I can count on one finger the number of times I haven’t had to work on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (well, two now), so today feels special.

It also feels cold. Holy crap is it cold. The temperature has barely risen above zero in 36 hours, so suffice it to say, we are celebrating Dr. King’s legacy with a blazing fire in the wood stove, a movie or two on the telly, and a big ol’ pot of cream of mushroom soup.

I have a dream…of snow, but because hell has apparently frozen over in more ways than one today, we’d have to go to Florida or Louisiana for the fluffy white stuff.

We didn’t do a whole lot over our long weekend. I’d suggested a spontaneous road trip to South Dakota to catch the Burning Beetle Festival in Custer. This annual event attracts hundreds of people, who carry torches while chanting “Burn, beetle, burn!” before setting fire to a giant wooden beetle effigy.

Only in South Dakota, amirite?

It’s not just a bunch of people embracing anarchy though. Burning Beetle was created to raise awareness of the destructive impact of the mountain pine beetle, which turned thousands of acres of ponderosa pine forests in the Black Hills into sawdust a few years ago. Setting the thing on fire is like a big, fat eff you to the destructive little bugger.

It’s also a ton of fun, and attending became an annual tradition for us, bitter cold of mid-January be damned. We’d make a weekend out of it, staying in a motel and bar-hopping after the beetle burned to the ground. There isn’t a lot I miss about South Dakota, but Burning Beetle ranks high up there. While Tara liked the idea of heading out there for the weekend, she said money’s too tight at the moment. You might say the spirit and flesh were willing but the wallet was not.

Oh, well. Maybe next year.

This isn’t to say our weekend was a complete dud. Saturday, we ventured out to Mineral Point, some 90 minutes west, to hit up Crazy Frank’s Flea Market. The name’s a bit misleading though; they don’t actually sell fleas – it’s really just a cavernous antique/vintage store with over 350 vendors. And most importantly, it’s located indoors, e.g., Not Out In The Frigid Cold. We spent a couple of hours scouring the aisles and came away with $59 worth of treasures, a random collection of knickknacks that included Carole King’s Tapestry on vinyl, a bird house, candle holders, plant stands, and a Jeremiah Johnson DVD.

We’d worked up an appetite after all that scouring, so we found a dive bar nearby and settled in for cheese curds, cod nuggets, and Moscow Mules. Sounds like an odd combination, typing it out like that, but it totally hit the spot. We made a couple more stops before arriving home after dark.

Tomorrow it’s back to work. I’m not crazy about the idea of pulling out of the driveway in ten-below-zero temps, but I haven’t been into the CheeseGov office in a week thanks to my short-lived cold, so I can’t complain too much.

And, because I said I wanted to do this more…

Reading

  • The Gone World, Tom Sweterlitsch. I love a good time travel tale, but this one is too bogged down with a convoluted plot and characters it’s hard to feel drawn to. My rating: 3 stars, which is 1/2 a star too generous.
  • The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and Murder, David Grann. I don’t often read nonfiction, but once in awhile I’m in the mood for a good ol’ historical yarn, and this book won all kinds of acclaim. There’s mutiny! And murder! And survival of the fittest! I dive in tonight.

Watching

  • Fargo, Season 2. Our third round, after watching Seasons 5 and 1. Despite the lack of any big names, like Billy Bob Thornton and Jon Hamm, the storyline is gripping and the intensity nonstop. So far, this season’s my favorite.
  • Landman. Just finished the latest Taylor Sheridan hit on Paramount Plus and was blown away. Billy Bob Thornton (again) absolutely nails the role, and there’s a nice blend of drama, intrigue, romance, and humor. There better be a season 2 oil else!
  • Cobra Kai. Finally got around to watching the first two installments of the sixth and final season. It’s just as fun-spirited and cheesy as always, but there’s an added extra dark layer this time around. Can’t wait to see who’s left standing on the Sekai Taikai podium when part three lands Feb. 13.

Is it cold where you are, too? What are some of your current pop culture indulgences?

  1. You have to love a village of rampaging citizens carrying torches. Burning Beetle sounds like my kind of festival.
Temps have bottomed out here too. We’ll see negative numbers at night all week.

    1. Yikes. Maybe you should grab a few torches…not to pillage and burn, but to stay warm!

  2. I seem to remember once owning Tapestry, but then perhaps that is just my imagination making things up. Alison and I used to frequent local flea markets when she still lived in WA. She found lots of vinyl to start her collection… not always in the best shape but then she didn’t care. Speaking of- during our last video chat she tried to sell me on the late 80’s band BarkMarket. Do you know of them? Specific mention was the song Visible Cow. Apparently she just scored a deal on the vinyl from somewhere off continent- England maybe? I will simply say I was not impressed when I played through some of their music. Layer up and stay safe!

    1. “Tapestry” is such a great album, one of the most influential of the ’70s. It’s been on our list forever…I was super excited to find a copy for only $6! Never heard of BarkMarket, but I’ll admit I’m curious now. I’ll probably check them out on Spotify.

      1. Well let me know what you think. I can only define them as slight grunge with a healthy dose of thrash metal as the predominant sound. But then I only managed to listen to that one song before calling it a definite no.

  3. Oh my gosh! Thanks for the podcast shoutout! 😊
We’re at the exact same spot with Cobra Kai. It’s gotten a bit eye-roll-y, but we’re seeing it through.
Is it cold here? My district moved to an e-learning day tomorrow – woo hoo!! – and we’re waiting to see if the Husband’s school calls it off. 🤞 Districts are dropping like flies ’round here. I haven’t been out of the house since Sunday morning and I don’t intend to step outside until Wednesday morning. Love to hunker down!! Stay warm tomorrow. I hope you get a window seat!

