When Tara suggested we put up our outdoor holiday decorations last weekend, I was hesitant. It seemed a little early to me; after all, the turkey was still in the freezer. I never like to rush the holidays along. But, she pointed out, it was going to be a balmy 50°.

“We should take advantage of the weather,” she said. “Next weekend is looking a lot colder.”

She had a point. One year in Rapid City, I decided to forgo decorating on a mild and sunny weekend in mid-November because I thought it was too damn early. “I’ll do it the Saturday after Thanksgiving!” I declared, but Mother Nature f’d up those plans by dropping over a foot of snow that weekend. I stubbornly tried maneuvering the ladder around the yard when the storm was over, but this proved impossible with all the snow and ice on the ground, so we had to go without Christmas lights that first winter in our new home. I didn’t want to make the same mistake twice, so I agreed to her plan.

This turned out to be a very smart idea.

Look what yesterday did to us.

All week long, they were talking about the possibility of snow the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Talk about deja vu. With every passing day, the forecasted amount kept going up. Six, seven, eight, nine inches…hey, maybe a foot! The Weather Channel was calling this Winter Storm Bellamy. When they started naming winter storms in 2012 a lot of people scoffed, but I like the idea. Why should hurricanes have all the fun?!

Often, these storms are overhyped. But Bellamy delivered the goods.

It started snowing around 4:00 a.m. Saturday and continued nonstop for 27 hours. When all was said and done, we had 10″ on the ground this morning.

Helluva storm, especially considering how lame last winter was (not a single named winter storm and our biggest single-day snowfall was a measly 4″). I’m a snow lover who lives for this shit, so bring it on!

Check out the lights on our juniper shrub. This is why we decorated when the weather was decent!

Even though Fort Atkinson declared a snow emergency and they were advising no travel, we traveled. Just five minutes into town because we needed a Christmas tree. Technically we didn’t need a tree…we have an artificial one…but we hadn’t done a real tree in years and wanted to mix things up.

So, we spent the day decorating inside and putting up the tree while the snow piled up. Laverne and Shirley approve.

It’s going to be pretty frigid around here for the next week, so all this snow ain’t goin’ nowhere. In fact, we might get a little more.

Luckily, our trip to Green Bay on Thursday looks clear but cold. I’m less sure about driving home on Friday, but Heart and Cheap Trick are worth it.

My Black Friday involved cheese and lighthouses

Even though Thanksgiving was just a few days ago, it already feels like the distant past. We had a nice day in the basement with a fire in the wood stove, our favorite movies on TV, a delicious meal, and plenty of wine. Do I miss having family around? Sure. Do I miss hosting? Nope. There’s a lot to be said for low-key Thanksgivings.

Tara had to work on Friday but I took the day off. With Bellamy approaching I knew we’d be housebound over the weekend, so I wanted to get out and do something. Something turned into a drive to Kenosha, a little over an hour southeast of us. Why Kenosha, you ask? I have three words for you: Mars Cheese Castle.

I won’t spend a lot of time talking about it, because (future blog post alert!) if ever there was a place ripe for a Wisco Wednesday, it’s this one. Suffice it to say there was plenty of cheesy goodness. I treated myself to a Bloody Mary because of that sign, but if theirs is the “best,” the competition must be weak.

My King’s Ransom sandwich was much better, and their “world’s best cheese curds” (they’re big on superlatives there) almost lived up to the hype. I might rank them in my Top 5.

And then, since I’d never been to Kenosha before, I decided to check out the town. I made my way to Lake Michigan, because I’m a sucker for lighthouses and they had a couple.

Yes, I walked out on that pier…and damn near froze my baguettes off. The wind whipping off the lake was fierce.

All in all, it’s been a pretty great holiday weekend. Hope yours was too!

Do you like the idea of naming winter storms? When do you put up your Christmas decorations? Have you gotten any snow yet? Real tree or fake?

  1. I like when they name storms – and dude, the blue of your house looks so nice wit that snow.
Also, how fun to go for a real tree this year – and I liked that shot with Laverne and Shirley (it would make Penny and Cindy proud – ha!(

      1. we had a pale pink house in Florida (so many moons ago) and my husband did not totally love it – so I can relate to this not being Tara’s top choice – but it also makes it easier to find – “we are the light blue house” – or how do you describe it?

      3. And Mark, the funny thing is that I have followed along with enough of your posts to remember that it is Dick’s old house – and how repair folks call it that – in fact, when I saw your photo with the snow, I thought of the former homeowner for a second – hahah
        so yeah, Dick’s old house.
Also, we have seen some pretty awful house colors (putrid deep yellow – and overly bright royal blue) and so this soft blue is easy on the eyes and kind of welcoming ….

      4. I like the color a lot. Most of the other houses in the neighborhood are a boring drab shade of beige or cream. At least ours has character!

