Anyone who has read me long enough knows I love DVDs. While most people have gotten rid of theirs, I still buy them on occasion. I’m all about the physical media, baby!

Our collection currently numbers around 375 DVDs, and storage has long been an issue. We solved that problem when we purchased a DVD rack in March 2022, but we left Rapid City a mere five months after assembling the shelving unit, and it did not survive the move. It was tall and flimsy to begin with, and when we unloaded the U-Haul upon reaching Wisconsin, it was nothing more than a pile of metal and plastic. Bye-bye, $100. Hello, square one.

Not wanting to take our chances with another wobbly rack, Tara came up with an excellent (and hell of a lot cheaper) alternative: shelving for the basement wall. A few wall anchors and screws and a power drill later, we had a brand new storage solution for those DVDs.

Pretty handy, and the shelving takes up very little space in one corner of the basement. We even have room for our PS2 and Wii video games (yeah, we’ve got those, too). Best of all, there’s no chance of them tipping over!

This will be a great solution until we move again next year. (I kid, I kid.)

My parents fly back home tomorrow morning after a whirlwind weeklong visit. It’s amazing how near-perfect the weather has been; other than thunderstorms their first night, it was sunny and nearly fall-like the entire time. Next week it turns hot again, so they dodged that bullet.

By the way, the peach pie I made from scratch in July, and promptly stuck in the freezer, turned out delicious! There was some debate whether freezing it uncooked would have been smarter, but reheating it at 375° for 45 minutes brought it back to life perfectly. I got raves for the crust especially. As much work as that is to make – even my mom just uses a frozen Pillsbury crust – it’s totally worth the effort.

I will for sure have to make another one next summer, when our peaches ripen again.

Y’all had a few questions for my mom. First up, Rivergirl:

I’m tempted to ask if there was a lot of eye rolling during Mark’s childhood.

Sometimes. Mark was stubborn.

Well, I am a Taurus! That stubbornness is also key to my manifesting abilities, so I won’t apologize for it.

And also if she’s responsible for your disturbing devotion to SPAM…

No way are we responsible for the SPAM addiction; I don’t even like it. It probably came about from living in Hawaii.

It came about because SPAM is delicious, though I’m sure the Hawaii influence was strong, too. Bijoux posed the following questions:

Do you take any credit for your son’s musical tastes? What music did you play while he was growing up?

No, because I played a lot of Neil Diamond, Barbra Streisand, ABBA, and Chicago while he was growing up.

For the record, I like ABBA and Chicago (though strictly ’70s-era; none of this sappy ’80s-ballad crap, please) quite a bit, so there may have been some influence there!

What was his favorite food or meal?

He loved my homemade lasagna. I made it every year on his birthday.

I still do, mom! Which begs the question: why didn’t you make it this visit?!

And this one’s for Mark: Who orders Bloody Marys at a winery?

That’s a valid question, Bijoux. My parents, always on the lookout for new wineries to visit, found one in New Glarus last year called Bailey’s Run. We made the one-hour trek west, and I was intrigued by their Venom spicy jalapeño wine, which they offered in a Bloody Mary. I was skeptical but I’m always adventurous, so I ordered one…and fell in love.

It was actually one of the best Bloody Marys I’ve ever had, period. Spicy, salty, with just a subtle hint of sweetness from the wine. So good, in fact, I drove out there this past March, during my 11-day staycation between jobs, just for a Bloody Mary. It’s that tasty.

So naturally, when my parents found this new winery that also makes jalapeño wine-based Bloodies a mere 15 minutes away, I was super excited to try one. They even offer a flight, with samples of the following:

  • Hot Shot Jalapeño Wine – a classic Jalapeño wine bursting with flavor!
  • Smokin’ Hot Jalapeño Wine – our Jalapeño wine, only smoked!
  • Hotter than Hell – a fiery blend of jalapeño, poblano, and habanero peppers. This wine will awaken any taste buds!

I really wanted to love these. Unfortunately, I didn’t even like them very much. The presentation was great, but the flavor, not so much. They all kinda tasted like dishwater (and in the case of the Smokin’ Hot, smoky dishwater). Not even close to the excellent one Bailey’s Run serves.

Guess I’ll continue making that 49-mile drive to New Glarus for my jalapeño wine-Bloody Mary fix.

Thanks again to my mom for participating in these blog posts. I’ll have my dad do it next time they visit (which won’t be until spring 2025…something about those Wisconsin winters scares them off).