    1. Happy to shout you out. You always keep me entertained!

It must really be cold if Minnesota schools are saying it’s too cold to come to class in person. Bundle up!

      1. With windchills, it’s going to feel like -35.7 F tomorrow morning (my district’s cutoff is -35, so we just made it). Even Minnesotans can’t tolerate that!

      2. They’re forecasting the same for us. Driving in is going to be miserable.

  4. Never heard of Burning Beetle before. I did a quick Google search to look at images. One of the coolest images linked to some guy with a blog site – Mark My Words. Ha! From 2020. I followed the link to your post.

It’s 9° out there – on the way down to 3°. I love a good flea market and used to have a space in one. I dragged myself out into the cold today and to a Goodwill. Grabbed a mug, a David Baldacci book, three crossword puzzle books, and two new jigsaw puzzles. Total $13.13. Not bad.

Saw an interview with Jon Hamm. He said he enjoyed working with Billy Bob Thornton and hoped they could work together again sometime. What?? The interviewer said, “In season two.” Jon laughed and said, “Yeah.” That didn’t sound promising.

    1. What a fun, roundabout way to get back to my blog, ha. I’m honored it was one of your favorite images!

Jon Hamm’s response could have had more to do with the fate of his character (no spoilers here) than the show. Here’s hoping!

  5. Ack! I was all excited for a minute regarding your first book because I was gonna debate you on that bad rating, but turns out I read The Gone-Away World by Nick Harkaway. And I’m not talking about how many books I read in 2024 with Rivergirl in the room. I am ashamed.

  6. Yeah too damn cold the next 3 days brrrrrr. Just watched the Lego Movie Piece by Piece (Pharell Williams Documentary) On season 6 of The Goldbergs, making my way through every Bowery Boys film, discovering new music via the BBC 6 Music show Roundtable, where the host Hew Stevens gets reviews and scores from a panel of 3 entertainers.

  8. the beetle burning is definitely something to look forward to next year! it’s damn cold here, too, and my furnace had a problem all day and finally – heat was restored! why does that always happen on one of the coldest days of the year? I binged the entire 3 seasons of Hacks and it was so good! Reading a book from the 50s, Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, so fun reading a book from that era. Listening to old Police albums.

  9. I love dive bars with good food and yummy amber ales on tap. There’s just something relaxing and unpretentious about them. Also, usually GREAT people watching. 🙂 I enjoy ’80s alt rock; is that what the Cure is? It’s in the 20s here and we’re all whining like true Western Washingtonians do. LOL

    1. The Cure is definitely 80s/90s alt rock – and their 2024 comeback album is pretty great too! People watching is the best part. 🙂

  10. Middle Child is always pissed she has to work on MLK Day. What’s up, library!?? We’ve had a brutal amount of lake effect snow here. My spouse had to do the driveway three times on Sunday. We are over this sh*t and now we are getting the negative temps. I miss being outdoors😩

I’m watching The Traitors which is some seriously good reality TV. And getting my fix of TikTok!

    1. Lake effect snow fascinates me. We don’t really get that here, unless the wind happens to be blowing from the east, which is pretty rare. Even then, it’s limited to just a few miles in from the shore.

Looks like it’s going to warm up soon…at least compared to what the eastern two-thirds of the country has seen so far this winter.

  12. My pop culture has been K-dramas, some of which also have time travel in them. “The Lovely Runner” is one of those. Today I’m watching “Wicked” with a friend, which is very exciting. We’ve had cooler than average temps and for one brief, glorious, day there was rain in the forecast. But those are gone now and fire danger continues.

    1. I hear a new fire broke out, too. Really hoping you guys get some rain soon. Nine months without is ridiculous!

  13. The Wager is such a good book. And once you’re done with it, you should read In the Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick. Shipwrecks make such good non-fiction reading.

  14. Burning Beetle. This sounds like a lovely little event. 🫣 Wouldn’t it be nice if you could actually FIND the terrible beetles and do them in, ya know and not have to worry about them any longer. Bastid Beetles!

Is it cold here? yes, currently 58* and we are loving it. Stay warm!

    1. I guess the beetles were basically eradicated years ago. This is more of a warning for them to STAY AWAY OR THEY TOO WILL BURN.

  15. I love that you got Carole King’s Tapestry on vinyl! That album is my absolute favorite from childhood. I have my dad’s original copy, and I’ve been playing it here and there this year. It’s just so good from start to finish.

By th way, it’s going to be in the 40s next week. Definitely open-window weather! 🤣

    1. It’s such a classic! Like you said, not a bad song on there. We’ve had it on our list for awhile; glad I didn’t pay $30 for it at the record store in Madison. $6 was a steal!

      40° will feel downright balmy.

Thanks for the heads up about Cobra Kai three dropping Feb 13. Just marked my calendar!

I hope the Black Hills have done something about that beetle problem by now.

OMG, “Pictures of You” by The Cure just started up in my playlist a moment before I hit send on this comment. 🙂

    1. You guys are about the only ones in the country with pleasant temps these days (though I suppose the fires are a bad tradeoff).

  19. I was going to say something derogatory about a beetle burning festival, and then remembered about the UK having a cheese hill rolling event, and wound my neck right back in!

I was thrown by your reference to Florida for finding the fluffy white stuff. Did it snow in Florida? Is that normal?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I remember seeing the cheese rolling thing on an early season of The Amazing Race.

It snowed in Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and Florida this week – 8″ in some places! That is NOT normal at all. They’re calling it a once in a lifetime event.
