The best way I can describe the Wisconsin State Fair is, it’s like the Jefferson County Fair on steroids. In the best way possible.

Well, other than the traffic.

We left the house about 45 minutes before the fair opened Saturday morning in order to beat the crowds. The fairgrounds in West Allis are 54 minutes away, so in theory, our timing should have been almost perfect.

Emphasis on in theory. As soon as we exited the freeway – a mere mile from our destination – we came to a dead stop. We inched along so slowly, I said to Tara, “It may take us an hour to get there.”

It took us an hour to get there.

But we figured there would be crowds. The weather was perfect (if sunshine and 70 degrees is your jam), and it was the next to last day. Of course people were going to flock there!

The first thing we did upon entering the 200-acre Fair Park was consult a map. Seriously, the fairgrounds are enormous. But the map was confusing, so we figured we’d just start walking and see where our feet led us. The first place they led us was to food. We were starving by then, and that’s pretty much the point of the fair!

The Italian sausage sandwich and potato pancakes were good, but the big draw was the Original Cream Puff®. This is far and away the most popular food item at the Wisconsin State Fair. Everyone raves about them, and this year marked the 100th anniversary of the iconic treat. Our governor even proclaimed Saturday as “Cream Puff Day” in honor of the occasion. Naturally, we wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

We entered the Original Cream Puff Pavilion and walked what felt like half a mile to reach the end of the line. Fortunately, it moved very quickly, and before long we had our decadently pillowy cream puffs in hand – original for me, chocolate birthday cake for Tara.

I’m happy to say they totally lived up to the hype. They’re big and messy but light as air and not too sweet. Lots of people were ordering six-packs to go. I’m used to seeing that with beer, not cream puffs, but I get it.

The most unusual – and honestly, one of the tastiest – things we tried was a beverage. Specifically, a Purple Pickle Lemonade.

Rivergirl would probably roll over in her grave if she were dead, but I’m telling you, this drink was very good. Tart, briny, with just a hint of sweetness. And we didn’t even get it with the optional vodka!

Now that I think about it, why didn’t we get the optional vodka?!

Oh, well. That might have masked the wonderful pickle flavor. Oddly enough, we didn’t order anything alcoholic. Didn’t even get cheese curds. How very un-Wisconsinlike on both counts!

We did try root beer flavored milk, though. Which was quite delicious. It tasted like a root beer float. They were also selling salted caramel and strawberry cheesecake flavors. Wisconsin really takes this whole “America’s Dairyland” designation seriously, yo.

After about four hours, we were all fair’d out. We’d seen everything we wanted to (minus the pig races, because sadly the bleachers were full when we arrived), and while there were plenty more interesting foods we’d have loved to try – cheese curd tacos, anyone? mashed potatoes on a stick? pickle pizza? – we couldn’t eat another bite if we wanted to. We were back home by 5:00 after a very full and fun day.

Next time we go, we’ve decided it will be on a weekday morning, when it’s less crowded and traffic isn’t backed up a mile.

  2. OK now that I’ve actually read the post instead of just cheating to have the first comment, I will say that that sounds like a ton of fun, minus the traffic, of course. I hate traffic. But now at least you guys know for next time. I would want to try everything. Even the pickle pizza even though that sounds disgusting. I would still try it of course. I’m quite shocked by no cheese curds but so awesome about the cream puffs. Glad the line moved quickly.

    1. Our reasoning was simple: we can get cheese curds anywhere, but root beer milk is a little harder to come by.

The pickle pizza looked fantastic. Just a cheese pizza with pickle slices, but they were very generous with those slices. For a pickle fanatic like me, I’d be down.

      1. Definitely sound curd logic. You for sure gotta take advantage of the stuff you can’t find elsewhere. The root beer milk is intriguing. I feel like only pickle fanatics like you could appreciate that pizza. I would’ve tried the pickle drink. I agree that w/o the vodka would help you better appreciate the pickle flavor. You didn’t mention the exorbitant price of everything. I guess we all just know.

