Three years ago today, we left South Dakota, arriving in Wisconsin the next day. Happy anniversary to us!

I’ve been methodically going through my blog for about two years now, fixing broken links (there are a lot since I’ve changed URLs multiple times), deleting media to free up space, correcting the occasional error, and even responding to comments I overlooked originally. Which confused a couple of you, who suddenly had eight-year-old replies pop up in your inbox. What can I say? I’m a completist!

Anyway. It’s also been a great trip down Memory Lane, and I am currently up to late 2019, which marked the end of our first year in South Dakota. It’s a weird read, because man, we were so enthralled with our life there. Looking at those posts now, I’m shocked we ever left, because I made Rapid City seem like Nirvana. Oh well, whatever, nevermind.

I’ll admit, reading those posts has made me all sorts of nostalgic. We had so much fun that first year! Every day was a new and exciting adventure, and for all its faults, there is no denying the Black Hills are spectacular. We loved our house. I landed my dream job. Twice. Why would we give all that up after four short years?!

Well, we had our reasons. And to be clear, neither of us has a single regret. As good as our life was there, it’s exponentially better here. Wisconsin is 1,000% more our vibe. Life is good.

Actually, I take that back. We have one regret: buying all new stainless steel kitchen appliances eight months before we left. Sure, they added a little value to the house when we sold it, but hindsight being what it is, I’d have kept the extra few thousand dollars and used that toward the move. And new appliances here, which are sorely needed.

And actually happening!

Today, we bought a brand new refrigerator, stove, and microwave oven. Sleek, shiny, and once again, stainless steel. Thanks to the extreme generosity of my parents, who surprised us with money to use toward the purchase. Those two really are the best.

The kitchen has been the one area in our home we haven’t updated. It’s sorely needed, guys:

It’s the only room we didn’t paint. The wallpaper is obnoxious. The lighting fixtures are outdated. The fridge is too small, the heating elements on the stove have dead spots, and the microwave went on the fritz months ago (hence our countertop backup). Oh, and there’s no dishwasher. A full kitchen remodel won’t happen for awhile, but the new appliances will go a long way toward modernizing the space. Bonus: we’ll haul the old refrigerator out to the garage and use it as a beer fridge (which further legitimizes our Wisconsin-ness).

So, we’re taking this opportunity to get rid of the wallpaper and finally paint the kitchen. Most of it will be a cream color that matches the living room, but we want an accent color where the wallpaper is. Something bold. This is where you guys, my faithful blog readers, come in. We are torn between two very different colors and need your help deciding which one to go with: brick dust or blue bayberry? Tara’s leaning in one direction and I have a slight preference for the other, but really, we like them both.

So, it’s the stretch of wall beneath the cabinets, and the tall wall with the knife rack. Would you mind casting a vote below? Keep in mind the color of the cabinets and the stainless steel appliances when choosing.

I’m not saying the fate of our kitchen rests entirely in your hands, but if there’s a strong consensus for one color over the other, that’ll certainly be a factor.

Thanks for your vote, and feel free to weigh in with any additional insights you may have!

  1. Which color makes you and Tara want to get in and cook up something delicious?

  2. I vote for the brick dust, but I have always loved red. (Hence our computer room).Plus it goes better with the floor which I don’t think you are replacing for awhile.

    1. That’s a good point (but I knew you’d be voting for the red regardless).

  3. Although I’m more of a blue person than a red person (in several ways), I voted for the red. Blue isn’t a great color to have around food… something about the psychology of our reaction to the color.

    1. Aww, now I feel sorry for blueberries!

  4. While both colors are great choices, I love blue bayberry – and have seen cupboards with a similar blue. I also like the blue bayberry because it gets us away from the “warmer orange tones” of the cupboards – which are nice by the way – I like the natural cupboards and they are in excellent condition.

Also, we have something in common with cleaning up blog files and replying to old comments – I did that earlier this year and people were like “Huh?”

    1. That was my concern, that the red doesn’t offer enough contrast with the cabinets. But clearly I am being outvoted here!

      1. I know – it seems like folks like that red! And for good reasons too!
And I do not think you can go wrong with either color – because both will make the kitchen feel strong and vibrant with the new appliances.
I actually love the current soft yellow – but think the new color (whichever one you choose) will be awesome

    Dear Team MarTar,

Your best option is this – take a look at the creamy color you’re going to use on the rest of the walls. If that color leans to the warmer side of cream, go with Brick Dust. If it leans to the cooler side of cream, go with Blue Bayberry.

    Signed,

Someone who spent countless hours agonizing over the correct shade of gray with which to repaint her bathroom walls, because the cool blue paint she chose during the remodel two years ago does not go well AT ALL with the warm blue tiles she put on the walls in the tub niche.

I guess I’ve learned things by osmosis after 17 years working at an art school.

