Today got off to a wild start.

Now that it’s getting warmer, I’ve been walking outside again in the mornings. This might put a crimp on my reading pace, but the fresh air and colorful sunrises are a lot more stimulating than walking in place on the treadmill like some common hamster. Here was today’s:

It didn’t last long though. I always check the weather before heading out the door, and the radar showed a line of strong thunderstorms to the west, heading our way. I got all math-y, calculated their speed and movement, and figured I’d be able to finish my walk before they moved in. But I decided to stick close to home just in case. When thunder roars, go indoors, and all that jazz.

The clouds were gathering and the sky was looking pretty ominous. Flickers of lightning danced across the horizon, accompanied by distant rumbling thunder. Before I even got back home, I started getting all kinds of alerts on my phone. The situation, as they say, was escalating.

When an emergency alert warned of “supercells” and “baseball sized hail” I got a little nervous, especially since Tara had just left for work. Luckily, the largest hail missed us by a few miles, but they weren’t joking about the threat.

That is some Black Hills-level hail there! It rivals our July 2020 Rapid City hailstorm. Honestly, I didn’t think I had to worry about giant hailstones in Wisconsin. Tara and I were visiting a couple of months before moving and struck up a conversation with a couple at a bar. We specifically asked them if hail was a concern out here, and they assured us that hail was rare, and when it did fall, it was tiny.

They lied.

Thankfully, that is neither my hand nor my hail in the above photo. Here’s what we got:

I guess we dodged a bullet there! Our hail, while still impressive, kinda paled in comparison. That didn’t stop a bunch of vultures roofing repair companies from going door to door through the ‘hood, dropping off flyers.

As if this wasn’t enough excitement for a Friday morning, just as the storm was rolling in, I was busily preparing a BBQ pork shoulder roast for the Traeger. Figured since I was working from home today, it would be a great opportunity to smoke meat for the first time this season. The Traeger is set up on the patio beneath our deck, so I didn’t get too wet. Had it cooking minutes before the hail arrived, so: good timing.

Still, it’s uncanny how it always seems to rain whenever I decide to smoke something. I guess the next time we’re suffering from drought conditions, I should buy a brisket.

A few weeks ago, I was driving through town on my way home and came to a red light next to a senior living facility. I glanced up and saw, through an open window, Michael Scott’s face in high-definition on someone’s TV. Suddenly, a wave of nostalgia washed over me. God, how I loved The Office; it’s one of my all-time favorite sitcoms, but I hadn’t seen it in years. That evening, I vowed to rewatch the entire series from the start.

Best of all? Shockingly (and borderline inexcusably), Tara has never watched The Office. She’s not completely in the dark when it comes to the Dunder-Mifflin gang; she’s seen bits and pieces here and there, and we both frequently toss out a well-timed “That’s what she said!” whenever (in)appropriate. But this is the first time she’s watching the whole series. In a way, I envy her; can you imagine having nine seasons’ worth of new-to-you Jim and Dwight shenanigans to look forward to?! And sure, the quality dipped once Steve Carell left, but even the weakest episodes of The Office are better than 90% of anything else on TV.

How deep was my obsession? When I joined a dating site after my divorce, my profile included the following gem:

We could also be compatible if you think Jim and Pam from “The Office” are the World’s Perfect Couple.  Alternatively, owning a Dwight Schrute bobblehead doll will win you major points.  Or just knowing that Kevin leads a Police cover band called Scrantonicity. Because in a universe where reality television rules, this sitcom is like a beacon of hope. Not that there’s anything wrong with reality TV. It’s just that, if I hear Jeff Probst utter the words “wanna know what you’re playing for?” one more time, I just might scream.

Oh, and I own a Pam Beesly bobblehead doll. That’s not creepy or anything, right? (Maybe don’t answer that.)

I know what you’re thinking: it’s a wonder I was single for as long as I was! I know, guys. I can’t believe it either.

In any case, we’re midway through Season 2, and I’m happy to say the humor holds up well – even Michael Scott’s cringiest moments. I find myself laughing out loud often – and it’s fascinating to see the evolution of each character with fresh eyes.

Thank you, random old person with an open window, for reminding me how much I love this show.

  1. Hail IS sort of cool. Ok, don’t hate me, but I think The Office is the most overrated show ever. Maybe because I find the characters so unlikeable? I just don’t find it amusing at all. I know I’m alone!

    1. I’M COVERING MY EYES HERE.

My brother never got into The Office either, but he also never worked in an office. I wonder if you appreciate the show more if you’ve had that experience, because it is very true to corporate life.

      Regardless, it’s so funny!

  2. Hail is a show in and of itself. The dubious roofing companies that come after a big hail storm are a little less, shall we say, sincere as Mother Nature. Never watched much of The Office. Ditto what Bijoux said.

    1. Y’all are killing me here.

Hail damage companies made a killing in Rapid City. There were billboards all over the place; the hail there is so bad, there’s damage to cars and houses every year. If I were going to open a business like that, it would be in the Black Hills for sure.

Hail is such a bizarre weather phenomenon. Always makes me wonder how the birds duck it and what they think…

    1. It’s like I’ve stepped into some bizarre parallel universe here. My first four commenters have either never seen The Office or aren’t fans. So weird. I’m curious what TV shows you were watching 15, 20 years ago.

