The best thing about the 4th of July, to me, is that it marks a turning point. Yeah, there’s plenty of summer left – and the hottest/humidest part is yet to come – but at least the days are gradually growing shorter now. Before long, we’ll be seeing Halloween stuff in the stores.

(At least one of you just said “shut up!” out loud after reading that. Rude.)

Some people love 16 hours of daylight. I’m not one of them. Whether it’s dark at 5 p.m. or 10 p.m., my routine doesn’t change. Maybe if I were a farmer (dare to dream!) the extra light would come in handy, but my evenings are spent with The Office or Dexter or MasterChef or whatever show we’re binging regardless of the time of year. All that excess light just causes an annoying glare on the TV screen. I don’t mind morning walks in the dark either, even when there are creepy glowing eyes in the woods. It sure beats having your eyelids flutter open at 4:30 a.m. and finding the bedroom already light.

I’m not saying I hate summer – there is much to see and do and eat exclusive to this time of year – but I’d rank it fourth on my list of favorite seasons. And if that list includes seasonINGs, summer drops to 12th, edged out by basil but just ahead of Everything But the Bagel.

Mark’s Top 14 List of Seasons & Seasonings

  1. Autumn
  2. Salt
  3. Pepper
  4. Winter
  5. Garlic powder
  6. Cumin
  7. Thyme
  8. Spring
  9. Oregano
  10. Paprika
  11. Basil
  12. Summer
  13. Everything But the Bagel
  14. Onion powder

Anyway. The Fourth. It started with a bang (pre-dawn thunderstorms) but was otherwise pretty low-key. Skies cleared, the temperature soared, and we spent most of the afternoon in the basement, watching The Godfather on DVD. Random, but I queued up Independence Day last year, so instead of aliens blowing up the White House (god, I wish), someone made us an offer we couldn’t refuse. Later, we played cards, listened to records, got appropriately blitzed, and ended the evening with burgers and potato salad. We heard fireworks, and saw some flashes through the trees, but all in all it was pretty quiet ’round these parts. No complaints.

Saturday, we treated ourselves to lunch at Hi-Way Harry’s, a very unique steakhouse in Johnson Creek. The decor is Mid-Century Modern through and through, complete with a waterfall and lush gardens smack dab in the middle of the dining room. Very clubby and very red. Not surprisingly, the architect was a protege of Frank Lloyd Wright. Naturally, they make a great martini.

Next up, we hit two antique malls: one in Watertown, the other in Waterloo (and you can bet your ass I played the ABBA song as we rolled into town). Did we buy shit? Of course. Was it shit we needed? Of course not. Unless a ’70s-themed daisy-patterned stand mixer cover is considered a necessity.

I mean, that’s the point of vintage shops. Finding cool stuff you never knew you couldn’t live without.

Sunday was pretty much devoted to yard work. It was overcast, showery at times, and the humidity dropped a bit, so it was definitely more bearable than the past couple of weeks. We were even able to sit out on the deck for a bit while grilling a beer butt chicken.

How was your holiday? What’s your favorite season? Got a favorite seasoning?

  1. I like your list. Nicely done. Our holiday was quiet, the cicadas are gone, as were most of our neighbors so fewer houses shooting off fireworks.

Autumn is my favorite season. My favorite seasonings are from Penzeys. Ones like Mural of Flavor or Arizona Dreaming or Singapore Seasoning. Also they have a delicious Cinnamon Sugar with a nice touch of vanilla in it.

    1. Funny, I heard my first cicada of the season just yesterday. We don’t get ’em like you do though.

YES to Penzeys! I love that they take a stand against MAGA. Anything Penzey’s is good to me.

  2. Your list of seasonINGs is such a unique idea on the worn out and very limited 1-4 listing of the original seasons. But I wanted to make sure you knew I saw it! Yep, the fact that you “listened to records” as part of your holiday fun. I’ve been drawn to vinyl and even plastic (CDs) lately…more organic and true to the music (as in listening to an ‘album’ as intended). Filling the space – living room, outdoor area – with music is soul-filling. More so than the earphones/earbuds isolating experience…Anyway, hope you got refreshed and are ready to tackle the rest of summer. 🙂

    1. You’re right: as convenient as Spotify is, you just don’t get the same experience as you do when listening to an actual album. I even have a second record/CD player right next to my desk in the basement.

  4. The grand-dog Lila and I hung out for a few hours while her human parents visited with friends. I’ve been their official dog sitter and since my time here is limited I’m trying to give them as many opportunities to be humans while I can. It was truly unusually quiet here and I have no idea why but I was 100% okay with it. Autumn has to rank as #1 and as to the ING question… curry, garam masala, zatar…not all at the same time however. Clearly I am a spice blend sort of gal.

    1. “My time here is limited” must sound so morbid to the outsider! But taken in context, I get it. I’m glad you enjoyed a quiet holiday; I know that’s not often the case out there.

I bought garam masala once for a specific recipe, maybe five years ago, and still have most of it left. Guess I should figure out what that recipe was!

      1. Yep, I can only use that line with certain people without lots of explanations otherwise 😉 Lots of things benefit from garam masala besides Indian cuisine. Roasted veg for one.