  8. super great gift from the parents! this is a dream come true. before I got to that part I was going to say don’t forget the tikizebo, but I guess a kitchen is important too. my vote is for the brick dust, it seems more wisconsonish to me, and will go with your floor, the blue bayberry instantly sent my mind to blueberries for sal and all I could think of was Maine, but I’m guessing either will be beautiful, and feel confident that you will not be missing that wallpaper.

    1. Hmm. They didn’t say we had to use it for kitchen appliances…a new garage door was also a possibility. So, maybe we could get away with the tikizebo! (Only no, because Tara wants a greenhouse first.) I like the way you think though!

  9. It’s not quite the same red, but you’re in Wisconsin, ya gotta go with brick dust, right? Ha, ha, yea, please don’t leave your color choices up to me! That would be scary. Ha, ha. Both will be better choices. And yes, so courageous of you guys to move. Love that you know what you want and will work to get it. Awesome.

    1. I hadn’t even considered the whole Badgers tie-in. Maybe every room in our house should have a Wisconsin sports-related color scheme. Green and gold living room, blue and yellow bedroom…

…except I’d feel I was betraying my Broncos. Back to the drawing board then!

And thank you. Two big moves in four years is pretty courageous, I guess, but also kind of insane.

  16. I’m not sure if my original comment went through (it was giving me trouble), but I forgot to add this: maybe your parents gave you the money to change your kitchen less for you and more because they’re really hoping the wallpaper will be gone the next time they visit. 😉

    1. Haha! You’re actually not far off the mark: they do not like our current refrigerator, which is way too small…especially when they stock it with their favorite beer and wine. Turning it into a dedicated beer fridge will make their day!

  17. Goodness, I have more to say. While I really want to tell you to ignore all these red suggestions and go with blue, that would be self-serving, because I voted for blue. But do consider not just which color you like now (especially if you like both of them almost equally), but which color you think you will like for the long haul (not that you couldn’t repaint, but eww, who wants that chore?). When I was picking the color of my Subaru several years ago I really liked the orange, but went with the powder blue because I was pretty sure in a few years the orange would start to grate on me. (Plus, we park on our driveway and blue looks better against our house, which has brown tones – see? blue goes with brown! Hint, hint.)

    1. I love this comment because, cat’s out of the bag, blue is my choice. While it may not go with the floor as well as the red does, you’re right: at some point we’ll replace that ’70s linoleum, and the blue may very well be a better match. Lots to consider here.

BTW, I really wanted an orange Kona (it’s my favorite color), but they discontinued that option the previous model year. No regrets on the red though!

  20. I chose the blue, mainly because it’s a cool.color and I think cool colors play better off stainless. Red is a warm color and while I like it, the way the eye hits it might be off. That being said they’re both nice

    1. This is my argument too (Team Blue here). I even held a stainless steel knife against both samples for emphasis. But we shall see.

  21. Blue, because the red leans more orange and the yellow paint on the surrounding walls is a cooler, paler yellow. (At least in these photos, which is weird, because the wallpaper seems more or a mustard yellow, what was Dick thinking?!) If the surrounding yellow walls were warmer, I might go with the red, which would definitely fit your 70s vibe. Both are stronger, darker colors than I would pick, since I like brighter rooms, especially in houses with a lot of shade and long winters. Are you sure you want it that dark?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. No idea what Dick was thinking. I suspect the wallpaper was all Carol’s doing actually; it just doesn’t seem like him.

I’m also pushing for blue. We like to do a very bold accent wall (it’s kind of our thing – we have a forest green wall in the living room surrounded by light cream walls), and it’s such a small strip we’re painting in the kitchen, I don’t think it will darken up the space much at all.

  23. I’d go with the red (even though blue is my favorite color.) Matches up with the cabinets better, and a warmer color seems apt for a cooking space. Either would go with cream nicely.

I have a beer fridge, but I’m not sure it’d pass muster in Wisconsin. It’s a mini, and holds (barely) two 5 gallon corny kegs for home brew and a CO2 tank. If I were mechanical I’d turn it into a kegerator (taps built into the top), but picnic taps have to suffice. No room at all for Milwaukee’s best.

    1. The company I worked for in Camas had a kegerator (I’m sure they still do). Not being much of a beer drinker though, the novelty was lost on me.

  29. My vote would generally go with the blue, but the brick works better with the current flooring and a lot depends on the lighting in the room – both natural and added – as the the deeper tone of the blue could make it appear darker especially in the more wintery months.

Congrats on the shiny new appliances – it is sooo nice (we’ve just been down that road and are so happy with our purchases).

    1. The one thing the red had going for it was the flooring, but it’s such a small section of wall that’s actually being painted, it doesn’t matter too much. And the flooring is definitely not permanent.
