I don’t know what Wisconsin did to piss off Mother Nature, but the ol’ gal is really letting us have it lately. On top of an intensifying drought, this week we’ve been plagued with smoke and haze so thick, at one point our air quality was the worst in the nation.

What’s next: a plague of locusts?!

(Knock on wood. I’d better not give her any ideas.)

Actually, what’s next is humidity. Today’s dewpoint is hovering around 74°, which translates to very muggy conditions. Actual temp at the moment is 86°, but it feels like 94°.

So this is what humidity feels like!

Because I tend to obsess over things easily—I know, this is probably a shock to most of you—I bookmarked AirNow and found myself hitting refresh every hour to track our air quality. When it crossed the 300 threshold and reached the Hazardous level, I flew into a mad panic, tearing open the front door and racing down the street, startling the neighbors while screaming at the top of my lungs, “The sky is falling! The sky is falling!”

J/K. But how funny would that have been?

Here’s what it looked like on Lake Mendota on Tuesday, with downtown Madison in the background.

Now, I’ve heard a lot of people saying nasty things about Canada, placing the blame on our neighbors to the north, as if this were all some diabolical Canuck plot to set half their country on fire in order to smoke out the pesky U.S. I refuse to stoop to that level. After all, Canada gave us Rush, the egg carton, Trivial Pursuit, poutine, and Howie Mandel. All good things in my book! Sure, there have been some missteps, like Nickelback and Justin Bieber. But pobody’s nerfect.

The real culprit, of course, is climate change. How much hotter does the planet have to get before people are willing to make the sacrifices needed to combat this mounting crisis? I’m the world’s most optimistic person (Wynne Leon is a close second), but even I fear it’ll happen too late or not at all.

I’m willing to do my part. Volkswagen is reviving the classic Microbus in 2024 and coming out with this nifty version called the VW ID.Buzz. Buzz instead of Bus because it’s electric.

#clever.

I’ve lusted after a VW Bus all my adult life. One that offsets my carbon footprint and can carry surfboards on its roof is a dream come true, never mind the fact that I am not a surfer, have no desire to ever take up surfing, and the Midwest is about as far from an ocean as you can get. Just the fact that it can is enough for me!

This won’t be happening any time soon. My Kona has many years and thousands and thousands of miles left, but when the time comes, I’ll be manifesting the shit out of owning one of these. I’m so confident, I’ll go ahead and put it out there right now for the whole world to see:

My next vehicle will be a VW ID. Buzz. Mark my words.

In the meantime I’ll just muddle through, hoping the air quality improves. It was so bad yesterday, they cancelled the concert in the park we’d been planning on attending. Not that it would have been very pleasant when the air is so thick you can practically chew it.

Are you affected by the Canadian wildfire smoke? What’s your favorite export from the Great White North? What will you be driving next (besides your partner crazy)?

  1. I’m constantly amazed we don’t have any smoke. They’re our direct neighbor to the north and yet our skies are clear. Or they would be if it would stop raining.
As for the bus, the husband’s nephew used to buy and restore the old ones. He was always working on revamping custom interiors… until he got married and had 2 children. Bye bye vans, hello daycare and swing sets.

  2. Oh man I would love the buzz but got no place to charge it at my shitty apartment complex ya know 🫤, sigh smelled the smoke today in Pa.. dealt with scratchy eyes & headache all day from the doors at work constantly opening and closing, not to mention all the ancient dust I normally work around.

    1. My eyes were definitely itchy when the smoke was at its worst. Maybe in a few years you’ll be in a position where a Buzz makes sense.

AirNow doesn’t work for 🇨🇦 but now I know there are several cities with the name Toronto all over America, 5 to be exact. 😀

    1. America never has been much for originality when it comes to names. New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New Mexico…not to mention London, Paris, Toronto…and all the Portlands (even in places without ports).

  5. Well you know from experience that we burn up every summer. Usually it’s contained in large part to Eastern WA but this year my West side wants to play as well. Should have expected that after the great ridge fire a few years ago as it moved downhill toward my little town. It’s going to be a fun summer 😦

I love the idea of a new VW but that one looks really spacey. It just doesn’t seem to have the same vibe. If someone wants to give me one though and outfit it for camping road trips I will gladly say yes and just deal with the rather odd new look.

