We have a couple of very clingy cats. Which is better than having aloof ones, I suppose…but it gets to be a bit much sometimes. If five minutes pass after sitting down without Laverne or Shirley (often both) jumping onto our laps, curling up, and catching some zzzs, it’s a miracle.

This isn’t an issue when we’re lounging on the recliner or couch, but middle of the day, at our desks when working from home? That gets to be tricky.

Unless you’re Tara. She doesn’t seem to mind. In fact, I totally blame her for their stubborn insistence on being up close and personal.

Geez Louise, I never even spoiled my kids this much! Clearly, my wife is much better at multitasking than me. It would be a lot easier to just shoo them away if they weren’t so damn cute. And sweet (most of the time).

God forbid we should enter a room and close a door. You’d think we were abandoning them forever based on their plaintive cries to let us in or come out, we misssssss you!!

Who knew Feline Separation Anxiety was a thing?!

Probably the best thing about working from home this time of year – besides not having to drive 45 minutes through 50-mph wind gusts, falling snow, and temperatures in the teens (Wednesday’s drive home was fun!) – is my basement office. Sure beats the drab grey CheeseGov cubicle I’m stuck in two days a week.

Not pictured: the festive holiday balls hanging from the ceiling and the Vince Guaraldi record (A Charlie Brown Christmas) all queued up.

I decorated the basement much more than last year. Figured I might as well, since I spend so much time down there. Our Denver Broncos Christmas tree even made an appearance for the first time in years.

Perhaps not coincidentally, the Denver Broncos are having a good season for the first time in years. They’ve made a Bo-liever out of me again.

Upstairs ain’t too shabby either (though, believe it or not, it’s less over-the-top than Halloween).

Come to think of it, the front yard’s pretty kickin’, too…

You knew there’d be a flamingo, right?

But you probably wouldn’t expect to find these dill-icious holiday treats. Man, what I’d give to see Rivergirl’s face right about now.

Do we know how to celebrate the holidays or what?!

Have I mentioned that Tara is headed to Mexico in a little over a week? If not, Hey, guess what? Tara is headed to Mexico in a little over a week! Her dad’s got a house in a small town on the western coastline of Jalisco (thanks, Wikipedia!) and wanted to spend a week with his daughters. Likewise, she doesn’t get to see much of her sisters, so it’ll be a nice bonding experience for them all. This will be the longest we’ve been apart since 2020, when she drove to Nevada to pick up our boat and bring it back.

The boat that we used one time in two years before selling, but that’s neither here nor there.

I could have gone – I wasn’t not invited – but we have clingy cats (see above), and also, I’m weird in that I prefer 25 degrees to 85 degrees. So, I’m staying put, but also taking some PTO time that week, hopefully to rustle up an adventure or two on my own. I tend to have spectacular fails whenever I’m left to my own devices, so we’ll see how I do. I figure the odds are 50/50 that something will go awry, knock on wood.

Finally, if you want to see/hear me yammer on about blog themes and URLs and other tech-y stuff, check out my latest podcast appearance on Sharing the Heart of the Matter. Wynne and Vicki keep having me back – this is my sixth time – so I must be doing something right! In fact, while we were recording this episode, all three of us were drinking Spindrift.

Now I know what it feels like to be an influencer.

  1. Oh, the cats. I love the cats. I’ve seen many pics of friends with cats on their laps. It’s adorable. I should get one. Eventually.

The dill pickle candy canes. OF COURSE I would try it, but I’m still skeptical.

Well done on the decor. When I saw the flamingo, I thought, “Ahhhh, the flamingo.” What’s that light blue round thingy to the right of the tree?

Good luck with your solo time. It will be entertaining to read about, I’m sure! 🙂

    1. The blue thingy is a cat toy; it’s got a ball that spins around and around whenever the cats swat at it. Which they do often, providing endless hours of entertainment for all of us.

Yeah. You need a cat or two. 🙂

The pickle-flavored candy canes are very good!

  2. My mom has that same white ceramic tree! I think it belonged to her mother. Beautiful decorations by the way! The pickle candy canes are a firm no but the trip to Mexico would be a welcome treat. Like you, I don’t like the super hot weather though. Nor do I like margaritas. It’s interesting that Denver is doing well now and that Russell Wilson is thriving (mostly) in Pittsburgh. Just a bad combination of coaches, players, quarterback during that Wilson/Denver fiasco? What are your thoughts?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Funnily enough, the white ceramic tree is a hand-me-down from my mom! They don’t make them like that anymore. I have pumpkins and bats that I swap out for Halloween, too. Nowadays, the tree stays up pretty much year-round!

Don’t even get me started on Russ. Where was that player the past two seasons?! The first year, I blame Nathaniel Hackett. Second-worst coach they ever hired. Last year, he just didn’t jibe well with Sean Payton. Given Payton’s excellent draft picks and an 8-5 record to date, it’s obvious everybody is better off after parting ways. It’s just a shame we’re on the hook for $85 million!

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Agreed on Hackett. Russ still has his problems: too short, can’t scramble well any more, OLD. He was never worth as much money as Denver gave him. 😦 I don’t like Payton as a person but his ruthlessness makes him a good coach.

        Liked by 1 person

      2. Totally agree! Payton will never give off the warm-and-fuzzies, but I can forgive that for a winning culture. So far, so good on that front.

