While driving around on New Year’s Eve running a few errands, I was listening to The Top 50 of 1994 countdown on Lithium, SiriusXM’s ’90s alternative and grunge rock channel.

Man, that took me back.

I have such a fondness for the ’90s – and that year in particular. To borrow from Dickens: it was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was also 30 years ago. Hard to say which I miss most: the great music or my youth.

Probably both in equal measure.

It’s not like I’m wearing rose-tinted glasses (or any other colored eyewear, for that matter): I know the ’90s weren’t perfect, and even if I could get that time machine I’ve been tinkering with in the basement to finally work, I wouldn’t go back to 1994 permanently; I don’t want to wait another 30 years to find out if Carmy’s fine-dining restaurant gets a good or bad review and whether he finally gets his head out of his ass and apologizes to Claire Bear.

Let’s face it, Season 3 felt about that long already.

But I would absolutely spend a long weekend there (or, more accurately, then) — even though 1994 people would think I was nutty, ’cause I’d spend the whole time wandering around going, “OMG! Blockbuster!” and “OMG! A pay phone!” and “OMG! The Montreal Expos!” and “OMG! Toys ‘R’ Us!” and “OMG! Zima!” and “OMG! Living World War I veterans!”

But man, to turn on the radio and hear the “new” Soundgarden tune, “Black Hole Sun” (#1 on the Lithium countdown) – that alone would be worth the trip…though if I wanted to download the track, I’d have to turn on my dial-up modem, hope for no incoming phone calls, and wait seventeen hours.

As nostalgic as I am for the past, there’s a lot to be said for instant gratification.

The rest of NYE – the Eve-iest part, if you will – was low-key and fun. Tara and I played cards, listened to music, drank beers/canned cocktails, and ate egg rolls. Most shocking of all, I actually stayed up ’til midnight for the first time in years (though a last-second scramble to find Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve on Hulu proved fruitless, forcing us to welcome 2025 with fireworks in Chicago rather than a ball drop in New York City).

New Year’s Day was pretty laid back, too. Other than taking a long walk in the cold — I was amazed by how many people still had decorations up; seeing Christmas trees twinkling festively in living room windows and inflatable snowmen in yards momentarily, for a very brief second, made me regret packing everything up already — we didn’t do a whole hell of a lot. Tara made good-luck ham and black-eyed peas and we finally started binging Fargo again. This time we started with Season 1 instead of inadvertently powering through Season 5, so we’re makin’ progress, kids!

Now that it’s Thursday and we’re two days into the new year, the holidays are over and it’s back to the grind. Bah, humbug. I had to turn alarms on that had been silenced for weeks. Oh, well – the condensed work schedule and copious time off was fun while it lasted, but like the ’90s, all good things must come to an end.

What do you miss most about the past (’90s or any decade)? Was your New Year’s Eve rockin’ up ’til midnight or did you crash early? Still got your holiday decorations up?

  1. I listen to Lithium all the time! Love that decade of music. Also, love The Bear! Got a record player for Christmas and the first albums purchased was Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam! Ha! Sounds like a lovely holiday break. Happy New Year! Katie

  2. I have not thought of Zima in probably 25 years. Loved that stuff. Predating that by about 15 years or so it would have been Annie Green Springs and Boone’s Farm. Good times indeed! I was a mom for the 3rd time in 1993 so I guess I’m supposed to say that I miss my last child growing up (which I do) but there were also a number of negatives that happened in the 90’s so…
I would not have known who Soundgarden was in the 90’s except for “some grunge band from Seattle” but now Black Hole Sun is right up there on my favs Spotify playlist next to Alice in Chains. The locals with their fireworks woke me at 12:02 so does that count as being up to welcome 2025? I took a long walk yesterday and it was a mix of barren houses with no memory of holiday decor and those who will likely choose to keep some aspects of their holiday displays up well into spring. Folks bend the rules a lot here in my little town. Hope you can remember how to manage that work/life balance as you transition back to the grind Mark 🙂

    1. I only know of Boone’s Farm by reputation – but what a reputation that is. Sounds like you were a fun person to party with back in the day!

