Last Friday, when I mentioned my weekend grocery plans, A Grace Full Life commented, Sending you and Tara well wishes as you head to Woodman’s on the Saturday before the Super Bowl!

I really wish I’d seen that comment before we left the house the next morning, because Woodman’s was an absolute zoo. To be fair, unless you go during an off-peak time, it’s always busy. But add in the Super Bowl – the biggest snacking event of the year – and it’s even worse. At one point I waited several minutes to make a left turn out of the coffee aisle, unable to merge my cart into the endless parade of shoppers flowing by. I’ve encountered less traffic on the Beltline following a snowstorm.

But eventually we got ‘er done and headed back home. Other than a few flurries, our predicted snow never materialized, so I spent the afternoon splitting logs. Our wood pile had diminished quite a bit thanks to the cold weather, and with more on the way through at least the next week, I wanted to make sure we had enough fuel to keep our wood stove fed. I’ve gotten pretty good at splitting wood, but these logs were extra challenging because they were solidly frozen to the ground, and no amount of shoving, prying, or kicking was working them loose. At one point I grabbed a shovel to dig ’em out, but that proved equally useless. What part of frozen to the ground didn’t I understand?! I finally just whacked them with the back of the splitting maul. That did the trick.

I’m still sore, two days later.

Sunday was the Super Bowl, and can I just say, hallelujah! I’m not an Eagles fan, but I was “Go Birds!”ing with all the enthusiasm of a native Philadelphian given that the Chiefs have been a thorn in my Broncos’ side for years. I generally don’t like blowouts, but when the team you despise is on the losing end of the lopsided score, they go down a lot more smoothly. Well done, Philly! You proved the mighty Mahomes is mortal after all. Way to expose Kansas City’s weaknesses.

And how ’bout that halftime show? I’m no fan of the music, but major props to Kendrick Lamar for staging a huge protest in front of the biggest global audience of the year. What a powerful message, and it probably went over the heads of a lot of people.

I hope the Fascist-Dictator-in-Chief was squirming in his seat the whole time.

Remember my post-snow driveway art? Turns out the floor of the garage (the one with that wacky center pole) also functions as a canvas. Check this out:

If you don’t live in a snowy climate, this might perplex you. When a storm is forecast, maintenance crews salt the roads to provide traction. Great for preventing spinouts, but the stuff builds up on your car (and can eventually eat its way through metal if you don’t wash it off in a timely manner). After backing into the garage, some of the salt I’d tracked in formed these crystal patterns.

Isn’t science neat?

Science might be getting a lot neater if the forecast for Wednesday holds…

  1. I didn’t watch the game or the halftime, and now I’ve got to find it on YouTube. Good job with the ax and maul work! Maul, is that right?

    1. well, you survived Super Bowl shopping and chopping and frosty art and even the game! loved the half time and heard the orange one left at halftime, but I thought it was brilliant protest art . I was all in for Philly and happy they delivered

    2. Yep, maul. As opposed to mall (food court, Hot Topic). Also opposed to maul, as in, what a bear might do to you!

    1. Wasn’t it fantastic to learn that the Chiefs have actual vulnerabilities other teams can exploit? It’s about time someone figured out how to beat them!

  3. Your wood mauling skills remind me that I’m done with winter. We have at least two, maybe three, snowstorms coming this week … and I’m already in my Grumpy Old Man stage of winter. When’s summer? Ha ha! Stay warm!

    1. That’s crazy, Brian. You guys have pretty much gotten the shaft the past few winters, right?

  4. Wow…your “garage art” is impressive! And yes…that same round of show that you’re eyeing for Wednesday seems to have us in the target, too. Sigh. Good that you’ve got plenty of wood chopped and ready…and that you survived the lines at Woodman’s…what the heck? The Woodman’s around here is always empty-ish. Go figure. Loved your musings about the half-time show and Kendrick Lamar…Paul and I were thinking the same thing. A powerful message, for sure.

    1. Empty Woodman’s? I wish! Maybe you guys just have a lot more choices than we do. Enjoy your snow! We are way overdue, so fingers crossed this one hits us square on.

  6. I didn’t watch the Superb Owl, so I’ll have to google that halftime show. We are within spitting distance of two days off school this week (due to cold, not snow), but I think we’re going to come up short.

    1. What is the threshold for closing school? Extreme cold wind chills? (We’re going to drop below zero again this week…kinda hard to believe, now that we’re getting well into February.) Stay warm!

  7. That must be one special grocery store.
I too was glad the birds flew victorious, though I admit most of the half time show was over my head. I got the gist, but admit I’ve reached the age where I couldn’t make out most of the words of the songs.

    1. Woodman’s is great. Maybe TOO great…

I didn’t catch a lot of the words either, being completely unfamiliar with the music. But I know he just cleaned up at the Grammys, setting all kinds of records in the process.

