Last week, we paid off my car. Two months early even – which hardly seems worth it, but the allure of an extra $325/month in discretionary income was impossible for Tara to resist. “Don’t care how, I want it now!” she declared, all Veruca Salt-like, and shifted some funds around to make it happen.

The next day, I scheduled an appointment for new tires, which will set us back $750. I guess that gratification will be delayed a little bit longer.

Adulting is hard, guys.

Before the proverbial ink had even dried on the proverbial check, I told Tara, “Great! I’ll start shopping for a new car right away!”

Tara was not amused.

I was kidding, of course, though my track record would indicate otherwise. The Kona – my current ride – is the eighth car I’ve owned in my life. Only once did I pay off a car and then not turn around and immediately buy another. Weirdly enough, that was also a Hyundai; I drove my Santa Fe for 13 years, and she was paid off for eight of them. But more often than not, I’ve always wanted something bigger, or sportier, or not black, or able to tackle snow-covered roads more ably, or or or [insert excuse].

Would I love a 2025 Volkswagen ID. Buzz electric bus? Why, yes. Of course. But that baby’s got a $70,000 base price, which is absolutely bonkers. Turns out I like not having a monthly car payment and keeping a roof over my head, food on the table, yadda yadda a lot more than driving a modern-day hippie van.

Besides, we’ve got a camping trailer to buy! (Someday, not tomorrow or next year, but Tara has warmed up to the idea.)

Tall Grass Therapy

Exactly five weeks since he was hauled away for repairs, my buddy is back!

I actually rearranged my work schedule to see him take delivery, as Tuesday – the one day of the week Tara and I both go into the office – was the best day they could deliver JD. The diagnosis? A bent blade, as we suspected. And a busted spindle, which was about four times the cost of the blade. All because I ran over a sawed-off piece of metal from a long-demolished dog run Dick had.

Much like our frozen koi, this was another costly mistake.

This wicked piece of metal cost me $410.

Neighbor Brian had offered to cut our grass again, but I told him he’s actually mowed our lawn more than I have this year, and I was eager to get back out there. Truly: cutting the grass on a riding mower is therapeutic…and not only that, fun! Aside from one weekend around my birthday, I hadn’t been on the John Deere since last October.

Guess I really took that whole No Mow May thing to heart.

Did I mention Tuesday was brutally hot? Summer has arrived with a vengeance. Not only did the temperature hit 92° but the dew point was in the low 70s. With the humidity, the feels-like temp was over 100°. It’s been a cool spring so I shouldn’t complain too loudly, but I’m a-gonna whine a little anyway.

/whining.

OK, I’m good. Despite the heat and humidity, I hopped on JD right after clocking out. Turned the key in the ignition, and I swear, he purred. The next hour was bliss, save for one touch-and-go moment 15 minutes in when JD suddenly sputtered and died. I panicked for a few seconds before remembering I hadn’t given him any gas.

Whew.

Check out all the ferns and peonies in one corner of our property. I swear, our backyard looks like a jungle!

Two+ years later and I still can’t believe how lucky we are to have landed this place.

It’ll be a hot time in Wisconsin!

So, my brother and SIL are coming for a visit on Thursday (four nights, leaving Monday morning, they get me). This will be their first time in Wisconsin, and actually, I haven’t seen Scott and Esther in something like eight years. Crazy, huh? There was a Rapid City visit planned in 2020, but COVID happened, and then we were busy moving. They were going to come out for our family reunion in 2023, but decided it would be more fun to just visit on their own.

I just think they didn’t want to sleep on the basement floor, and honestly, I don’t blame ’em.

Unfortunately, the weather forecast for their visit couldn’t look any worse (unless you’re a weirdo who loves 90s and humidity). I texted Scott a couple of nights ago, apologizing in advance, which is silly because it’s not like I can do anything about the weather. Where is The Dark Cloud when you need him?! Scott and Esther love Hawaii, so I told him, Just pretend you’re on Kauai.

Scott just asked if we had A/C and assured me they would be fine. And yeah, it’ll be a great visit regardless, but we may not get to hang out on the deck or really anywhere outside as much as we’d planned.

Neighbor Brian suggested a brewery tour. Maybe the historic Miller beer caves in Milwaukee. There’s always House on the Rock, too.

“Just go bar-hopping,” my friend Ashley said, and maybe that’s the best solution of all.

  1. Let winter pictures be on laptop screen saver when summer arrives next week! Owning a car is like owning an elephant and same goes with a house! Never ending expenditure 🙂! Happy Summer.

  2. Kauai! I’ve been there. It’s my favorite Hawaiian Island, if I had to pick a favorite. [Sorry Maui.]

I’m glad you paid off your car— early even. That’s a good thing. Z-D bought a new SUV last year and the high price of vehicles is amazing. I’d like one of those VW buses but no can do.

I love the you love where you landed in this house and property, even if your lawn mower machine is not inclined to work. It’s a beautiful place.

    1. Having spent much of my youth on various Hawaiian islands, I’m going with the Big Island, hands down. Sadly, Kilauea never once erupted when I was there. Now, it can’t go more than a few days at a time without spewing lava. Story of my life!

