Right on cue, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. Not because of parties for hosting and marshmallows for toasting, but rather, Spotify Wrapped.

If you’re a music lover like I am, you eagerly await the results of your year-end Spotify recap with barely concealed glee. Top song, total minutes listened, favorite artist, it’s all there. I always enjoy seeing which music made the cut, and for me, 2024 held few surprises.

I’ve been listening to “Goin’ Against Your Mind” ever since it came out in 2006. After 18 years, it finally hit #1. Sweet! And, I raved about The Hold Steady when we saw them at Summerfest earlier this year. Like I said, no big surprises.

Tara, on the other hand? She was almost embarrassed to show me hers.

“I have no idea how this song ended up my most-played of the year,” she said before shamefully showing me her Wrapped. I couldn’t believe my eyes. My indie-and-alternative-rock-lovin’ wife’s most-played song in 2024?

“Dirty Work” by Steely Dan.

Holy yacht rock! I expected something from Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats or Kings of Leon, two of Tara’s favorite bands.

Don’t get me wrong, “Dirty Work” is a great song. But it’s also a 52-year-old song. I was practically still in pull-ups when Steely Dan was burning up the charts, and Tara wasn’t even born yet. Talk about reelin’ in the years! She chalks it up to pure randomness, as she would fire up classic rock playlists while toiling in the garden for hours, rather than some deep-rooted appreciation for Walter Becker and Donald Fagan, two dudes who sound like law firm partners instead of musicians known for blending elements of rock, jazz, Latin, R&B, and blues into sophisticated studio production with cryptic and ironic lyrics.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that, as Jerry would say.

“You know what this means, right?” I told Tara. “You listened to that song. And then you went back, Jack, and did it again.”

In retrospect, my wife’s Steely Dan love shouldn’t have been a surprise. The writing was on the wall all along. Literally.

Tara’s office wall.

I can’t say the weekend was particularly exciting, but I can’t say I’m too upset about that, either. Sometimes you just gotta do nada.

We’d planned on hitting our town’s annual Holiday Market, as we have in years past, but Tara had to work Saturday morning. By the time we left the house, the event was already winding down. We only had time to stop by one of the five locations before deciding to park it on a barstool at Paddy Coughlin’s for a few rounds. Priorities, man. Then we came home, played cards, ate shrimp tacos. But first, I queued up a Steely Dan record. Gotta keep the missus happy.

(I’m getting so much mileage out of this, huh?)

Then, so as not to break precedent, we skipped our town’s annual Holiday Parade Sunday night. We talked about going – we had a great time in 2022 – but that year’s parade was on a Saturday, which is so much more appealing. It was also almost a month earlier and cold AF. I feel badly not supporting our small town as much as we could have over the weekend, especially since it was about a thousand degrees warmer than last weekend, but at least our bar tab helped prop up the local economy.

Any surprises on your Spotify Wrapped? Steely Dan: yay or nay? Do you enjoy your town’s holiday festivities?

  1. Yes it was a warm weekend. We did pay 10 dollars and drove through a park to see Christmas lights! It was the closest and cheapest of all the lights but it didn’t disappoint us! Yes adding to the town’s economy!

    1. We tried to go to one of those drive-through Christmas light displays a couple of years ago, but the line of cars waiting to get in stretched at least a mile. That was too much car time for us!

      1. Ha ha! Maybe we got addicted to these!

  2. We generally skip our local Christmas parades. Traffic around here is awful due to no road planning when the towns began growing; fighting it to get to the parade venues just isn’t worth it. I’m okay with Steely Dan. I use Sirius XM instead of Spotify where – brace yourself – Yacht Rock Radio is one of my favorite stations.🤣

    1. I love Sirius XM too. That’s my go-to when I’m not listening to Spotify. I take it you hear a lot of Doobie Brothers, then…

      1. Gotta love the Doobie Brothers. Of course, I switch to the 70s station sometimes so I can hear Barry Manilow.

    1. If you like those two, are you also a Ryan Bingham fan?

      1. i like Ryan Bingham when I hear him, but I don’t ask Alexa for him exclusively. Usually it’s….Play Sturge or Tyler and similar artists. I also love Paul Cauthen, and he will be coming to the “non-weird” Portland in March, but no one else I am friends with listens to him! Gah!

  4. I have not looked at my Spotify Wrapped. I actually don’t know how. Sad. I’m guessing Taylor Swift, Chappelle Roan, and Gym Class Heroes. And some Beyonce. Probably Christmas music, too. We only got Spotify for Dalton, but it’s handy when I am doing my PT.

      Neither did she…

  6. Can’t say I’m a big Steely Dan fan, but to each their own. So many of their songs were played ad nauseam back in the day… if I never hear Deacon Blues again I’ll die happy.
As far as I’m concerned… Rikki CAN lose my number.