  1. Oh man the 🔥 wines sound delicious, too bad i can’t do any degree of hot anymore without triggering a headache 😕 I’d love to know what you have dvd wise, I still have two cases full a combo of tv shows and movies. Still working through all The Bowery Boys films

    1. The majority are movies – mostly dramas and comedies; everything from (500) Days of Summer to Zombieland, The Godfather to Goodfellas, The Breakfast Club to American Beauty, and so forth and so on. We also have some TV collections (Arrested Development, Breaking Bad, Scrubs, Barney Miller, The Twilight Zone, etc.) and a bunch of concert films and documentaries – Nirvana, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones.

  2. I dislike wine intensely and don’t like spicy stuff so I would be a hater. Love the Q and A; we learn so much about people that way. (through others’ eyes) We are in a 2 day Heat Advisory right now (90s) but it won’t last. Thankfully, our weather is quite changeable.

    1. Yeah, I don’t see you ever ordering a Bloody Mary, wine-based or not! Hopefully, this is the last of your heatwaves for the year.

  5. That was fun! Thanks for the answers, Mom. Mark, I’m also a Taurus who loved lasagna as a kid. My mom never made it, so I had to wait till we went to an Italian restaurant.

I’m impressed with your pie crust. I’ve resorted to the Pillsbury ones because I don’t want to buy Crisco. Even though I know it’s in the Pillsbury ones, I think it’s gross and don’t want it in my cupboard. I know 🙄🙄🙄🤓

    1. Thank you for asking the questions. They were great blog fodder! Shortening is one of those things we hardly ever use. In fact, the only other thing I use Crisco for is making homemade refried beans – and it’s been a couple of years. Good lord, that can must have been pretty old…

  8. Eye rolling and manifestation being put down to stubbornness? I’m a Taurean (and stubborn, natch) so why am I so rubbish at manifestation. Is it ‘cos I don’t truly believe…?

We’ve been enjoying some ludicrously tasty flat peaches – obviously not totally – but they are only rounded in one plane. Never seen them before, but if I find out what they are, I shall provide you with the info in case you want to plant more trees 😀

    1. Regardless of how stubborn you are, you can only manifest if you truly believe! So, take a page from Steve Perry: don’t stop believin’! Hold ON to that feeling.

Flat peaches? Are you sure somebody didn’t run them over whilst driving?

  9. There is so much good stuff here, but I’m still caught up on the ingenuity of using the wall mount as bookends for the DVDs. Brilliant design!

    1. I’m glad you noticed that! I have to hand it to Tara, that was a brilliant idea. Saves space by eliminating the need for bookends (with the exception of the top shelf).

  10. I think there’s a reason people choose to drink a lovely glass of wine over a distilled spirit. Adding jalapeno or other stuff to it seems wrong. I suppose that makes me a wine snob but I’ll own it. A grassy vino Verde or a deep earthy Malbec stands fully without trendy gimmicks trying to increase sales potential.

    1. It’s my unbridled zest for adventure, AA! Anybody can go to a winery and order wine. Yawn. I like to try new things! And now I know next time not to order the Bloody Mary. I do believe that’s called killing two birds with one stone.

As for SPAM, what can I say? It’s spam-tastic!

  12. The shelves look great! I recognize the box series of LOTR. We have the same set.

Until you move next year, you kid! I sure hope you kid!

What a bummer that the closer drinks didn’t live up to the farther away variety.

Tonight Hubby and I are going to see Rain and Oceans–cover bands for Creed and Pearl Jam, respectively. I hope it’s good! Well, I saw Oceans once, nearby, for free, and they were great. (Oh yea, I blogged about that.) This time it’s far away and not free (but only $12.30 for two tickets), and hotter than your smokey jalapeño wine today. Please be outdoors; please be outdoors!

  17. I like how the brackets that hold up the shelves also act as bookends (or in this case, DVDends). I got bad news for you, though, buddy: There’s only a little bit of room left on those shelves. I don’t know how often you buy DVDs, but if you life long enough, you may run out of shelf space!
New Glarus is on the list, by the way. Maybe once we get Bobbie 2.0…

    1. No worries; the top shelf just has video games, which I’d be happy to move elsewhere in a pinch. Plus, we have room for one more shelf below if it comes to that. Really though, we aren’t buying very many DVDs these days.

  19. Nice! We have apple trees, so some years, many many pies and galettes are baked and frozen (and gifted). Your crust looks wonderful!

We also still buy DVDs — rarely, but we do. I know we have more than 100, but not as many as you, and it’s nice when we want to watch old favorites. Not everything is streaming for free and if we love it, we’d like to own it.
