passengers in your vehicle to get in the special commuter lane.? it doesn’t say anything about them having to be alive. also love tara’s abbey road idea for next year.

    1. When I lived in the PNW, people would sometimes cheat by placing dummies in the passenger seat so they could use the commuter lane. You’d always hear about people getting ticketed for that. Luckily, there are no commuter lanes here. Even luckier, for the most part there’s no need for commuter lanes here!

  6. I like reading other people’s prompts but couldn’t keep up with it myself. I’m too abstract random for that. John (boyfriend) has a neighbor who decorates with thousands of dollars of lights, gravestones and skeletons as tall as his house. John is of the “turn out the light on Halloween” type, so he comes to my house where I wear my Star Trek uniform and hand out candy.

    1. The next best thing to being a Destination House? Living next door to a Destination House! You get to enjoy the decorations without all the expense. Win/win!

  7. Prompts sometimes help get the creative juices flowing . . . but you don’t seem to have an issue with that. So, who knows?

Glad the neighbors are digging your yard decor!

    1. On the rare occasions where I’m stuck figuring out what to write, I just start a post anyway, and the words usually flow.

I consider the prompts an insurance policy.

    1. A monthly prompt doesn’t sound nearly challenging enough though. I’m willing to give the weekly thing a try as long as there is variety. (I love your suggestions though!)

  10. Love when a company’s customer service far outmatches our expectations. Go Bird Buddy! And I support your skeleton obsession. Your jokes are quite humerus. The biker looked bone-tired though. He must have a bone to pick with all the strange looks and one liners. Ha, ha.

    1. I couldn’t tell if the biker was playing music, but if so, I really hope it was “Born To Be Wild.” Talk about an easy rider; his skeletal companion will never pester him by asking, “Are we there yet?”

  11. We share the persistence gene, Mark. I’m a nice guy, but don’t screw me over because I don’t give up easily when I think I’ve been wronged by “customer service.” (What a misnomer that is!) My dad was the same way. I still remember him being ticked when the payphone ate his dime, and initially, the phone company wouldn’t issue a refund. Any normal person would let it go, but that was not Dad. 🤣 He wrote them a letter (mind you the postage was much more than ten cents). Still, they sent him an apology and a shiny new dime in the mail.

  13. Mark, two thoughts on the blog direction. 1) You should do you. Whatever feels right and has you the most intrigued and excited. 2) I love your current style, free-wheeling and unpredictable. I myself couldn’t “be prompted.” Just not my style.

    1. Tara pretty much said everything you did in your second point. She doesn’t think I should box myself in. Other than Wisco Wednesday, I can see that happening.

      1. I agree with Ally’s thoughts on WW. Of all the ones listed, that one is right in your wheelhouse, and represents a lot of what I love about visiting here in the first place.

  14. That company did deserve a shout out for not only good customer service, but for wanting the old camera back (not just for accountability – but maybe they will actually try to figure out what went wrong). Oh and the birds you have visit are so beautiful!!
Also, I read Ally’s post and while I already commented over there, I forgot to tell her about Cindy G’s friday prompt (and as you know, Ally mentioned a bunch of Friday prompts that were individual).
Anyhow, Cindy’s Friday post came to mind again just now because for some reason, I usually think of her blog because she consistently posts a “Fri-yay” themed post – she posts one other time per week, but I have really come to get used to those Friday posts.
The one that I really liked from your list was the Wisco Wednesday and think you could even use it to regularly explore the other themes
Like Wisco Wednesday with a throwback today, or Wisco Wednesday with mundane MarTar musings or photos or cocktails?
Hmmm – best wishes as you decide

    1. I hadn’t considered that they might want the camera back to figure out the problem and make improvements. They’ve already added a little rubber gasket to the charging port to keep out seeds and dust, so this was probably a recurring issue.

Wisco Wednesday is my favorite. I’m leaning in that direction.

I admit I always love the Tuesday quotes one of my blogger friends does but I love quotes. I like all your ideas except throwback Thursday is too much a thing. Also, good to know stalking is a viable career path

    1. Thank you for your feedback. You are one of the bloggers I thought of with the prompts, though yours feel pretty natural. I think if I do this, I’ll probably just pick Wisco Wednesday.

  21. I’m generally way behind in reading posts, so if you do something on Mondays, I’d probably not see it until Thursday anyway. ??

I say if it seems fun to you, then go for it. You aren’t in need of prompts, like you said, but it could be something different and enjoyable for you.

I love that your neighbors are enjoying your decor as well, and the Abby Road bit is clever!

I left my bird buddy at our old house, and now I kinda miss it. Tweet Tweet.

  22. When your neighbor said, “You’re very spirited,” did she realize she was making a Halloween pun?
When I look to see if I want to follow a blogger, the first criterion is their writing style/skill. After that I look to see how often they post. If it’s more than once a week, I usually pass them by. I just don’t have time to keep up with all that reading. If you try this, I’ll do my best to keep up, though! I just worry it’ll start to feel like a job, rather than fun.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. No worries; I have already decided against the prompts for that very reason.

And I didn’t even get the Halloween pun until you mentioned it…even though this post was already full of Halloween puns. Duh!

  23. Not sure how I missed this one. I could’ve just let it slip by, but who could let those fabulous seasonal puns pass by unappreciated 😀

I know you’ve already made a decision on the day specific prompts. Like you, I enjoy reading what others do with them, but I’d feel hemmed in by *having* to keep up the momentum. It’s like when I – briefly, very briefly – tried to blog daily. Nope, I’ll stick with my current weekly, whatever takes my fancy, practice. And I hope you do too (or only indulge in those ideas which seem like fun).

    1. Probably because I posted this one just two days before my latest, instead of my usual 3-4 days. I’m comfortable with my 2x/week schedule, which is why I decided against the regular prompts. 🙂

  24. Skeletons rule.

Our first bird camera didn’t work correctly and they sent us a replacement for free.

This camera works fine, but we keep forgetting to charge it. I think I’m just in a bird funk, since that’s not usually like me. To be fair though—my bird footage looks nothing like yours.
