I was reading a post the other day in which the blogger talked about how she and her husband had lucked into getting front row seats for a helicopter ride one time. I replied that you couldn’t pay me enough money to ever fly in a helicopter, and she was sort of astounded by my response.

Really?? she wrote. I don’t know why that surprises me so much. I’m not an adventurous person but I thought it was super cool.

I consider myself an adventurous person by nature in other regards. Trying new foods? Sure. Moving halfway across the country to a brand new state, and then doing it all over again four years later? You betcha. But a helicopter is a hard no for me. Chalk it up to my general fear of flying, coupled with my general fear of decapitation. I don’t mind if someone says I’ve lost my head or am out of my mind, but I’d rather they didn’t mean so literally.

Most of you know I get up at ungodly o’clock to take a four(ish)-mile walk before work four days of the week. It’s a habit I started in 2015 after nearly dying.

(Diagnosis: an acute case of Overexaggeritis. Oh, and diabetic ketoacidosis.)

Anyhoo. I genuinely enjoy these solitary early morning walks, especially this time of year, when they take place outdoors instead of on the treadmill. I’m treated to some pretty great scenery most days.

This morning was particularly interesting. I was walking through the woods, just a few paces from my backyard, when it felt like I’d wandered onto the set of a Disney movie. I rounded a corner, and there was a flock of wild turkeys on the trail in front of me, with a bunch of babies in tow. At the same exact moment, two deer went galloping off into the underbrush, and a bunch of startled birds took flight. All that was missing was a cricket in a top hat.

I was kinda disappointed at least one of those animals didn’t burst into song.

Maybe we can work on our harmonies next time, fellas.

The front page story in today’s Wisconsin State Journal was devoted to our extreme drought conditions.

This is the driest it’s been since at least 2012. Our rainfall deficit since May 1 is over 8″ and corn, soybean, and strawberry crops are all in jeopardy. The article stated it would take an inch of rain every week for several weeks to even make a dent in the drought.

Well, one of their staff writers must have been playing with a Magic 8 Ball, because that headline proved prescient. This was what Hwy. 26 looked like on my drive home today.

Ask and ye shall receive, I suppose.

It rained for hours and hours. It thundered and lightninged, too. And when all was said and done, we ended up with well over an inch of glorious, welcome, much-needed rain. I might have been imagining things, but I could swear I heard my lawn emit an audible sigh of relief. Maybe it’ll be a little less brown and crisp for a few days.

We have a long ways to go yet, but this was a great start.

I’m really hoping tomorrow’s headline reads, A MILLION DOLLARS FOR MARK PETRUSKA … PLEASE, ’cause I could really use some extra pocket cash.

  1. I’m laughing about the losing your head line. Helicopters are funny aren’t they? They don’t look like they should be able to fly.

Love your morning scenery. It’s gorgeous! When you see the cricket in a top hat, I hope you get a picture! That’ll get a headline for sure – and maybe even a million dollars for Mark Petruska.

Glad to hear you got some rain. I’m pretty sure I can hear your tractor cheering from here!

    1. Airplanes don’t look like they should fly either! Hence my reluctance to board them.

Believe it or not, the lawn looks noticeably greener already this morning.

  3. I used to get up at five to walk Chester before work. I hated the hour but actually miss the sounds of the birds waking up. And yes the sunrises were beautiful. Good luck with your plan to win!

    1. Most of the time I listen to podcasts while walking…except when my trek takes me through the woods, as it did yesterday. Then I just listen to the sounds of nature.

Any thoughts to be out hunting one of those turkeys come November? Or are they protected?

    1. Several people have asked me that, ha. I think I’ll just source my turkey from the grocery store like always this year.

  7. I could use “some extra pocket cash” (aka “Chump change” by the filthy rich) myself, so if you come into that million and it starts burning a hole in your pocket, I’d be happy to receive as much cash as you can send to avoid fueling the fire.

No need to thank me. Just knowing that I’m helping a fellow human being is all the thanks I need.