      2. Actually, nothing was too terribly expensive. Like, $8 for a bratwurst? That’s pretty reasonable!

        Liked by 1 person

      3. True. I was expecting $15 or something. Around these parts, $15 would be considered “reasonable.”

      4. This is the Midwest. Things aren’t nearly as expensive out here!

      5. I know. I know. Sigh. Too bad the weather has utterly spoiled us, despite our Midwestern upbringing.

  3. Repeat after me… pickles do not belong in lemonade! I’m totally there for the cream puffs though, they look divine. Shame you had to miss the pig races, but if you were holding one of those puffs the porkers may have left the track.
    😉

    1. Ahh, but I disagree. The pickles were a very nice complement to the lemonade. This should be a standard beverage choice everywhere!

  4. This is my kind of fair–all about the food. And drink. I would very much like a purple pickle lemonade. I used to drink pickle juice as a child (don’t judge, there was never enough food). I don’t think I could have resisted the cheese curds. Was there poutine?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. As a guy who drank pickle juice whenever visiting Pike Place Market in Seattle, I’m certainly not one to judge!

As a matter of fact, there was a cheese curd poutine. I’m beginning to realize we barely scratched the surface of all those available foods. We’d need a few days to really do the fair justice and try everything we wanted.

  5. You had me with the photo and then this…”We entered the Original Cream Puff Pavilion…” There’s a PAVILION for cream puffs? Clearly, I’m missing out. And now I’m seriously hungry. 😜

    1. There is, and sure enough, it’s legitimately pavilion-sized. Full of people assembling cream puffs behind a glass wall. Talk about inspiring!

  8. Oh man I would take a vacation to that fair just for the original cream puff. So hard to find any place that makes a damn good cream puff, well there is one in Northern Pa heading towards upstate NY “Binghams” in Kingsley Pa 😁

    1. I didn’t really know what to expect, as I’ve only ever had a couple of cream puffs in my life. I don’t remember them being that big and fluffy.

  9. For some reason (sometimes travel, sometimes procrastination), we’ve missed the last several county fairs in our area. I usually go for the landscaping, art, and photography shows, and gadget demos. The food has never been a big draw for me, but sometimes I wish I had the enthusiasm that those who love all the offerings have. It’s hard to imagine that the cream puff “wasn’t very sweet” I think I’d go into a sugar coma (and I have a sweet tooth). It sounds like you two had a great time despite the traffic at the beginning.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I avoid sugar as much as possible and can’t stand anything too sweet, so the fact that the cream puffs weren’t was a pleasant surprise! We had a great time and I look forward to many return trips over the years.

  12. Oh, right. The traffic. Another reason I’m not a fair-goer.
You didn’t have the cheese curds?! Well, I guess you’re still new Wisconsinites. Mistakes are bound to happen. Don’t worry. You’ll get better at it. 😉
Remember that wheel-shaped Paris-Brest “cake” I posted about a while back. That’s basically a cream puff. So if you’re hankering for another one without the traffic jam, try that!

    1. You really are the anti-fair poster child, aren’t ya? And your state fair is supposedly awesome. Plus, it’s right there in St. Paul! I think you’re missing out!

We just figured we can (and do) get cheese curds at plenty of other places. I doubt the fairs are any better than, say, what we can get at our local pub or even the American Legion on the river.

You’re right about the Paris cake thing! I’m sure it’s delicious, but then, I’d have to actually make it…

  13. Wonderful photos!! What great weather and food choices – you guys do that thang up! You know our Alaska State Fair weather was miserable, but camping on the grounds meant zero traffic and the ability to go back and forth to eat in our own kitchen. I think in three days we ate less fair food than you did in four hours though. Bravo!!

    1. Nope. I asked Tara if she wanted to do the ferris wheel or the giant slide or the sky glider, and was met with a nope, nope, and nope. But she did say she’s a fan of the Scrambler. Maybe next time.

    1. Honestly, I’m pretty unfamiliar with cream puffs. In the PNW, as you are no doubt aware, elephant ears are more popular. And in Rapid City it was funnel cake. I love the differences in regional cuisine.

  18. I’ve been to that cream puff pavilion, and they really do run it like a well-oiled cream puff pavilion. Did they also have brownies? I seem to remember they were famous for those at one point, but maybe I’m just dreaming. I wonder if you can get their cream puffs year-round anywhere up there.

I’d definitely try that purple pickle lemonade, with or without vodka—it sounds delicious!

Did you and Tara go on the sky ride? 😊

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Nope; no brownies. Come to think of it, I didn’t see a brownie anywhere. If there were any, they were probably pickle flavored!

Ha, no sky ride for Tara this time. I asked!