I’ve never actually thought about what birds do when it’s hailing. Hmm…!

    That’s what SHE said!

So, how is Tara enjoying The Office?

    1. Ultimately, after the very cringy six-episode first season, they made Michael Scott’s character a lot more appealing. By the end of the series, he’s downright lovable. I think that was a smart move.

And Tara is loving it! She’s laughing just as hard as me.

  7. hail yes! the office is one of my all time favorite shows and I could watch it over and over forever! remember when Michale organized the run to raise money for rabies? he is my fave character because of his facial expressions and just everything he does is so cringey. did you ever see the british office? It is a riot as well. and the final episode, a bonus, where they have their christmas party, and they are dancing is unbelievable.

    1. Thank you, Beth! Finally a diehard fan like me! Yes, the rabies fun run is fantastic. There are so many classics. We just recently watched Booze Cruise, which also ranks way up there.

I did watch the British version of The Office, and yes, that was great too! And I love how Ricky Gervais shows up in a late season of the U.S. version, chatting it up with Michael Scott. How very meta.

I’ve watched The Office since the beginning. It’s only very very recently that I stopped finding it rerunning on any broadcast channels.

That hail is INSANE! My friend in Prescott AZ msg’d that a snowstorm just hit there. And here I am, complaining cause it only reached 62° today.

    1. Actually, it was a Christmas gift from my aunt. She’s just as big a fan as I am! I think it’s pretty much only on Peacock now, but luckily, we signed up because that’s also where we can catch Top Chef.

Snow in Arizona? This time of year? That’s crazy!

  9. Wasn’t there a British version of the office? If so which one came first? I was thinking back to the characters while reading this post and got Angela stuck in my head for awhile and then Phyllis…poor Phyllis with her near death by car experience. I’ve always thought Jim and Pam should be a real life couple.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yes, the British version came first. It’s good too, but David Brent (Ricky Gervais) is nowhere near as likable as Michael Scott. The U.S. version is far superior.

Jim and Pam’s budding romance is such a great thing!

      2. THAT explains everything, ha. I only watched the first two episodes when it came out and then gave it up. I thought Michael Scott was too mean-spirited. It wasn’t until a coworker started raving about it in S2 that I decided to give it another chance. The producers softened Michael Scott considerably after the first season, making him more professional and likable. He still has a lot to learn about standard workplace behavior but he’s not nearly as detestable. And there are some real heartwarming storylines moving forward, plus nonstop hilarity. It really is a great show!

  17. Holy hail!

I’ve never watched The Office, but I’ve seen snippets. I have seen the movie Office Space and really enjoyed it.

Mike and I always say we want to start The Office. There are a lot of sitcoms we missed the first time around that we’d like to get into. Lost is another one. So maybe this is our sign to finally start watching The Office.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. People who like Office Space (me included!) generally like The Office. If you’re torn between the two, let me say this: I was a huge Lost fan. I literally set my schedule around that show, and the next day, a group of us at work would talk about the latest episode, dissecting and theorizing, because that’s what Lost demanded. BUT: the way they ended the show was a disaster. This is a pretty universal take. I won’t go into the whys of it all, but after committing so much time to it, I feel like the producers/directors/writers really let me down.

I don’t feel that way at all about The Office. It’s not perfect; the first season (six episodes) is funny, but Michael Scott is pretty unlikable. They softened his character for season 2 and from that moment on, it’s so much better. The humor is consistent, and every member of the talented supporting cast is well-developed and has a chance to shine.

I guess it’s clear which show I’d recommend you watch! 🙂

    1. I am actually shocked by the number of people who have not seen The Office. I figured it was a cultural touchstone that everyone had seen! Unlike Moonlighting (though I was a fan of that, too…at least until they hooked up; without the sexual tension, that show didn’t know what to do with itself).

  21. I’m Midwestern enough that I don’t check the weather before I leave the house. If it rains, I’ll get wet. If it snows, I’ll get wet. If it’s too hot, I’ll take off a layer. But I cut it close on Friday morning. Ten minutes in and the weather alert went off. I’m not sure exactly what I would have done if it had started to hail while the dog and I were out for a walk. 22. That is some seriously serious hail. Is it me or is hail – the proper big stuff – a more frequent feature in our weather these days? Is it something to do with global warming?

I’ve never watched The Office. I really dislike Ricky Gervais who starred in the original UK version, so avoided it. Maybe I should try the US version instead…

    1. Climate change is leading to more severe weather of all types, including hail. There was one 75 y/o resident of Evansville, which was hit the hardest, saying he’d never seen hail even remotely as big as before, so the anecdotal evidence at least is there.

Ricky Gervais’s character in the British version is extremely unlikable, but then again, that’s his real personality, if you’ve ever watched any of his comedy specials. I do enjoy some of his movies, particularly The Invention of Lying.

You failed to mention how she liked/didn’t like it. We recently finished our, I think, 3rd? round of Parks and Rec. We’ll get to our third (4th?) of The Office again someday too, I’m sure. Back to the profile, I have a single friend who asserts that sitcoms are his love language. Wonder why he’s single. I kid. 🙂