  8. That last sunrise photo with the stark trees is fabulous. I don’t blame you getting up early for that.
Those turkeys are positively strutting. Clearly yours are more confident than ours…
Glad you finally saw some rain. We had 2 years of dry summers but not this year. We’ve been having one sunny day a week for the past month and a half. The lawn loves it but ugh, the humidity is making me feel moldy.

    1. Thanks! I believe that photo was taken in April. It’s the oldest in the batch but very representative of what I often see.

I’ve been jealous of your rain for months. Your humidity? Not so much. Aside from a few days here and there, ours hasn’t been all that bad. Yet.

      1. We’re extremely hot and humid right now. Still raining 4-5 days out of 7 with temps in the high 80’s….. it sucks.

  9. I’m not super keen on going on a helicopter, either. The overloud *thwack thwack* of the rotors is my first objection, and having no doors doesn’t help either. I’m not crazy about flying on airplanes either, but at least they have bathrooms, food, and movies.

    1. It’s crazy to me that you can be flying thousands of feet in the air in a contraption THAT DOESN’T EVEN HAVE A DOOR!

  10. We did a helicopter ride over the Badlands of South Dakota and a Hot Air Balloon ride over Palm Springs, CA . . . and we survived!

And, as predicted, both pilots, when asked “how long have you been doing this?,” replied . . . “Today is my first day!”

My brother was greeted on his deck on July 4th by a Wild Turkey and its poults . . . who felt that Ben Franklin was right ~ “we shoulda been a contender!”

I’m sure the folks in NY and VT would love to send some rain your way. Too bad we can’t order rain from Amazon.

    1. Ahh, the Badlands. How I miss them! But I was plenty content to drive through them or keep my feet planted firmly on the ground while hiking some of the trails.

  14. I’m not much of an early riser but whenever I’ve had to get up before the sun, I’ve always enjoyed seeing the world at a time I’m usually sleeping. The sky as it lightens slowly really puts on a show. Good for you for keeping up the habit for so long.

Big pass on helicopters here too. I probably would have done it when I was younger and invincible, but now that I know I could die, I’d really rather not.

Lucky you for getting rain. I’m holding no hopes for the same thing here.

    1. Getting up for those walks this time of year is easy. It’s bright, it’s beautiful, it’s warm enough to go out in shorts and a t-shirt most mornings. But in a few months, when it’s dark and chilly? That’s a little tougher. I do it though, even if that means bundling up and carrying a flashlight.

  16. I should do a post on Things You Couldn’t Pay Me To Do. A helicopter ride would be on that list! They seem to crash all the time, so that’s a hard pass from me, too.

You’ve been seeing some gorgeous sunrises. And it’s funny that we both posted turkey pictures this week. I love that you saw some babies. But since the deer ate all my petunias last week, I do not care for that photo. Have a great weekend, Mark!

    1. Your comment scared me for a second. I thought you were going to say the deer ate some baby turkeys, which would have been a truly terrifying thing given that they are herbivores!

  18. I would definitely ride the front seat of a helicopter. But then, I used to fly Cessna 150s for fun.

BTW, helicopters don’t actually fly, they just beat the air into submission.

Nice sunrise pics. Guess you need to find a top hat with headphones built in…

  19. Love the flight and decapitation lines. I would totally do a helicopter ride. Heights are my biggest fear, but the sheer coolness factor (like that Space Needle incident) would win me over. Your morning walks are incredible. Maybe you need to break into song first and see if the animals chime in. Try your name in the headline first, and if that doesn’t work, maybe suggest mine. (I wonder how many others comment along those lines.)

It wasn’t until I read your post that I realized you were lying down on the glass floor of the Space Needle. I could not figure out the angle!

    1. Oh, and I have a very healthy fear of flying, but I’ve been in a helicopter six times now and it is WAY better than an airplane; feels like there is more control and not just speeding willy-nilly UP as high as you can go.
