I’ve been doing photo Christmas cards literally since I was born. It’s a tradition that continues to this day. Luckily, Tara is a willful participant. (Or maybe she’s just humoring me. Either way, she’s in the pics, which is all that matters.)

This year we were scrambling for a photo at the last minute. Often, we’ll feature a shot from a trip we took during the year, but 2024 was the first time ever that we didn’t travel out of town together for even a single night. With Thanksgiving fast approaching, I was getting desperate. And then inspiration struck. With a wink and a nod to a classic Milwaukee-based sitcom, happy days were here again.

That’s the Bronze Fonz statue on the Milwaukee Riverwalk. Armed with my Nikon, a tripod, and a Santa hat, we made the trek downtown the Saturday before Thanksgiving. It was a cold and overcast morning, but those clouds were a blessing as we would have been backlit otherwise. I’m very pleased with how this year’s card turned out. By including Laverne and Shirley, we doubled down on the Garry Marshall-themed Christmas.

We sent out about 50 of these cards…and roughly half the recipients couldn’t figure out who Arthur was! Either they never watched Happy Days or weren’t familiar with Mr. Fonzarelli’s first name. I knew this would be the case but I’ve never met an obscure pop culture reference I didn’t love, so like Steve Winwood, I rolled with it.

(See?)

Those who did get it loved it. My parents were especially complimentary, declaring it our best holiday card ever. I’m kinda partial to our first Christmas in Wisconsin, when we stood in front of the welcome sign beside a busy freeway and Tara wore a cheese head (so many passing cars honked!), but yeah. This one ranks up there.

Hopefully, next year’s card will come together a lot sooner. The holidays are stressful enough!

Even though I was skeptical about our chances this year, we ended up with a white Christmas after all. Thanks to cold temperatures and a frozen ground, we still had 1″+ on the ground from the previous week’s snowstorm. Granted, freshly falling snow would have been even better, but last Christmas was rainy and in the 50s, so no complaints here. It definitely felt more like the holidays with that blanket of white.

Christmas Eve, I did something I hadn’t done in 2.5 years: took myself out to the movies, i.e., an actual theater. The last movie I’d seen on the big screen was Elvis in June 2022. That was one whole state ago! Tara had to work a half-day on Tuesday, but she had no interest in Gladiator 2 anyway. I know reviews have been mixed, but I thought it was fantastic. Loved the way they continued the story in a manner that seemed logical to me. And sure, some of it was over the top – I seriously doubt man-eating sharks ever swam around in the Colosseum – but, to borrow a line from Maximus, was I not entertained? You betcha.

Traditionally we drive around after dark on Christmas Eve, drinking spiked cocoa and checking out holiday lights, but this year I suggested just cozying up in the living room with Christmas movies and a nip of sipping cream instead. Tara enthusiastically agreed and it turned out to be a really nice evening.

Christmas Day was no slouch either. We brewed a pot of coffee and opened our gifts right away – Tara got me a drone, guys! I’ve wanted one of these since I was two years old (weird, given they didn’t exist then). Now I can really level up my photo game! – and I got her a pair of Mid-Century Modern wall sconces she’d admired the last time we hit Atomic Antiques in Madison. Plus other cool stuff. I think we both nailed the gift-giving this year.

Tara spent a good chunk of the day cooking (prime rib, mac ‘n cheese, veggies, Yorkshire pudding, and – just for fun – a cheesecake). I felt badly, even though she insisted she enjoys preparing fancy holiday meals, so I made it up to her by washing the not-insignificant pile of dishes. We also watched the last of our holiday movies and drank Bloody Marys. It was a great day and felt a little extra special because we’d been apart all of last week.

Today I’m back at work, and it feels odd. Amazing how quickly we get used to being on vacation (and how hard it is to flip off that switch). But because all the Eves and Days fall on Tuesday and Wednesday this year – my two in-office days – and they’re state holidays, I won’t actually have to go into CheeseGov until the week of Jan. 6. That makes the transition a little easier. When I do return to the office, we’re switching to flexible work spaces that week, so I’ll no longer have a permanent cubicle. More than a fair trade-off for getting to work from home 3x/week.

How was your holiday? Did you get snow? What was your favorite gift this year? Would you have known who Arthur referred to?

  1. In reverse order:
I knew exactly who Arthur is/was- not sure what tense to use given that we are referring to a character and or statue.

Various kids gifted a new 1000 piece puzzle to keep my brain sharp (a PNW version of Van Goghs “A Starry Night, with evergreens and a mysterious Sasquatch crossing under the night sky) and other little do dads and such all from sustainable companies and all eco friendly.

We got and still have torrential rain and high winds both of which are going to mess with my rather crappy internet so no streaming movies until the weather calms down.