  3. Your ferns and peonies look vaguely Hawaiian, so if you drink enough… Kauai should be an easy sell.
Glad you got your mower back. I know my husband is beside himself when he can’t hop on his at will.
I’m sure you’ll have a great visit with family, hot weather aside. We’re due the that nasty crap next week and I’m already longing for autumn…

I am looking forward to that first snowfall already, even though it’s many months away.

  4. Congrats on full ownership of the Kona! I suspect I mentally couldn’t begin to comprehend a new car payment since it’s been so long since I’ve had one. I’m glad that you’re glad to have JD back in the fold and working well. I’m sure he missed you horribly…

    1. I learned from my last experience that having no car payment is so nice, you want to hang onto that as long as you can. I would’ve kept my Santa Fe even longer, but she was on the verge of breaking down for good, so I went for the upgrade reluctantly.

  5. So much wisdom in this post Mark: “Adulting is hard.” And this gem: “Just go bar-hopping.” Wise, wise words. I feel so much smarter. I’m ready to face anything now. Ha, ha. I did have to laugh about adulting. I went in for an oil change the other day, and bam, I walked out $500 poorer. Ugh. I even joked with my mechanic that I want to be a kid again without the adult responsibilities. And you’re right, the base price on cars nowadays is out of this world. Hopefully the heat isn’t too bad.

    1. Holy cow, you walked away from an oil change with your wallet $500 emptier? What did they do, sell you a portion of the shop too?!

I think to fully appreciate all that wisdom, you need to combine those lines. “Adulting is hard: just go bar-hopping.” A couple of drinks tends to make adulting a little easier.

  6. We have a motto: If you have to make payments, you don’t need it.

I know that is not possible for everyone, but we haven’t had a car payment in almost twenty years.

Those peonies are gorgeous!! Glad the JD is back in action.

    1. I love your motto, but does that also include houses?! Because, short of winning the lottery, ain’t no way we aren’t making decades worth of payments to keep a roof over our heads!

The upside of being a business owner/entrepreneur is that with enough hard word, determination and never taking the easy road, the reward can be really high too! 😉

  9. Yes, those ferns with the peonies screams Hawaii. Gorgeous! The Real Housewives of SLC did an episode where they visited the Miller Beer Caves in Milwaukee, so that’s how I know of them and that would get my vote, even though I no longer even drink beer. But I’d make an exception! Have fun with your brother and SIL!

  10. I’ve lost a couple cars due to accidents (mostly not my fault), but the most recent ones I had for at least a decade, if not two. New cars are really expensive and rarely make financial sense, but Los Angeles is all about getting that new car model. I can’t get over how people out here will buy a new model before even paying off the old one, or lease rather than buy. Even if they don’t need a bigger model for kids, snow, whatever. It’s part of the car culture, especially in the entertainment industry. And don’t get me started on how many give their kids brand new cars! Might as well just be driving that BMW into the ocean.

    1. One of my eight cars was leased, but only out of desperation. Never again. Walking away five years later with not a penny…err, nickel…in equity just felt wrong.

Tara, at least, is good about buying used. I always gravitate toward new vehicles. Or did, until prices shot through the roof.

      1. My friend JM used to sell cars. She was always screaming about the idiocy of leasing. Although some non-US manufacturers like Volvo are now offering a leasing option on electric cars that saves you thousands of dollars as opposed to buying it outright. The lessee can then buy the car after 3 months without a penalty in order to skirt tariffs and compete with the rebates on electric cars. But that might also be desperation. Apparently hardly anyone is selling cars right now–dealerships that used to move a hundred cars a month are lucky to sell 10.

  11. I am still tooling around in our 2010 Hyundai Elantra with 252,000 miles. Is it rickety? Am I sort of scared to have it do more than 62? Sure, but isn’t that part of the charm? We paid off our “new” car last year. I keep saying we need to replace the Elantra because whoever is driving it is limited to non-interstates and that might be a problem in the near future with sick relatives and things like that. But car shopping seems challenging right now, so just like the bathroom remodel, it keeps getting back-burnered. Maybe someday in 2026?

    1. That’s impressive! I swear, there’s a lot to be said for Hyundais. It’s why I went back to them after a brief Mazda detour (not that the Mazda was bad either; it just didn’t have the AWD I needed after leaving the PNW behind).

Our bathroom could use a remodel too, but yeah…that’s a future project.

Yes on the travel trailer! I really want one of those too. (Like my parents. Did you get Tails from the RV Trail yet?)

No Tails from the RV Trail yet. As for Hawaiian cheese, all their dairy is imported, so no: they do not have a burgeoning cheese scene like we do here.

  23. I tend to drive my cars until they die and – one car aside – I’ve always bought second-hand and paid up front in full. I know I’m unusual in that I view a car as purely a tool and not as part of my image. Even my mid-life crisis car was a sensible purchase in financial terms! That’s not to say if someone died and left me loads of money that I couldn’t have my head turned, but as there’s been zero chance of that happening in my life, I got used to cutting my cloth.

Himself is the same… except I suspect he could easily have his head turned by a small tractor. Of course we’d need to have a piece of land on which to keep it – I suspect he’s quietly planning and working towards that very future 😉 Glad you have your JD back.