Autumn beats summer hands down. Like you, I don’t care about more daylight and we’ve been 90 degrees for a week, I’m ready for crisp and cool.

  8. LOL moments here…yes. Yes! I was one of the rude ones at the very beginning. Halloween? Really? But did I redeem myself by singing along, sitting here at my desk, to Abba and “Waterloo”. I sure hope so. (Side note: You find the best Wisconsin supper clubs. Hi-Way Harry’s, you say? Never heard of it but it sounds fab.) 🥰

    1. Yep, you’re off the hook thanks to the ABBA singalong! You know, Hi-Way Harry’s isn’t technically a supper club (Tara and I actually had this conversation while there), but it sure feels like one. Definitely worth a visit if you’re ever up this way, hungry, and looking for a waterfall without going hiking.

  9. Our 4th was quiet, both literally and figuratively. Our neighbor who did the huge fireworks “show” has moved, so there was much less noise.

My favorite season is Autumn. Autumn brings slightly cooler temps and the promise that the horrible summer heat and humidity will end.

Cracker Barrel restaurants already have their Halloween decorations out.😬

  11. Greetings! Autumn and garlic pepper … yes. I can’t believe cayenne pepper didn’t make your list. It’s the one spice I would take with me to a desert island. I love antique malls. It wasn’t too long ago that I grabbed a kid’s book: Jerry Todd and Buffalo Bill Bathtub. Mighty fine reading.

    1. To be fair, this is only a partial list. Cayenne pepper is going to land somewhere between 15-30, probably below red pepper flakes (which probably should have ranked higher) but above coriander seed and dry mustard.

  12. First, I didn’t think “shut up.” I thought something much ruder, but you started it with your “at least the days are growing shorter now.” I don’t often say this, but WTF?!?!
Second, this made me laugh. My favorite season is summer (for obvious reasons). My least favorite seasoning is lemon pepper.
We landed at MSP on the morning of July 4th, so I spent the evening nodding off in a chair at 6pm (which my body thought was 3am).

    1. Well, if anyone was going to think I was off my rocker for eagerly awaiting shorter days, it would be a teacher!

Lemon pepper has its time and place, but that time and place is really only on limited selections of seafood. It probably wouldn’t even make my top 30.

Welcome back! Can’t wait to read all about your trip.

  20. WTH? Your 12 & 13 would be my 1 & 2! You need to make a list of seasonings that you hate because I’ve got a few that I just cannot stand.

We visited a cemetery on July 4th to see the grave of one of my husband’s childhood friends who died when they were 11 years old bike riding together. Although he attended the funeral, he had never visited the grave. Finally did it after 51 years. Later, we grilled steak and shrimp. Saturday, we went out on the town. Maybe I’ll post about it!

    1. I may have to expand on my seasonings list, which was pretty hastily thrown together. For me, the name Everything But the Bagel is misleading, as I actually only use it on a couple of things, mostly salads. You have always been a summer lover, so that doesn’t surprise me!

Sounds like a somber visit, but I’m glad your husband finally got out there to pay his respects.

We also had steak and shrimp, though a day later than you.

“beer butt chicken.” So many questions.

    1. Well shit, guess I’ll have to do that more often.

I’ve blogged about beer butt chicken before. I suppose the more chaste term is beer can chicken (but where’s the fun in that?). Just plop a whole bird on top of a can of beer, throw it on the grill, and let it cook away!

      Like

      1. Another blogger used to throw in something about sacrificing goats every now and then to crack me up.

Okay, I still don’t get it. I’m picturing a chicken balancing on a beer can straddling grill… lines, poles, what the heck do you call those things? Or you stick a can up the bird’s butt? Then how would the beer get to the chicken? See? Questions.

  24. season- fall. seasoning – those hot pepper flake things that you shake out and put on pizza or in anything to jazz it up a bit and give it a little extra kick. sometimes they make you choke from the spiciness level, but that just means they’re not too old and still have a kick.

good move on the stand mixer cover, I’m a bit jealous as my mixer is actually that yellow color and now that cover is off the market .

on the 4th I was in our town parade handing out/throwing a bajillion pieces of candy to kids while protesting against kings and wearing a red white and blue glittery crown,(queens are fine), then backyard hangout and burgers with a small and relaxed family group. hot as could be, probably lost weight from sweating.

Where we live determines a lot. Winter in North Dakota, where I spent my childhood, is way different than life on the coast of northern California, where the temperature rarely dips below freezing. I came across this survey about the most popular season by state. Spring is the runaway winner. https://www.brecks.com/blogs/blog-post/popular-season-in-every-state?srsltid=AfmBOor3WtfLSj9HsC4-lty3iuD6MDyuCUws9M0hsxmri0M800-8_20m

  26. Our 4th was great fun on the lake with family and friends. At the beginning of a season, my favorite is whatever season we just started. Nearing the end of that season I am ready to be done with it, so my favorite is the next season on deck. See, I can’t really choose. If I was stranded on a desert island with a limited supply of seasonings, I would need salt, ginger, oregano, and cumin. Everything would be fine, if I had those in hand.
