During one of our adventures last year, we picked up From Crook to Cook: Platinum Recipes from Tha Boss Dogg’s Kitchen, aka, Snoop Dogg’s cookbook. It was one of those kitschy novelty shops that sells all kinds of oddball items. Tara couldn’t resist.

Here’s the dope: we were pretty high on trying some of the recipes. But the blunt truth is, between all the grass in the backyard and other household chores, this joint kept us busy throughout 2023. We shelved the book and kind of forgot about it.
Last weekend we had the munchies, so we dug it out again and leafed through the pages, our mouths watering over the possibilities. The Spaghetti de la Hood, Baby Got Back Ribs, and Mack and Cheese all sounded scrumptious, but we settled on Faux-tisserie Chicken with Vegetables. Snoop’s description of the dish won us over:
Don’t act like your girl really thought that rotisserie chicken you served up on your wack-ass date night didn’t come directly from your local supermarket. You ain’t foolin’ no one but your own dumb ass. Quit acting like flippin’ one of these birds is reserved for those in a fancy floppy chef’s hat. You can do it, just like Adam Sandler in “The Waterboy.” Like the homie MC Breed said, “AIN’T NO FUTURE IN YOUR FRONTIN’.” Never was, cuz.
There’s nothing too unique about the recipe. You take a whole chicken, rub a spice mixture (salt, pepper, thyme, garlic powder, paprika, onion powder) over it, wrap it in plastic wrap for a few hours, then roast it with onions, garlic, carrots, and fingerling potatoes. Snoop does it low and slow, 275° for three hours. Let me reefer you to the finished dish straight outta the oven:

It was quite tasty! Supper was pretty good in the MarTar hood that night. We ended things on a sweet note with his Hey Auntie Banana Puddn’. What really made this dessert gangsta was the addition of dark rum to the whipped cream, not to mention the layers of crushed Nilla wafers. As much as I like rum, the 3 Tbsp. called for is too much. A little bit goes a long way. Even minus the whipped cream though, it was pretty killer.
We will for sure be trying other recipes from Snoop’s cookbook in the future. Maybe his Stack’d Up Flap Jacks or Mile-High Omelette for breakfast. The No Limit Po’ Boy and Lunch Briz-eak sound like good midday pick-me-ups. Hell, he’s even got a four-course Thanksgiving meal. Maybe this year we’ll have a Very Snoop T-Day with Ain’t No Jive Herbed Turkey and Gravy, Good Good Green Beans, M.O.P. Mash Out Potatoes, and My My My Sweet Potato Pie.
November can’t get here fast enough, dawg.
What’s cookin’ in your hood these days?
