Back in January, when it was roughly 300 degrees colder and there was snow on the ground, I inadvertently created driveway art.

Welp, completely different season – and the John Deere rather than the Hyundai – but same outcome:

Looks like I was doing donuts in the yard, huh? It really just illustrates how haphazardly I cut the grass with my riding mower. No back-and-forth straight lines for this guy!

It’s pretty annoying actually. I don’t need to keep up with the Joneses, but I’d prefer a yard that wasn’t marred by deep grooves and muddy ruts. It’s just as bad out back.

I was not expecting this when I cut the grass Saturday morning. The ground is absolutely saturated after all the rain we’ve had (6.5″ in August alone and we’re only halfway through the month), so the John Deere was practically sinking into the lawn, and every time I made a turn – which was pretty often, as evidenced by these pics – JD would struggle to find purchase and slide sideways. I normally find cutting the grass to be therapeutic, but I was so focused on not destroying the lawn yesterday, it was the opposite of relaxing. I was glad to be done with it all. And my timing was perfect, because shortly after finishing, the sky grew dark and thunder began rumbling. The rest of the afternoon we had on-and-off storms.

August has been pretty wild, that’s for sure. My parents are arriving this week for their second and final visit of the year, and I was worried the weather wouldn’t cooperate (especially after their last visit, which was either blazing hot or cool and rainy, preventing us from playing bags even once). But it appears Mother Nature will be playing nice; they’re here from Wednesday to Tuesday.

Sunshine? Upper 60s-low 70s?! Sounds damn near perfect to me. We may actually get to hang out on the deck this time! And the break in the rain will be welcome. As much as I enjoy a good donut, I’m hoping the ground will dry out enough so I don’t tear up the yard next time I cut the grass.

Fantasizing About Outboard Motors Again

Not long ago, I made the mistake of saying to Tara, “I kinda wish we had a boat.”

“Shut up!” Tara replied. And not in a funny/surprised way like you sometimes hear a person say when they receive unexpected news, like,

“Hey, Taylor Swift is dropping a new album this week.
Shut up!

My wife meant this in the traditional sense i.e., I’d better close my mouth and never utter such nonsense again.

Because we had a boat once…and took it out on the water a grand total of one time in two years. (Well, twice if you count the time we drove it to the lake, launched it into the water, turned the key, and it wouldn’t start because of a dead battery. Oopsie.) She spent most of her time parked on the street in front of our house, which I’m sure the neighbors loved. Even if you’ve never owned a boat, you probably have an inkling that they are a lot of work. Geez Louise, just hitching the trailer to the pickup was a stressful ordeal every time. It didn’t help that our street was on a hill and the boat didn’t fit in the driveway. So, we sold her in 2022.

Three months later, we moved to Wisconsin. And bought a house on a level street, with a bonus parking pad. In a town that’s bisected by the Rock River.

You see where I’m going with this, right…?

And okay, no, we are not getting a boat again. I’m happy with kayaking! But every once in a while, I see people boating on the river, and can’t help but think how fun that would be. Honestly, if I’d known in May 2022 that we would be moving to Wisconsin in August 2022, I might have kept the boat. The move still seemed pretty far-fetched at the time (that’s how quickly the whole thing came together!), and we knew if it happened, the cash would come in handy. Plus, the logistics of getting the boat from Rapid City to Fort Atkinson would have been a nightmare, requiring two separate trips. I know we made the right decision…

…but again, with all this space, and a beautiful river and boat launch just minutes from home, I know we would have gotten out on the water a lot more than we ever did in South Dakota.

Hindsight, blah blah blah.

Anyway, Tara has warmed up to the idea of buying a small travel trailer in a couple of years, which in my opinion is much better than a boat. And that will definitely get used.

  1. And we’ve got just the opposite problem. Draught is forcing us to skip mowing our lawn altogether because it’s burning up and crunching in spots.
But my guy sputters about buying a boat now and then as well. Evinrude envy is a terrible thing..

