Last Friday, when I tried logging onto Facebook, the following message popped up.

Your Facebook account has been suspended. This is because your account, or activity on it, doesn’t follow our Community Standards on cybersecurity.

In short order, I: a) panicked, and 2) filed an appeal. A permanent ban wouldn’t be the end of the world except for the fact that I manage CheeseGov’s Facebook account, and a business page can only be set up/accessed through a personal account.

“Just over a day,” my ass. It’s been four and counting (though the holiday weekend might have something to do with this). Wondering what I did to earn this suspension? As much as I’d like to say it was for inciting a riot or something badass like that, the truth is much more benign:

Not a damn thing.

Seriously. The only things I use Facebook for are to crosspost my blogs, look at my memories, and wish people a happy birthday. I rarely even comment, and when I do, it’s never anything objectionable. This is either a mistake (probably thanks to an AI bot) or my account was somehow hacked.

To say I’m annoyed is an understatement. Social media comprises the majority of my job, so these guys are messing with my livelihood. Not cool, man. So I sit, and I wait. There’s nothing else I can do at this point.

I feel like an innocent man on death row.

And the winner is…

On a lighter, brighter note, thank you for your votes on our kitchen paint! Turns out there was a pretty clear favorite:

Despite that, we’re going with the Blue Bayberry.

Trust me, I’m just as surprised as you are. Blue was my choice, and Tara liked the red. Ultimately, I left the final decision up to her…and was shocked when she came back from the hardware store with a can of Blue Bayberry.

Turns out the copper molds on the wall were the deciding factor. “Check this out,” I said to her a few nights ago, and held one up against both paint samples. Even Tara could not deny it looked way better against the blue. I don’t think she’s completely sold on this color choice, but she was swayed enough to give it a try. That’s the nice thing about paint: it’s never permanent. If we decide, six months from now, that the Brick Dust might look better, we can always redo it.

But I think the blue will look great. It creates a better contrast with the cabinets (I feel like the red would have been too much warm-on-warm), and the stainless appliances are really going to pop.

Not to mention those copper molds!

And we’ll have a barrel of fun.

It’s been a fantastic weekend…and it’s not over yet. Tara and I both took a PTO day today. We thought it would be nice to relax and recharge after a very full three days, but that won’t be the case after all thanks to the kitchen project. Today, we have to remove a cabinet above the fridge to make room for the taller new one; strip off the wallpaper y’all detest; and paint the ceiling and walls. Oh, and we have a plumber coming by at 3:00 to install a new kitchen faucet so the clock is ticking.

About that wallpaper. It’s tacky and dated, sure. But in a weird way, it sort of grew on us. Not enough to keep up permanently, but we decided we could live with it for a while.

Does it scream ‘70s kitchen? Absolutely. Do I love the ’70s and kitchens? Unabashedly. Maybe we’ll frame a strip of the wallpaper and hang it up in the newly painted kitchen.

How meta.

Busy as today will be, I can’t complain too much. Sunday, we ventured to Capitol Square for Taste of Madison, an annual two-day event that features 80+ food vendors, beverages, and live music. Portland used to have a similar event called The Bite; we went every year, but they eventually cancelled it. We went to Taste of Madison in 2022, three days after arriving in Wisconsin, but hadn’t been back since, either because of the weather or visitors.

This year, we had no guests and the weather was damn near perfect. It’s been on the cool side, in fact, and there are already signs of fall popping up.

Between the cheese curds, dumplings, pork belly adobo, Korean BBQ chicken, and Dubai chocolates – most plates are sample-sized and cost $7 – we did not go home hungry.

Then on Monday, we went to our first-ever Brewers game. Tara had actually never been to a MLB game before, and it had been over three decades for me. Luckily, some things never change. We still sang “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the 7th-inning stretch, but this being Wisconsin, we also sang “The Beer Barrel Polka” and cheered on the famous racing sausages. The hot dog won – not surprising, given the $1 hot dog Labor Day promotion.

The Brewers, sadly, did not win. But the game certainly wasn’t lacking excitement. The lead changed hands several times, with the Phillies eventually securing a 10-8 victory (the result of a very questionable umpire call that had the home crowd in an uproar and got our manager thrown out of the game for protesting).

Regardless, it was a ton of fun, and we’ll probably try to go to one game a year.

Gotta go; the kitchen isn’t going to paint itself blue!

  1. Are we ever gonna match schedules? You know I thought about A Taste of but went to a smaller street festival instead, and you know I went to a Brewers game just a couple of weeks ago (they won for me, dude). Not to turn this into a personal space, but you going to the Curd Fest? Maybe there! There!

    1. Curd Fest is this Saturday? Sorry, no can do…we’re going out of town next weekend and have way too much to do around here. But there’s another Curd Fest sponsored by Drink Wisconsinibly on Oct. 13. Maybe that one! There!

  2. Looking forward to seeing the final blue product. That sucks about FB, though. I once put a picture of a spatchcocked turkey on Twitter and got flagged for obscene content/nudity. Meanwhile, Elon Musk’s AI Grok is off the rails with unsolicited, unchecked deepfakes of Taylor Swift ripping off her clothes… We live in the worst timeline.