  8. I’m not good at keeping track of “stay out of the store” days. Another one is coming up, VDay! It is often packed with people buying candy and flowers for their sweeties. I didn’t watch the Super Bowl but was rooting for the Eagles since KC is too Trumpy for me. Harrison Butker, barf! I also didn’t want to get upset at the sight of other undesirable people. However, I did watch A Superbowl, the 2014 one (on DVD) between the Seahawks and the Broncos. My team always wins big in that one! 😉

    1. OMG, you are dredging up very bad memories for me with that mention of the 2014 Super Bowl. Tara and I had our neighbors over for the game and we were all pulling for Denver big time. That was a very disappointing game for all of us! (Winning the whole thing two years later did help lessen the sting a bit.)

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Yeah, sorry about that, but it was a delightful game for us to watch in the greater Seattle area. We were huge underdogs which made it even sweeter.

  9. So the Eagles won and Kendrick Lamar was awesome? Just absorbing this news down in the Southern Hemisphere…
    I’ve never seen a Superbowl because 1. it’s on Mondays here (work) and 2. I don’t have Cable/Foxtel but I think I need to check YouTube for Kendrick’s half-time show 👍🙏💪

  12. No game, no Kendrick, no snacks, and only a brief news reel showing a pro Palestine flag runner photo bombing halftime until they were tackled by what looked like Secret Service agents and hauled off. I was enjoying in person time with my oldest, talking nonstop the entire day. I think I’m biased for sure but my kids are amazing people.

  14. I’m bringing my computer home every night this week in case of snow. I am willing a GIANT SNOWFALL so I can stay inside my house and desultorily point out how the driveway needs to be shoveled and then, once all the shoveling has been done, I will take my dog out and let her loose around the neighborhood to run around like an absolute lunatic.

I go to the Woodman’s in Janesville. We generally go at less busy times (read: Monday after dinner), but I am PEEVED. They recently have decreased the number of self-checks to ONE with a belt and the other self-checks are those tiny ones that are only appropriate if you are buying grapes and eggs. And when we are there, it’s unusual to have more than two lanes open with actual cashiers. All this boils down to us taking LONGER TO CHECK OUT THAN WE SPENT SHOPPING. Yes, ALL CAPS. I am PISSED. We have a system of checking out with self-check down to a science and now we just stand around waiting. I HATE IT. Whew. Thanks for letting me hijack your comments.

    1. Knowing your dog, she’ll be begging to go for a walk right in the middle of the heaviest falling snow.

We go to the Janesville Woodman’s, too. I hadn’t realized they’d cut back on the number of self-scan aisles. When we were leaving on Saturday, we saw one lady running an overflowing cart of items though there. She must have had 100 different things stacked up. I don’t mind scanning a dozen or so, but I would never have the patience for that!

Somehow, I always wind up in the grocery store right before a big holiday, but fortunately, I bucked that trend last weekend. Go, me!

  16. My spidey senses are telling me that there’s not going to be any significant snowfall here, even if the weather forecasters say differently. I wonder who’ll be at the grocery when I shop there this afternoon, the usual or panicky ones.

I doubt that The Donald stayed for the Super Bowl Halftime show. Once he’d been seen I imagine he went home. I don’t think sports are of interest to him. And I’m sure Kendrick Lamar wouldn’t be on his radar.

    1. I haven’t come across many panicky shoppers around here…at least compared to Portland, where the slightest possibility of so much as an inch of snow sends them scurrying to the store to stock up on kale.

  21. I too unexpectedly found myself in a very long, slow line recently. And it was about the furthest thing from a nightclub or Disneyland ride you could think of. Are you familiar with Bob’s Red Mill? (Vendor for flour, etc.) Perhaps you know the factory is in Milwaukee (the Oregon version) near Clackamas. And maybe you even know about the retail outlet/restaurant out that direction? We’ve been going there for years, for lunch and to get fixings for making gluten-free flour from the bulk bins.

Well, Bob’s suddenly announced they were closing the outlet and restaurant, and had a 50% off liquidation sale. All the old (and I mean old, most of the outlet customers are retirees) customers descended at once. It took us about an hour to get in the door.

    Take that, Woodmans!

And since I’m still annoyed they’re closing, I’ll leave the salty comments to the others.

    1. As a matter of fact, Dave, I still follow The Oregonian, and saw the story they posted about Bob’s Red Mill closing. There was even a photo of the long line waiting to get in, so I know exactlyl what you had to deal with. I used to drive by the outlet regularly but never stopped in. We do buy their products though. It’s always a shame when longstanding traditions come to an end.

  24. The Portland area is expecting an ice/snow storm tonight into tomorrow night and you will not catch me at the store stocking up on supplies. No thank you. The panic people in Portland feel when there’s a storm is insane and I am not about to experience that chaos. Fingers crossed I don’t regret that decision should something real happen.
I was happy to see the Eagles win too and enjoyed the Kendrick show. I worry our evil dictator wasn’t smart enough to even connect any dots of that intelligent performance.

    1. I lived there long enough to know how crazy the grocery store gets whenever a big storm is predicted. Hope for your sake it’s more snow than ice; that stuff really wreaks havoc!