Try not to breathe unless you really need to… 😉

    1. Of course, you can never duplicate the allure of the original VW Bus. Especially the classic years with the split windshield. I like the spacey look of the new one and the versatility, assuming you’ll be able to use it as a camper, too.

  6. No smoke here, but as Rivergirl said, it won’t stop raining. Not a fan of EVs, but since I finally got another Jeep, I am a happy girl.

And why does Nickelback get such a bad rap? I actually admit that I like their music. Although, they aren’t Sturgill Simpson, but they have some catchy tunes.

    1. I turned to the internet to answer your Nickelback question. There are long Reddit threads discussing why Nickelback is so reviled. The gist of it is, they make mediocre music for greedy record executives content on coasting by with mediocre music, never attempting to challenge themselves artistically. Certainly, there are worse bands and much worse music out there.

  10. What? I get to ride shotgun on Mark’s optimism train?? Oh my, I’m so honored that I forgot the rest of my comment.

Canada gave us the egg carton? How interesting! Sorry about the air quality but the Buzz looks awesome. I have NO DOUBT you can manifest that, my friend. A buzz is great in almost every sense of the word – except maybe a buzz cut!

I hope you guys enjoy your weekend. And as an optimist, I know you will!!

I didn’t know about the egg carton, either. They also invented the paint roller, zipper, incandescent light bulb, Wonderbra, pager, and instant mashed potatoes, among others. Pretty savvy, our neighbors to the north!

Wednesday, the odor was horrific, which was the first time I actually smelled the smoke since this started three or four weeks ago for us. My favorite Canadian export is Barenaked Ladies and I’m seeing them soon!

  13. Yes we’re impacted by the Canadian wildfires, but not as much as you. My favorite thing from Canada is maple syrup. I wish I knew what I’ll be driving next, but will guess it won’t be a VW Bus. I’m more of a coupe girl.

  14. We’re only impacted by the heat dome aka heat wave that’s been hanging around for the past 3 weeks here in Texas (Houston here). Supposedly, we *might see a break next Wed-Fri? Temps will go from 99 to 92. Humidity is always the devil here and pushes heat index up by about 10 degrees. We’ve definitely seen a change in weather here especially in the last 3 years. I hope the haze clears up soon and the humidity drops! Take care!

    1. I’m trying to decide which is worse: the constant wildfire smoke or high heat indexes. Neither one sounds like much of a picnic. Hope you find some relief soon, as well!

“Canada is the country that gave us Rush…” I initially thought you meant Rush Limbaugh, but quickly realized you didn’t. Okay, Canada, I forgive you.

So, to replace my SUV, we’re looking for a more environmentally friendly vehicle. We’ve had it since 2013, and it’s been a wonderful car, but our sky is falling…anyway, we’ve recently been looking at several hybrids, but there was one car that was recently added to the mix. We’ve seen it in all sorts of odd locations and laughed because we thought, “Is this our Universe car?”

Do you want to guess what our “Universe car” is?

  19. Wow, that’s some regular Georgia weather you’re having! We weren’t really impacted by the wildfires. We bought a Toyota Tundra a couple of years ago. (I know, not exactly environmentally friendly.) After a couple of years, I am really ready for something smaller. While there are things I like about my big red truck I’ve come to think of it as a rolling blind spot.🙄 While we can’t get rid of the Tundra because we need it to tow our travel trailer, I would really, really like something smaller. I’ve always wanted a Subaru so it’s next on my wish list.

  22. We Minnesotans have been suffering from the Canadian wildfire smoke, too. (Don’t tell anyone, but I love the campfire smell it sometimes provides.) The husband had always wanted a VW bus as well, to which I said “absolutely not,” which led us to getting the Bobbie instead. And incidentally, Taylor Coach RVs – of which Bobbie is a proud model – are my favorite Canadian exports (we’re currently prepping Bobbie to try to sell it 😦 ). Hopefully I won’t need a new car until shortly after retirement, so something small and either hybrid or electric.