    1. OMG. That’s both horrible and hilarious! Thank god they didn’t flag me for posting a pic of a beer butt chicken.

    🤣
    The tasting festival sounds marvelous.
I’m ashamed to say I’ve never been to Fenway to see the Red Sox play, but then we don’t have a sausage race… so really, what’s the point?

    1. Ha! To be fair, I did say we weren’t basing our decision entirely on the majority vote. I appreciate all the comments. Bottom line, the people who voted for blue had the same reasons I did, and Tara – to her credit – was open-minded.

I’ve actually been to Fenway, but not for a game. I took a walking tour of Boston once and that was one of the stops. Had to see the Green Monster up close!

  4. Good luck with the appeal. Stuff like that is such a pain to deal with . . . especially since we can’t just pick up the phone and plead our case.

Sounds like a fun filled weekend. Work hard today!

    1. Tell me about it. I had to take a selfie and submit it as part of the appeal. I don’t do selfies. And, if for some reason it’s turned down, they ban me forever? For doing nothing? Unreal.

  5. I voted for the blue also thinking that the red would be too close to the wood in color and warmth. Believe it or not we have a taste of Madison also. We’re right next-door to Madison, Ohio, which is a little tiny village and they hold it in the library. Not so much like yours, but it’s fun.

    1. The people who voted for blue made the same argument, and that’s exactly how I felt. Thank you for seeing my side!

Your Taste of Madison sounds small-scale charming!

    1. I love the tool race, but is a bucket really considered a tool? I think of it as more of a swimming pool for the real tools (like the hammer and drill…I’m not sure about the brush either!).

  7. Facebook can be SO STUPID. Yet I use it way too much for notifications of activities, memories and marketplace. I hope it gets worked out soon! I enjoy our minor league games (Tacoma Rainiers) but haven’t been to a Mariners game in decades, even with the ease of taking the train up to Seattle.

    1. We always talked about going to a Mariners game, but even with the train, that would have been a much bigger production – and I’m sure we’d have wanted to stay overnight, too.

I got put in FB jail for my post about popcorn and then in double secret probation FB for posting about being put in FB jail for my post about popcorn, so there’s that, but I kind of saw it as a claim to fame a flyer a while. I’m still on team brick dust with tara, okay GoBlue if you must, because I am a Michigan Wolverine after all. glad you went to a game and at least the mascots were cool.

I had a small moment of triumph this morning- I was not rejected by CO DMV and now have my Colorado driver license…well the paper form for now until the real one comes. I am taking that as win given all the other ongoing crap but good God the picture… I look about 107.

  10. How dumb that you can only access a FB business page through a personal account. Seems risky for any business! I’m guessing your FB issue has to do with being hacked. I wonder if you’ll find out?

I can’t believe Tara had never been to a MLB game! Honestly, the Ketchup/Mustard/Onion/Relish Race is the highlight of any Guardians game for me!

  12. Facebook probably never comes back to explain what could have possibly flagged your account, right? How annoying.

Even though I picked red, I’m looking forward to the results once the wallpaper is gone (yes, frame a square!) and the walls are painted blue. Of course, if you hate it, I’m confident that none of us on Team Red will gloat (just kidding, I’m sure it will be fine).

So, did you get to try the Dubai Chocolate? And….?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Haha. I would expect nothing less than gloating for those who chose red!

The Dubai Chocolate was amazing. So much so, Tara went back to get more to bring home…but sadly, they had run out by that point.

  18. I have had the same experience with Amazon re publishing book reviews as you have had with FB. It’s now over twelve months since I was last able to post a review on Amazon and despite frequent emails to customer services asking what it was I was doing wrong (not complying with community standards was as specific as they got) I am still unable to post. I even bought a few e-books hoping that would be an incentive to reinstate my reviews (yes they took ALL my reviews down!) but no . . .

I hope your problem is resolved soon.

One of our bathrooms is original 1940a pink tile. Do I like it? No, but I just can’t bring myself to change it. Feels like destroying history, somehow. I love the idea of framing a bit of wallpaper, though. Another of our bathrooms is near the kitchen and I left it sunshine yellow when we moved in to remind me of what the entire kitchen/dining room looked like before it was this lovely taupe color. (The previous owner had this Swedish blue/yellow thing going.)
Looks like you have a perfect Christmas card photo there.
    Good luck with FB!

    1. I’m not crazy about pink, but I love tiled bathrooms, and I would leave it too. I’ve seen plenty of “House Hunters” episodes where they have that exact bathroom.

When we removed the cabinet above the refrigerator on Tuesday, we discovered harvest gold paint, so now we know what the original color of the kitchen was. How very ’70s!

We wanted a pic in front of the racing sausages, but they went by too fast. We’re headed north next weekend, and will spend some time in your state (Duluth and points north, to the Split Rock Lighthouse), so we’re hoping for a good Christmas card pic there.