Lovely, a nice dinner with the only WA remaining kid/spouse and the in laws and Lila the very mixed breed dog who loves me because I bring her cheese sticks.

    1. Dogs aren’t the only ones who are won over by cheese sticks. Just sayin’. Crappy weather aside, it sounds like a lovely and eco-friendly holiday. Perfect if you’re the type who dreams of a green Christmas!

  2. A most excellent Xmas card. Garry would be proud.
We ended up with 4 inches of fluffy white stuff on the 24th so it was perfectly white for us.
Glad Gladiator wasn’t a bust. We enjoyed the first one..

    1. My dad saw Gladiator 2 first and was pretty enthusiastic, so I figured it would be worth the price of admission (only $8.50 – I figured with inflation, ticket prices would be a lot higher these days). Glad Mother Nature cooperated and delivered you a white Christmas! It won’t make up for your Covid, of course, but at least you didn’t have to worry about going out and driving in it.

    1. I have no idea; that was a pre-designed card from Snapfish. I was able to change the font on the personalized portion, but the “Merry Christmas” part could not be edited. It is rather elegant though!

  4. I knew who Arthur was right away. What do I win? You really need to start giving away prizes in your 15th year. 🤣

Your Christmas sounds magical. Your post has me googling Yorkshire pudding. I’ve heard of it before but never really knew what it truly was. Now I’m craving it.

Our holiday was really good, just missing one important person. My favorite gift would have to be something Mike got my mom. I’m sharing it in Monday’s post.

    1. Well, you win my undying gratitude and appreciation for your pop culture skills, fellow child of the ’70s. That’ll have to do for now. 🙂

I had no idea what Yorkshire pudding was until we had to make it during our 2013 food challenge. Now it’s a semi-regular staple, at least around the holidays. How very British of us.

Can’t wait to see your Monday post!

  5. That’s indeed a fab photo card. And of course I knew who Arthur referred to. I did a photo card this year for the first time since 2014. Ours were always of our 3 kids in various holiday poses or from a trip. Once my oldest got married, I quit. But we had so many great photos of the kids and grands in the Finger Lakes that I did a big mash up photo card and it turned out great.

I tell everyone to not get me anything, but I did receive wine, champagne and chocolates. The best gift for me is everyone being here to celebrate.

    1. I’m glad you did a photo card this year. I love them and think they’re a great and fun tradition! My parents told us not to get them anything this year (as they always do), but they both got Bombas slipper socks anyway. I did say earlier this year everyone I was giving gifts to was getting Bombas!

  6. We had a great day with our youngest son and his girlfriend. Part Two will take place this weekend when our oldest son and his family are here.

    No snow because Georgia.😢

My favorite gift is a pair of blinged out sneakers by Betsey Johnson. They’re my first (and probably only) designer anything.

I would absolutely recognize Arthur Fonzarelli!

We had a similar photo card dilemma. We usually use a photo from one of our trips but we didn’t travel much this year. We had a few selfies from our trip to St. Augustine, but ultimately went with one from our visit to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

    1. You’re lucky that Christmas isn’t over for you yet! By the time you enjoy your second celebration, all our holiday decor will be packed up in bins and piled in the garage for another year. Have fun this weekend, and thank you for not being mystified about Arthur!

  7. My Christmas was great until we got home and got the mail with our auto insurance dropped (hence the depressed photo i posted) because my wife filed 2 claims in 1.5 years. We got snow on the 24th but nothing stuck around worth a shovel. The grass was white and pretty for the 25th, i haven’t gotten all my gifts yet to offer an answer. Seeing my brother and his family Friday. Love Happy Days but weirdly only noticed your cats on the card 🤔🤣

  8. Terrific card! I got the reference right away . . . Mrs. C always called the Fonz, “Arthur.”

Sounds like you had a cozy Christmas with Tara! I’m jealous of the Yorkshire Pudding, but we did have Mac & Cheese and roasted veggies . . . with a side of Lasagna at my niece’s place. And homemade peanut butter kiss cookies.

Favorite present? I gave my niece the flash drive from the Digital Photo Frame that she gave us last year so that she could add a bunch of new photos, mostly of my great-nephew, Landon.

Also from my niece, a wagon for carting groceries from the car, through the lobby, up the elevator, and down the hall to our NEW apartment ~ which is just 15 minutes away from Landon and his parental units! Perfecto! That proximity is the gift that keeps on giving!

BFF and I are enjoying our new place, but we haven’t had a chance to do too much exploring yet. I’m waiting for the weather to warm up a bit. Not only are we 180 miles north of where we were . . . but a cold snap arrived and isn’t anxious to depart.

    Happy New Year!

