We’ve been under a Flood Warning for, no exaggeration, two months nonstop. As the river levels have slowly dropped, it finally expired this morning…and this afternoon, they’re forecasting the possibility of thunderstorms with heavy rain.

Isn’t it ironic? Don’t you think?

(Nope, just like the song, not ironic at all. More of a bummer if the river starts rising again.)

It’s been a pretty good weekend. And a pretty long weekend. The credit union Tara works for gives employees a paid day off on their birthday, and since hers was Saturday, she got Friday off. She talked me into taking a personal day myself, which didn’t exactly require a lot of arm twisting. Three-day weekends rarely do, and this was my first day off since starting at CheeseGov, so it felt overdue. Can you believe I’m approaching four months there already?

Anywho. We tossed around all kinds of ideas for something fun to do on Friday. Kayaking, hanging out in Madison, and swimming naked in a kiddie pool full of Jell-O were all on the table, but we decided instead to do a bit of exploring (only because we were out of lime Jell-O; I’ve found the grape just doesn’t cut it).

After driving to Delavan and browsing a couple of vintage stores, we stopped by The Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago – home of the paper bag pie. Since I just baked, and froze, a peach pie, we didn’t buy one. But we did pick up some food items and had an impromptu picnic with cheese curds, crackers, thinly sliced roast beef, and macaroni salad out front.

Our next stop was Boerner Botanical Gardens in Hales Corners, a suburb of Milwaukee. Tara has a membership to Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison, which includes reciprocal free admission to a number of other gardens, like Boerner. This saved us $18, but honestly, it would have been worth the price of admission. I may not obsess over gardening like my wife, but I still appreciated the beauty contained within these 40 acres.

Our final destination was Buckatabon Tavern and Supper Club in Wauwatosa. (Rhymes with “chuck a robin,” by the way, which I’d have never guessed.) We’d stopped there for brunch in December and vowed to come back for an actual supper instead. Tara’s birthday gave us the perfect excuse.

Buckatabon was conveniently located less than 20 minutes from the botanical gardens. We’d made a reservation for 6:15, but got there an hour early, thinking we might wander around downtown ‘Tosa, as the locals call it, but it was kinda hot and we’d been on the go for seven hours already, so we asked if they could seat us early, like a couple of old fogies. They were more than happy to oblige.

Guys, everything was fantastic. We started with an appetizer of burrata cheese, charred pepper-peach salsa, arugula, Coca-Cola gastrique, and garlic parmesan toast points. Geez Louise, that was mighty tasty!

The rest of the meal wasn’t bad, either. I’d normally do a Friday fish fry, but the allure of prime rib proved impossible to resist. This was the smallest of three sizes. I can’t imagine ordering a King cut (16 oz.) or a Buck cut (24 oz.)!

Tara got a wild mushroom stroganoff (not pictured, but equally delicious). We were much too full for dessert, but all in all, it was a great way to celebrate her birthday.

We did more celebrating of her birthday Saturday evening by bar-hopping around our quaint little town. We stopped at five different places, all within a four-block radius (gotta love Wisconsin!). This sounds like a lot, but it was over the course of many hours.

Alas, there is no celebrating today, unless you consider pulling weeds a fun way to pay tribute to a birthday girl. I personally do not, but I suppose the weekend has had enough fun activities to warrant a few chores.

  1. Happy Birthday to Tara! The gardens look delightful, but not as delightful as mushroom stroganoff sounds.

  2. The gardens look inviting . . . as long as the heat behaved itself or ample shade was provided.

Happy Birthday to the Birthday Girl! Glad you were able to extend your weekend in her honor.

    1. It was warm and shade was in short supply, but at least it wasn’t humid. That made it pretty bearable!

  6. Happy birthday weekend Tara! I just love how you two go on adventures for a day, packing in food, bars, sightseeing, silliness. Would you please plan my days for me? (Also, I have no idea what some of those food items are, but I’m going to zoom in to the pics for sure.)

    1. We sure do love our adventures! Maybe I could find a second calling as a professional Adventure Guide…

      1. You could test your adventure guide mettle by finding something for us to do within a 40-min drive of where we’re stock now, Livingston, Tx. I’ll warn ya: We’ve already gone out for ice cream and tacos.

  8. That her job gives birthdays off is amazing. Do they count it as one of her personal days, or it’s truly gratuitous? Sounds like you spent the day really well. I’m not even sure what all those food items you mentioned are. That steak is large! I can’t imagine who could eat the actual large. Someone from Pawnee??

    1. It’s completely separate from her personal days. Fun fact: once upon a time, when I managed an inside sales team, I proposed giving employees their birthdays off, too. Management refused to budge. I wish more companies would do that!

I bet Ron Swanson could make a dent in the Buck cut.

      1. Oh, Ron Swanson would eat two then go out for eggs after.

      2. I “literally” (Chris Traeger) watched the episode last night where Andy, April, and Ron go to dinner with Andy’s Women’s Studies professor (and Chris joins them). I’m pretty sure Ron ordered a third steak. Then he indeed invited everyone to join him for eggs after. (Poor Chris in this episode.)

What is this, my third? Fourth time through this show? Still not old.

  12. Happy Birthday to Tara! Sounds like a really lovely weekend, especially those beautiful gardens and all the delicious food. Baby D could easily put away a buck portion of prime rib, but he’s the only one I know who could.

  13. You two always find the best places to visit This looked like a lot of fun, and honestly, jello pools are so overrated. Happy belated birthday to Tara!

When I saw the restaurant you went to on Instagram, it reminded me of the supper club featured on Top Chef. So many cool restaurants. Adding another to my ever-growing list.

    1. Everyone knows Jell-O slip-n-slides are where the real fun is!

You’re right; Buckatabon does sort of resemble one of the restaurants on Top Chef. Which doesn’t surprise me as that seems to be a very Wisconsin look.

  14. I like you enough to spare you my singing of “happy birthday”, even from afar, and just wish it in words 😀

Riddle me confused: if the pie at home is already frozen, why would a pie lover such as “Mar” (from the pie post 🙂 ) pass on an opportunity to pick up a(nother) delectable pie? 🙂

    1. Ha. Thank you?

I did suggest having Tara pick out a pie, but she was more interested in the pumpkin bar with cream cheese frosting. It may have been out of season, but damn, that was an excellent choice!

  18. Happy belated birthday to Tara. I’ve not heard of an employer giving a paid day off for your birthday, but I’m going to inquire with mine. 🤗

A day spent at a gorgeous garden, then an amazing dinner sounds like the perfect celebration. I’ve not met a burrata that I didn’t love.

    1. True story: when I was the inside sales manager for the Portland branch of a large company many years ago, I proposed to my boss giving our employees their birthdays off. He shot down the idea faster than you can say…umm, something really fast. I love that some companies actually do this!

      1. It’s nice that those particular companies can actually afford to have people take a day off. That is not always the case in business.