I give Alice in Chains a slight edge over Soundgarden, but really, all the popular grunge bands from that time are great. Ever listen to The Melvins? They were a big inspiration to Kurt.

No fireworks here, but I’m feeling generous, so I will give you that staying-up-until-midnight gold star based on a technicality!

  3. Ah, the ‘90’s. I was thin and had two fully functioning knees. Good times!
Zima. Wow, haven’t thought of that in decades. Lithium is a great channel, I flip there from Spectrum once in a while and feel young.

  4. The decorations are down, excepted for the NYE table runner. Next up, Chinese New Year! The Christmas stuff left a mark, though, which I will eventually get around to blogging about. A lot of lights still up in the neighborhood, though. I wouldn’t want to go back to any era for any reason other than historical research. Most of it was worse for all of us except white men. Plus, I love being able to google the answer to everything from “how is compliment different from complement” to “did Elon Musk get gender affirming surgery?”

    1. Year of the Snake, baby! Woot!! (I’m trying to drum up enthusiasm in case you are all holiday’d out and lacking.)

Just think, in another 20 years, we might get nostalgic for today. Hard to believe (and I hope not, because that would mean things are even worse than now.)

      Err, regarding Elon…did he?

  6. Decorations (except pillow covers) have all been collected and placed on the dining room table, where they will sit until I can motivate myself to actually put them away. I miss my pre-COVID weight the most. Crashed before midnight, but Jan. 1 was great. We have a tradition to stay in our PJs all day and binge watch the day away. We watched Only Murders in the Building, something that didn’t take for us the first time, but that we really got into this time.

    1. Funny, we really got into Only Murders in the Building right away, but lost interest a few episodes into Season 3. Regardless, I like your tradition! We were going to start binging Yellowstone, but the premier was 2.5 hours and we didn’t have enough time for that. Maybe after Fargo!

  7. The 90s – what a great decade to reminisce about! I remember getting a cordless home phone so I needn’t be ‘struck to the wall’ and could actually multitask when talking.
I sure don’t miss getting bumped off the internet when a cash came in!
I remember finding TV shows that I could really relate to (late 90s) – Ally McBeal and Sex in the City. But I had to wait a whole week for each episode 😭
And, I was into both Rave Parties and grunge. Give me all the experiences!

    2. Remember how cool car phones were?! Even though they were the size of shoeboxes and still attached via a cord, anyone who had one was a total badass. Alas, I never did have a car phone in my crappy yellow Chevette.

I still prefer waiting a week between episodes, as I am for “Dexter: Original Sin” and “Landman” currently (two great shows I need to write about soon).

  9. After eating waaaay too much on NYE, I fell asleep while bingeing the last season of Grownish, because that’s how far behind I am. But I was rudely awakened at midnight by fireworks in the hood, so I did see the clock strike midnight. Life in the ‘burbs!

I always take our decor down the weekend after New Year’s. I’m dreading that this weekend. I missed out on a lot of the ’90’s because all my kids were babies. But there was indeed some great music, my fave being Barenaked Ladies. And oddly enough, my husband and I still like Blink 182.

I’m on my desktop because these damn snowflakes of yours do not allow me to comment on my ipad. What’s up with that??

    1. You’re the second person to mention being awakened by fireworks. I didn’t hear any myself, but then again, we’re out in the sticks.

The snowflakes don’t let you comment? Well, that’s rude of ’em! If it’s any consolation, I believe they disappear after today. Speaking of, are you in the path of the upcoming winter storm? Sadly, it’s going to miss us to the south. If it’s going to be cold, I’d at least prefer to have some snow to accompany that!

      1. Yes, it’s coming down right now. I think ours will be mostly lake effect, but another storm is supposed to come on Monday. So far, we only have about 4 inches.