    1. The grocery wagon is a smart purchase! Tara bought us one when we moved into our Rapid City apartment and that thing was a lifesaver – especially in the snow. You can be jealous of my Yorkshire Pudding; I’ll be jealous of your lasagna.

Happy New Year to you too!

      1. Even better . . . my niece WON the wagon in a raffle at our new apartment’s Ugly Sweater Party. She gifted it to us because we had mentioned just the day before that we planned to get one.

      2. That’s great! Let me ask you this: was her sweater truly ugly? The Milwaukee CheeseGov office had an ugly sweater contest, but the person who won had a sweater that wasn’t even remotely ugly. I was very disappointed.

      3. Nope. Not ugly. But she didn’t win for having an ugly sweater. She won by putting a FREE raffle ticket in the hopper and having the staff pick her ticket out of the hopper. Sweet!

  9. I did get the Arthur joke, and, of course, the cats. Very cute. Andy did the same Sunday dinner as Tara (minus the Mac&Cheese) on the 23rd, rather than Christmas Eve, because my oldest nephew was visiting (briefly, on the way to see his girlfriend). I somehow wound up making a lot of cookies again, though at least I had Dalton to roll out some of the sugar cookie dough this year. And do all the dishes. Favorite gift? Tough call. My dad gave me some beautiful earrings, but I always love the fancy advent calendars from Andy.

  10. No snow in SoCal. My fave “gift” was a fluffy warm shirt that I’d ordered from Temu. I was too sick to go look at lights.

My experience with “floater” desks is that everyone picks a preferred spot and sticks to it whenever possible.

Happy Boxing Day, Hannukah, and Kwanzaa!

I love that the snow appears on all posts too. I’ll miss it when it’s gone in a week.

      1. I haven’t had snow on wp in several years.

Back in the 90s, my company concerted ¼ of the building to little privacy cubes and file cabinets for sales reps to use – but never official rolled it out or encouraged use. I only saw 1 person there, ever… ¼ of the office wasted while everyone else’s cubes were downsized to accommodate the loss of footage. My equip room was in that area so I had a LOT of privacy!!

  11. Your Christmas Cards are “perfectamundo” a term The Fonz was apparently famous for. (He was part of my childhood and one of the reasons I wanted a motorbike.)
I’m new to your blog. Over time I’ll learn what the cheese references mean – CheeseGovs and CheeseHeads!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Anyone who knows “perfectamundo” is certain to get the Arthur reference! CheeseGov is my pseudonym for the State of Wisconsin department I work for, and of course, cheeseheads are pretty much the official headwear of the Green Bay Broncos. In other words, Wisconsin – being “America’s dairyland” – is all about the cheese!

  16. I’m honored to be one of the 50 recipients, and for the record, I knew exactly who was between you and Tara (besides which, the upturned thumbs were a dead giveaway). Happy Days was a regular show in our house growing up. If I’m not mistaken, the Fonz HATED being called Arthur.
Our Wisconsin Christmas was whiter than if we’d stayed in Minnesota, and we rolled into my mom’s town just before it started snowing.
You drink spiked cocoa while driving? Well, as I always say, Wisconsin’s open container laws are a little different from every other state’s. In Wisconsin, you get busted if you DON’T have an open container while driving. 😉
Please enlighten me: what is the purpose of flexible work spaces?
Hard to pick my favorite gift, but I just published a post about my most unexpected gift…

    1. I don’t blame the guy. I wouldn’t be enthused with the name Arthur either.

We’ve been doing the spiked cocoa thing since long before Wisconsin, lol. Just a splash of Schnapps in a travel container of cocoa. That ain’t nothin’ ’round here!

The State of Wisconsin is consolidating office space since so many people work hybrid schedules. At CheeseGov, if you’re in the office 3 or more days per week, you get a permanent cubicle. Otherwise, the flex spaces are first-come first-served. It makes sense: my cubicle was sitting empty 60% of the time. The nice thing is, we can sit at any open desk on any floor. If nothing else, it’ll keep things interesting!

      1. “Arthur My Words.” Yeah, that doesn’t work, does it?
Thanks for the explanation. That does make sense. I’ve been so frustrated that post-COVID, many managers are making people come back to the office (despite findings that they are more productive working from home) simply because “We’ve got an office building, so we’re gonna use it.” It really clogs up the highways for those of us who have no possibility of working from home. Here’s wishing you the window desk every time!

      2. Our REPUBLICAN (of course) Speaker of the State Assembly wants all state workers back in offices. Luckily, Governor Evers has vowed to veto any legislation calling for that. Still, it makes me a little uneasy knowing they could change that someday. I don’t know what I’d do then, because I certainly can’t see commuting to Madison five days a week. I’m just hoping the pushback would be too strong for that ever to happen.