I couldn’t predict where you were going after the driveway snow picture so nice job with the surprise factor! Tough mowing conditions for sure!

    1. She owes us! And my parents, too. We’ll take advantage of her good graces this visit.

Next time it’s this wet, I’ll try to hold off on the mowing as long as I can. But it’s gotta be done eventually, because all that rain makes the grass grow, of course!

As I’ve gotten older, I’ve given up some jobs, but I still like cutting the lawn with my riding lawn mower. I finally gave up my battles with the gophers, who have proven to be smarter than I am. Now, they only have to tolerate me running over their mounds every couple of weeks.

    1. I truly enjoy kayaking. There’s something soothing about being that close to the water, physically maneuvering your way through it, that you just don’t get on a boat.

  6. Mark…this is off topic, but I was just in FL telling my Sister and her Husband about how Gail tried to get you to buy her a 40lb bag of dog food on your lunch break to Fred Meyer and she was going to pay you with a check! REMEMBER THAT?

And I was like “NO, MARK…TELL HER NO”! LOLOL Just a funny memory that came up.

I’m going to begin by going out on a limb to suggest that you probably should not apply for a MLB team field crew position in your retirement years, or golf course crew for that matter, but could do well working in a quirky hipster or retro donut shop. if I was a career counselor for people who did not ask for my advice, that is. glad the weather will be good for the parental visit, you can turn that last experience around, hang out in the yard and go to a good supper club. boat advice not asked for: don’t buy one, become friends with someone who owns one, as has been my luck and it works well for all of us, and get the small trail trailer when you’re ready, that sounds like fun and adventure for sure and you’ll really use it.

    1. So you’re saying I should stick to being a Brew Crew fan rather than an actual groundskeeper? Probably good advice there.

Our neighbor Brian just so happens to have a boat, and we’re on pretty friendly terms. Time to take this relationship to the next level maybe…

  8. Actual donuts on the lawn would be much better. A glazed old fashioned, if you please.
It may be time to get out the scissors, get down on all fours, and hand cut the grass. It may be therapeutic. Not to your back and knees, but to your psyche (for the first 3 minutes).
Three cheers for a travel trailer!! We’re picking ours up in a few months!!!!

  9. I can’t deny that Himself gives the lawn guy on his ride-on mower some longing looks. When we were viewing a different property, he did say “this one would give me an excuse to buy a ride-on”, but sadly someone else beat us to that one.

I think they look like fun, until you have to use them in less than clement conditions and I would get bored if I had to go straight up and down all the time, so would probably end up with a messy pattern on the lawn.

    1. It’s been awhile since you’ve thrown me for a loop with a word or phrase, but “less than clement” did the trick. I’ve only ever heard “inclement.” 🙂

Because of the slope of my front yard and the trees, and various obstacles in the backyard, I really can’t do straight lines back and forth. Besides, like you said, where’s the fun in that?

    Fabulous photos of the sky!

I remember your parent’s visit. Hide the bourbon this time! Will you be kicking them out after four days? Have fun!

As for the boat … I get it. We used to have a fishing boat. It was ok. But what a pain in the butt, launching the boat, parking the car, getting in the boat, getting the car, pulling the boat out of the water, blah, blah, blah. It just wasn’t enough fun – especially the fishing part. And our lakes around here are kind of ugly.

    1. I wish I could blame it on mimosas. The JD even has a handy cupholder that I bet would hold a can of beer perfectly. And yet, I was stone cold sober. (Probably smart given the decisions.)

My parents get an exemption from the 4-day rule. Actually, the six days they’re staying this time is unusually brief. Last time, it was closer to 10.

Ugh, just reading about the hassle involved with a boat reminds me why we no longer have a boat.

  20. Seeing all those ruts in your lawn stresses me out! I’m so glad you said it rained after that, because if it was dry for too long, your grass might be toast. Personally, I love the lawn mowed in perfectly straight diagonal lines. I mean, that’s what I tell my husband as I don’t mow anything myself.