Finally, someone to talk football with! 🙂

  3. I adore the fact you have obsessive lap cats. Lord Dudley never sits in ours. Ever. Though he dyes follow us from room to room so we must be somewhat lovable.
As for those atrocious abominations you call candy… no self respecting cane lover would be caught dead with one. Ugh. Way to ruin Christmas dude.
Love your outdoor lights! But just one bird…? He looks lonely.

    1. If it makes you feel better, we have four or five flamingo ornaments on the upstairs tree. We’re slowly building up that flock. Maybe the outside guy will get some friends someday.

It took my last cat quite awhile to discover my lap, but once she did, there was no going back.

I knew you’d love the candy canes! 🙂

  5. I totally get every word of the cat situation. welcome to my cat life. when I adopted Pete the cat recently, his foster mom said, ‘he likes to sit in my bra while I am working or typing on the computer.’ well, all is can say is she had a bigger ‘chest patio’ area that I do, and his expectations have been dashed with the first attempt. I’m not putting up a tree this year, just hanging up lots of things really high, as he is in the throngs of his baby/teenager cat maniac movement phase.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. I’m cracking up over “chest patio.” Tara hasn’t tried that yet (at least as far as I know, but I wouldn’t put it past her).

We were planning on a live tree this year, but with Tara in Mexico for a week right before Christmas, we decided to hold off since only one of us would be able to truly enjoy it. There’s no telling what Laverne and Shirley would have done with it anyway!

  6. I love that your workspace is decorated. It looks downright homey. I’m glad you can work from home rather than drive in the snow. Middle Child was able to do a virtual piano lesson yesterday, which I was so happy about because the roads looked treacherous. Enjoy your alone time adventures!

    1. It’s amazing that virtual piano lessons are even possible. What a wonderful time it is to be alive.

If/when it gets especially cold, I plan to fire up the wood stove when I’m working down there. That’ll really feel homey!

  8. Nice old school Broncos ornaments! Do the cats bother the trees at all? I actually have a hoodie with a cat pouch on it. The cat only goes in when it is very cold, though. And it is pretty hard to type with a cat on the lap. I dunno about the pickle candy canes, but at least they aren’t kale flavored. Nothing could be worse than that.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I’m surprised the cats don’t bother the trees more. Other than nibbling on a few of the branches when they first went up, they’ve pretty much ignored them. It’ll be interesting to see their reaction when we do a live tree in the future.

I have nothing against kale per se, but yeah…I don’t think it would make a great candy cane flavor.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Kale is nasty. One eats it for health benefits only. Unlike pickles.

  9. I love all things pickles, but a pickle-flavored candy cane has got to be a hard pass for me… but maybe they’re good?! Your home looks so cozy and inviting, though–I want to just let myself in, check out your holiday knick-knacks and enjoy the tree. It’s still 90 in Phoenix, so it’s hard to get into the Christmas spirit.

    1. Growing up, I spent many a Christmas in Hawaii, so I know how hard it is to get into the holiday spirit in a warm climate. We had humidity too, which made it even worse.

  11. I love my clingy cat, although he reclines like a sleeping baby on my dominant arm, so typing blog comments can range from challenging to downright impossible at times. Your place looks very festive, but it makes me tired thinking about how much work that must have been to put up. I decorated last weekend and, true to form, was mildly crabby about it the whole time. 🙂 Enjoy baching it while Tara’s gone!

    1. It took the better part of an afternoon to get everything up, which means it will take the better part of an afternoon to box it all up again. I’ll probably be crabby that day. Or, if the cats have taken my lap hostage, I may have an excuse not to take anything down at all!

  12. Oh, the seperation anxiety! Oro has to be touching me nearly 24/7 and it annoys the heck out of me!!

I recently realized my recently revived trouble sleeping at night is because there are now so many cats in bed with me that I can’t get comfortable… I’ve got no room to turn or flop or whatever. But I love them!!

  14. Never fails, our cat waits until I am just about to move/change positions/get up from whatever I’m doing, and that’s when he comes to my lap for a sweet hangout and cuddle. I don’t want to hurt his feelings, so instead of moving away, I sit a while longer just to snuggle up a minute. You think he has that all planned out, just to show who’s boss? Nice decorations, especially the ‘Major Award’ lamps. Hope you & Tara both have a delightful week doing what you do!

    1. Laverne and Shirley do the same thing. It’s like they have a second sense, knowing exactly when we’re about to get up, and take advantage of our desire not to disturb them when they’re comfortable!

  15. Your cats are absolutely adorable—I’d never get anything done if they lived in my house. My oldest daughter has a cat, and since she started working from home, he’s convinced he has a full-time job too.

Your home looks so warm and inviting.I love how you’ve decorated it for Christmas—it’s magical.

We’re the same way about traveling; we hate leaving our dogs. Plus, with essentially a farm here, finding someone to care for all the animals is quite the challenge. 🤣

    1. They certainly try their hardest to prevent us from being productive. I always think I’m hurting their feelings if I get up too soon after they’ve settled onto my lap, too. I doubt cats have the capacity to get butt-hurt about something like that, but I don’t like to take any chances.

I am MOST impressed by your Christmas decorating – you’re picking up the slack from chez Himself & Debs who will not be decorating this year as we’ve just been given notice by our landlords so are feeling grumpy!

Dill flavoured candy canes wouldn’t bother me as I never eat candy canes anyway – and I like the colour.
