I’ve always embraced change and love a good adventure, but that doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate certain routines.

Weekday evenings especially. After work, I like to settle onto my recliner, kick my feet up, and turn on the TV. There’s usually a cat or two on my lap. Around 9:00 I trade the living room for the bedroom, where I read until I begin nodding off. Sometimes I make it to 10:00; other times, 9:05. The point is: that’s my routine, and I’m perfectly happy with it.

So, when Tara suggested Thursday night trivia at Mr. Brew’s, I hesitated for a few seconds. But it had been months since we’d gone, and we always have a good time, so I was down. Besides, with the current awful state of the country, I needed an escape more than ever.

We went last night…and sure enough, it was a blast. How could it not be, with cheese curds and beer? I’m generally not a fan of pink foods, but the cranberry walnut salad with grilled chicken, bleu cheese crumbles, french fried onions, and a freshly prepared creamy cranberry aioli dressing was delicious. And my Third Space FROG Weiss (Fig, Raspberry, Orange, Ginger) kettled sour toad-ally hit the spot.

Our team (Booze Clues) finished in 5th place – outside of the prize brackets, but considering most of the other teams had 6-8 people, I’m proud of the two of us. Other than a disastrous first round, when Tara guessed “the domestic goddess who was convicted of a felony and served prison time for insider trading and obstruction of justice” was Roseanne Barr. Literally the moment she handed in the slip of paper with her answer, she realized it was actually Martha Stewart, but there are no take-backs in trivia. The host then turned Roseanne into a running joke the rest of the night, but Tara was a good sport about it.

(We made up for it in round two, earning 23 out of 23 possible points.)

What I’m saying is, as much as I enjoy my regular routine, stepping out of my comfort zone and mixing things up on occasion is always a positive experience. Which is apparently the theme this week: I shared a much more terrifying experience (public speaking!) in How Sweet the Landing, my latest guest post on The Heart of the Matter blog.

And for the companion podcast – Episode #101, Out of Our Comfort Zone – we threw out all the rules (including the script!) and just cut loose. It turned out to be my favorite appearance yet…and that’s saying a lot, because I’ve racked up quite a few now. I’ve always wanted to host a podcast, so being a regular guest is a great way to scratch that itch. It’s definitely less work on my part.

We recorded this on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, having no idea where our conversation would lead us. Maybe it’s coincidental that, on such a bitterly cold day – even for the non-Midwesterner – we spoke of slow-cooked meals and heated blankets, among other things. Kind of like a fireside chat minus the fire. Feel free to give it a listen if you’d like.

What’s your usual weeknight routine? Do you enjoy trivia?

  2. A few years back we had a regular Tuesday night trivia team at Pedro O’Haras. (Mexican Irish fusion… what could go wrong?) They made a mean tarantula margarita and we never won (it was a college town and those Little Ivies knew everything!) but we had fun. Sadly the restaurant closed and with it our team went poof.
    😥
I like the sound of that weird beer.

    1. I thought a FROG sour sounded odd, but a tarantula margarita? What’s that??

      1. You’ve never tried Tarantula?

I love it. The tarantula margarita is made with that plus apple pucker.

      2. Oh, it’s a brand! Gotcha. I honestly thought, if they can put a worm in a tequila, I guess a spider isn’t too far-fetched…

  4. I used to enjoy doing team trivia but got out of the habit around 2020; I wonder why. 😉 I’ve never gotten back to it, especially since that time my daughters have had kids, so it would be tough to get the group together. We used to bowl a lot too with friends but now between age, shoulder issues and getting a lane (leagues take over), it doesn’t seem worth the hassle. My evening routine is lap cat, some TV or reading and a bowl of pretzels. Wild times!

    1. What kind of pretzels? I’m partial to Dot’s myself.

      1. I don’t even know the brand, but I buy the tiny twists. Butter pretzels of some sort. The cheddar cheese coated pretzels were dangerous for me; I could easily eat that whole bag!

  5. I’ve only participated in trivia night a few times, but watched a lot. I once teamed up with a couple other women and our knowledge really complemented each others, so we won.

The food all sounds amazing but that salad dressing color is extremely unfortunate!

    1. We were very impressed that they make it from scratch. Our server was explaining the process, how it’s very time-consuming but they insist on fresh ingredients, yadda yadda. It may have looked technicolor but it tasted really good!

  6. Funny that Rosanne Barr became a running joke for the night. Good on Tara for being a good sport and allowing others to have a little added fun at her expense. And good on her for suggesting the outing! Fifth place for the two of you is impressive. Yum food, too.

    1. Our best outing was second place but we haven’t finished in the top three since. Not that we do this often – just a few times a year.

  7. Our local pub started trivia a few weeks ago. This is my first foray into public trivia, and I love it! We laugh so much. Our emcee is a doll. We turn our answers in, but as long as there is time on the clock, he’ll let us take it back. We’ve already taken back a correct answer and submitted a wrong one.