I managed to get a cold on New Years Eve so it wasn’t the most exciting evening (not that I usually stay up much past 10 or 11 anyway). All decorations are put away and the house looks rather empty.

    1. I was more of a Hollywood Video regular, but either way, I miss the whole video store experience. Imagine our surprise and delight when we moved to Rapid City in 2018 and found ourselves a few blocks away from Mr. Movies, a local chain. Sadly, they closed a year or two later, but it was fun while it lasted.

      Hope you feel better soon!

  12. Zima! I never drank it but remember its popularity. I had two beers then lost my taste for it. The boyfriend and I watched “Wicked Little Letters” and went to bed about midnight. Then we listened to the explosions, car alarms and gun shots for about half and hour. Sigh.

  13. Love this post! I don’t know that I miss things of my generation – rotary phones, 8-track tapes, film cameras, but I kind of loved the era of my youth. No cell phones or tablets – we did stuff.

Sounds like your New Year’s holiday was relaxing. My tree is still up. And I’m a rom com/Hallmark movie kind of gal, so who knows how I found Fargo, but I loved it! Billy Bob Thorton sucked me in, and I was hooked after that.

Started reading No Time for Kings last night. Almost to the halfway point. Very entertaining and hard to put down.

    1. I’m enjoying a double dose of Billy Bob Thornton these days, as we have also gotten sucked into “Landman.” His character is still charismatic as hell, but a lot less violent. I’ve always appreciated his acting skills.

I’m glad you’re enjoying NTFK! Thank you so much for the support and the kind words. 🙂

  14. There are many moments in the past that I would revisit, briefly, before returning to being here now. The years from 1994 – 1997 were a fun time for me. So were the carefree days of high school and the “anything goes” days of college. I also loved the 3 years I spent in law school ~ hard work but so so fascinating.

We packed up the Christmas decor on January 1st because I was anxious to see what our new apartment would look like without trees, and Santas, and reindeer ruling the roost.

We started moving in on December 3rd; I decorated for Christmas as I unpacked. As a result, much of our year-round decor got stashed in closets awaiting the post-Christmas season. Since we shed a bunch of furniture during the move (including 4 tall bookcases, 2 large dressers, a king bed, a sofa, a loveseat, and 3-4 tables), I had to be creative in figuring out where (and whether) to place our various knick knacks and paddy whacks.

When minimalists say “less is more” . . . they are correct. It is MORE challenging to find the right balance and MORE satisfying when you do.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR!

    1. I know what you mean! Our apartment in Rapid City had very little storage, so we got creative by stacking our booze on the bookcase instead. Novels are fine but liquor is even better on a cold winter’s day!

Good luck with finding the perfect spaces and getting settled in…and Happy New Year! According to Larry David, I got that in just under the wire.

  16. I used to love the Lithium channel when I had Sirius! I even made a 90s grunge playlist last summer. The 90s were such a good time—when I had disposable money to enjoy all the fun things.

We still have our decorations up. They’ll come down this weekend. I’m a sucker for ambient lighting, so I love keeping the tree up as long as possible.

    1. The only problem with the ’90s was a lack of disposable income. I was a college student, then a newlywed, then a first-time homeowner with a newborn. There wasn’t a lot of spare change left to go out and do fun things. Kinda sucks that many people don’t have a lot of money until they’re too old to really live it up, ha! (Not a problem with us though.)

  19. Happy New Year. I took all my decor down by the 28th, with no regrets. I did NOT make it to midnight, also with no regrets as this girl needs her beauty sleep. We went out for an early dinner, watched TV and relaxed; that was the end of our 2024.

Would I love to visit the 90’s again? hell yeah. But momentarily too, because we can’t live in the past, but it was a much simpler time which is weird since we had less technology.

    1. More irony: less technology made us more connected. We actually engaged with others instead of staring at our phones all day. In many ways, the ’90s were the perfect decade!
