NNWM/9: Stay in New Zealand

My parents are currently on a cruise halfway around the world, hopefully oblivious to all this ridiculousness. I am not sure when they’ll have access to email again – it may not be until their ship docks in New Zealand next week – but I did send them a quick note with a few words of advice.

If I were you I would STAY IN NEW ZEALAND.

Don’t come back home. America has changed. You will no longer recognize the place. Land of the free and home of the brave? Not if you’re a woman or any ethnicity other than white. But on the plus side, ain’t nobody going to take away your precious guns now.

Find a nice hobbit hole. Stock up on cheap Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. Cavort with sheep.

You don’t want to be a part of this anymore.

P.S. Can we join you?

I wasn’t even kidding. Not in the least.

For a small glimmer of hope though, read this article. Tim’s blog posts are always well-researched and thought-provoking. I don’t agree with every point, but there’s enough here to at least make me not entirely go off the deep end. Or if you really need to be talked down off the ledge, there’s always this one from our friends at Cracked.

Check this out, Mark. It’s a bit over the top, but hard to ignore. We’ve been in Mexico for two weeks and get home to Portland on Sunday. It’s tempting to just miss the plane.

As I’ve told people on fb, everyone needs to calm the fuck down. Between the pseudo-rage on social media and the paid protestors, I’m more scared of Americans than I am of Trump. And no, I didn’t vote for him or Hilary.

  Thanks for your feedback, Bijoux. I always appreciate your comments. There are tons of protesters in Portland and I sort of wish I could join them. For free.
  
  Here’s a portion of a comment I left on FB trying to bring opposing factions together while explaining my own feelings:
  
  “To me, liberalism is all about standing up for social justice and equal rights among all people, regardless of the color of their skin or their sexual orientation. It’s helping those in need, and sometimes depending on government intervention to make that happen. Trump is the absolute antitheses of all that I hold dear and important, and while we may survive the next four years unscathed (we’ll see), he has zero qualifications to hold the most important office in the world and alienated at least half the country through his hateful words and actions. This is why I am so devastated by the results of the election. It truly feels like we have rolled the clock back many decades and erased so much forward progress.
  
  As a liberal, I will devote my effort into getting the country back on track the next four years and affecting the social change I believe in. Am I angry and bitter? Absolutely. Will I complain occasionally? Of course. I wouldn’t be true to my own beliefs if I did not. But I will also be as open-minded as possible and try to look for glimpses of good wherever I can.”
  
  Yes, a calm and rational approach is best. But I also don’t think I’m out of line, given my beliefs, to feel afraid after this election. Obviously I don’t really want my parents to never come home again. I’m just afraid that the home they are coming back to won’t be the same one they left. We shall see.

People have been pushed too far. The whole Clinton “deplorables” comment put the nail in her coffin. I was personally offended by ABC News on election night when they made a comment about Ohio not being an America most people would recognize. I mean, seriously? WTF? We have more colleges/universities than most states, as well as a number of fairly big cities. We are not a bunch of drooling country bumpkins, nor are we racists, homophobes, whatever. It’s tiresome.

  I’m sure you are aware my happiest childhood memories occurred in Ohio. I’m a big fan of the Buckeye State and can vouch firsthand that it is very much a part of America.