Glad you had fun! It sounds like you and Tara had a great night out. The food looks delicious.

I started to listen to the podcast. You jest that it was a terrifying experience (public speaking). You sound so relaxed and natural. I caught your story of how you decided to move to the Midwest. Very nice. I’ll listen to the rest later.

    1. Exchanging a correct answer for a wrong one had me laughing out loud. Totally something we would do. In fact, we probably have done it once or twice (before turning in our answer).

I’m glad you enjoyed the podcast!

  10. I love trivia, but since it’s only ever held on weeknights around here . . . 🤓

My after dinner routine is doing a walking video or actually taking a walk in good weather, shower, an hour of TikTok, an hour of TV from video on demand so I can ffw through commercials, then night night.

    1. Ha! You could try it once. I totally get your hesitancy though!

I’m a morning walker. For some reason, I just hit a wall most evenings. Getting out early sets me up mentally for my day.

  11. I love trivia, too, but I haven’t done it in ages. Like you, I’m usually in bed by 9 PM whenever possible, and before that…it’s been pets and child activities. So much soccer. So much driving. I don’t even know if there’s a trivia night near us, but now I might be compelled to find out and drag Andy out.

    1. You should look into it! If Rapid City and lil’ ol’ Fort Atkinson have trivia, I’m sure there must be a few places near you.

Next time, we want to play Bingo. There’s a place in town that hosts that on Thursday nights (and an hour earlier than trivia, which is nice).

      1. Usually the Catholic churches have a lock on Bingo (at least they did when I lived in the south). But Trivia feels more interactive!

      2. Tara’s a big Bingo buff. It’s definitely more luck than skill. We went a few times in Rapid City…I think pubs have replaced Catholic churches when it comes to Bingo, at least in the Midwest!

  13. Just last night my brother-in-law FaceTimed us and we ended up playing two rounds of trivia together via a 20-questions trivia podcast he’s become a fan of. It was fun and shows the remarkable positive side of modern technology – that we can play trivia in real time with people in England. What a wild and wacky world in which we live. We think it will be a semi-regular thing, which means we must keep up OUR weeknight routine of watching Jeopardy every day after school at 4:30. Like trivia, some days I’m on and somedays I’m a nightmare, but it’s fun to play and I learn a lot.
I’ve got your podcast episode all cued up and I’m going to listen to it on the drive to the gym this morning!

    1. Once upon a time, Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy were part of my regular routine – but I haven’t watched them in ages. I also used to record Judge Judy, The Price is Right, and Let’s Make a Deal. Don’t watch them anymore either. Interesting how routines evolve over time.

I hope you enjoy the podcast!

      1. I did! You ate at the same table as Hilary Swank? How very Swank-y!
Your crockpot talk made me think of the Thermomix countertop appliance that my brother-in-law can’t stop talking about. Seems very futuristic. It’s, I dunno, 50x the price of a crockpot, but it can do a bit more. 🙂

      2. Hilary was there with her dad and other family members. Not seated directly next to us, sadly. But it was still a pretty cool experience.

Unless that Thermonix also washes the dishes and cleans up the kitchen, I’m sticking with my simple but trusty crockpot!

  15. Love trivia. My weeknight routine is pretty much dinner and tv. One night a week my husband and I usually go out to dinner. Twice a month I have evening book club. Occasionally theater or something like that. But I’m a moron ng person so evenings are lost on me

We started a new routine in Rapid City to go out to dinner every Thursday, but that hasn’t carried over here. Gets to be expensive after awhile!

  16. While Ilsa and River are bickering about being normal and first and all that kind of rot, I’m here proudly saying I am quirky and most probably your last commenter on this post. Somehow that seems to be routine for me, no disrespect intended. As for trivia, I haven’t been to bar game in years, but doing crossword puzzles seems to be it’s own kind of trivia.

    1. LOL! I appreciate last commenters (you aren’t, actually) just as much as first commenters. What I really want to know is how many lurkers are out there.

Crossword puzzles IMHO are much more difficult than trivia.

  17. Roseanne Barr as a domestic goddess!! LOLOLOL. You know what? Maybe she was.

I get home from work, walk the dog, workout, make dinner, eat dinner, and then I have a free hour. What do I do during that hour? Sometimes I work on my blog, sometimes I watch a television show with my husband, and sometimes I clean toilets. And then I walk the dog again and start getting ready for bed. That’s it.

If I have to do ANYTHING ELSE, I get really snotty about it.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Apparently, the confusion stems from the fact that Roseanne referred to herself as a “domestic goddess” during an early standup special. I can’t think of anything being further from the truth! Made for a funny running gag if nothing else. 🙂

  19. I never used to be a person with a routine but, since living with Himself, I appear to be routine heavy. I’d love to change it up but with Himself’s work schedule being so changeable and never with any notice, it doesn’t work out, so we limit ourselves to Friday & Saturday night flexibility. Mind you, that trivia quiz sounds good fun – so I’m envious!