  7. Have not even thought to check Wrapped but I can guess that the top 5 are a combo of metal or glam rock- unless Alice in Chains won out, then I could toss in grunge according to some folks. Love Steely Dan and contrary to Rivergirl Deacon Blues is an all-time fave. My town is parade heavy- like for everything. How many years can you really see Santa on his truck float go 5 blocks? Rhetorical question: my answer is once is enough especially when you pile on all the high school related parades throughout the year and other festivals. I sound a bit Scrooge-esque don’t I 😉

    1. If Alice in Chains has even a small possibility of landing in your Top 5, I have newfound respect for you! Of all the grunge music I listen to, they are no doubt my top artist.

  9. After years of having to go to our town’s Christmas parade/tree lighting (thanks, Girl Scouts and high school choir/marching band) I’m sitting on my ass in a warm house and feeling sorry for those peeps. Cuz it was ALWAYS brutal!

Since I don’t have a paid Spotify account, it doesn’t give me a Wrapped, I guess? I really only use it to get psyched for upcoming nostalgic concerts. Cuz, Hey Nineteen! I don’t mind Steely Dan, but would not seek them out.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. “Hey Nineteen” and “Time Out of Mind” are both up there on my list of favorite Steely Dan songs (though I think it’s impossible to top “Do It Again”).

I wish we could have used cold weather as an excuse to skip the parade, but nope. All we can blame this year is laziness.

  10. If someone were to analyze me based on my spotify wrapped list, I fear they would have to come to the conclusion that I’m twisted beyond repair. On one hand, they would see a large chunk of spa-like instrumental music and then on the other I have pop and rap and hip-hop, and a heavy dosage of metal. Pick a lane Brian!! Ha, ha, of course, the different genres are for the different ways I listen to music: spa for sleeping, pop/rap to keep up with my son’s interests, and metal for working out. I’m sure it’s like this for most folks . . . but I definitely seem to have a wide variation of favorites. Ha, ha.

    1. I have pretty eclectic tastes too, but even with a good 12-15 playlists, I only ever listen to two or three on a regular basis. I think I need to branch out (though I’ll probably draw the line at spa music).

  11. Cheers to Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in a coveted spot on Tara’s office wall. And thank you for explaining the bit that I only sort of understood on SNL this past Saturday. I put it together…Spotify Wrapped, ‘year in review’ but as you might guess, I don’t Spotify. I Sirius XM…does that count? 😜

    1. It absolutely counts. I SiriusXM in the car and Spotify at work/home! (Though sometimes, I also Spotify in the car. Just depends on my mood.)

I’m a couple of episodes behind on SNL. I need to catch up!

  17. My Wrapped was a bit surprising this year. It didn’t quite match what I’ve been listening to, so I was a little disappointed.

    Steely Dan—yay! 🎉

Our town only does a tree lighting, but we never go. It’s literally just down the street, and we could walk to it… yet we never do. 😔

    1. Our town does not have a tree lighting, and that strikes me as odd. Seems like the quintessential small Midwest town holiday celebration…and it would be easy to do!

I’d put a bug in the mayor’s ear, but we also don’t have a mayor.

  20. My Spotify Wrapped was exactly as you might expect. Female country artists (and Taylor Swift) in the top four with Billy Joel coming in at number five. Just call me a basic bitch. I accept it. The only surprise was that a Bobby Vee song was my third most listened to song, a song that came out when my mother had barely started school. Oh, well. I am who I am.

We did not attend the parade. They line up in front of our house and this year it was one of the marching bands! So I feel like we sort of got a feel for it. The dog gets Very Anxious during the parade, so we just close all the blinds and turn on the television loudly and try to pretend everything is normal. But the dog does not believe me. And, this year, even the cat was irritated by the noise, so it was doubly good we stayed home.

    1. “I am who I am” is a great attitude! If who you are is a Steely Dan fan, or Taylor Swift, or Bobby Vee, own it! (I especially like that Billy Joel is in your Top 5. We got to see him last year in Minneapolis and he’s just amazing.)

Next year, no excuses: we’re watching the parade. AND attending more of the holiday market (if for no other reason than to buy some Broadway Bakers cookies).

And the cow parade! I still haven’t been to that either. What a slacker.

  21. I came to your blog after listening to Wynne interview you on her pod, so glad for you that Eye of The Tiger is long gone from your Wrapped! Over here in Australia, there’s a huge conspiracy theory discussion on the radio that Spotify Wrapped this year is throwing in older songs inaccurately!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thank you for stopping by! “Eye of the Tiger” might not have made it onto my Wrapped, but it’ll always be my anthem…even if I rarely listen to it!

Interesting theory about the old songs. I had a couple pop up on my list – Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin – but I do listen to those bands quite a bit, so I think in my case at least it’s legit.