  2. Snow and flurries came early this morning. That’s about the time my wife mentioned that she really wanted to put up the outdoor lights. Really? Now? So we just finished up. As much as I want to complain, I can’t. We took care of them in the shortest amount of time that it’s ever taken. Hmmm, I wonder what’s up? I guess I had some motivation to get the job done quickly. Ha, ha.

  3. The snow is beautiful but glad I’m not there right now. I need to ease into this mid US winter thing. The bush looks like a neon brain- so cool! Upstairs decorated Friday, my fake tree went up yesterday and it’s frigid outside. We’re contemplating gettin boots for the dog so if there’s no ice (safety for the humans) we can continue our daily walks without his paws freezing to the sidewalks and paved trail system. He hates his sweater so I anticipate he will balk at foot attire.

Love your low-key Thanksgiving. Mine was higher key than I wanted with 20 people but normally my brother will host. I hope! I’m still tired.

    1. We got a Balsam Fir this year. I’m curious how much yours cost, because – holy sticker shock. Ours was $84. Granted, it’s 8.5′ tall, but still. It’s been so long since we bought a real one, I guess that’s just the going rate? Though trees in the PNW were always cheaper because they’re so abundant.

Looking forward to reading about your Thanksgiving!

      1. For that big a tree, that price seems reasonable. For whatever reason, trees aren’t particularly cheap here unless you buy a permit and cut one in the forest like we did several times. I think many of our trees get shipped out to other states. I have no proof of this, just my own suspicious nature.

We start decorating day after Thanksgiving and I’ll continue for next few days. We have 2 large fake trees and numerous small ones, plus just a lot of crap that people will cry about if it’s not displayed. Do I sound like a Grinch? 🤓

  13. I’m envious of your trip to see Cheap Trick and Heart. I saw Cheap Trick something like 35 years ago. Have they really been around that long? I doubt she can still belt out the tunes as she did back in the day, but I love Ann Wilson’s voice. We saw Pat Benatar about ten years ago, and she could still hit the high notes. As you’ve probably experienced, some performers are just a shell of themselves. Hopefully, you’ll get a great show.

As a former Midwesterner, I get a kick out of the rare occasion when we have snow on the coast here in California. One year, our school district was the only one in the county that was open after we got about three inches of snow.😊 Only seven kids from my class showed up for school that day. I didn’t have the heart to make them do any heavy academics. We went outside and built snowmen. At lunch, the superintendent decided to send the kids home. She got so much grief that day from the parents you would have thought she was abusing children.

    1. Not only have Cheap Trick been around for 52 years (!), they’re still putting out new music. They just released a new album and I’m digging some of the songs. Heart has also put out some great new music in the last 10 years. I love it when legendary bands refuse to coast on their past success (though some pull this off better than others).

Pat Benatar is on my rock ‘n roll bucket list. There aren’t many left after we cross off this week’s show.

Coming from the PNW, where an inch of snow is enough to cripple the city, it still amazes me how people aren’t even fazed by nearly a foot out here. Then again, our snow removal response is much better. By Sunday afternoon, all the roads were complete clear. We had no problem getting out and running errands.

Glad you braved the cold to get your decorations up!

  17. That Laverne & Shirley picture is very cozy and very Christmasy. I think low-key Thanksgivings are the very best Thanksgivings. Mars Cheese Castle looks like a must-visit-someday locale. The naming of Winter storms is something I’ve always been baffled about. We went our entire lives with just weather…but now different pieces of weather need naming. Then again, I long ago gave up on Winter forecasts for our area and just look out the window. Our decorations go up in three stages…indoor, outdoor, and the tree. We treat them separately because we enjoy stretching the activity out, and relaxing while doing them. We had our first snow of the season today around 8 AM, and it was all gone by noon. Still, this is early for us based on recent years…a harbinger of things to come? We’ve had a real tree for over forty Christmas seasons in a row, so why stop now? 🎄

    1. I initially balked at the idea of a real tree because of the cost. Then Tara reminded me that we spent $70 on pumpkins. Point taken, dear.

The Weather Channel started naming winter storms to raise public awareness and simplify communication. It does make it easier to track them, but your comment reminds me of the GOLU weather model, which weather buffs always joke about: Go Outside, Look Up. There’s a lot to be said for that!

I’m wondering what this winter is going to bring too, since we’re off to such a crazy start.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I know. I just have a gut feeling this winter is gonna make up for the one we had no snow. GOLU should be a t-shirt. The only problem I have with the Weather Channel is when I turn it on they aren’t covering the weather. I kinda thought covering weather was reality enough, but they apparently need to have reality shows about reality. Pumpkins and Christmas Trees…budget busters but priceless at the same time!

When do you put up your Christmas decorations? Usually, the day after Thanksgiving. This year, the Monday before.

Have you gotten any snow yet?  No, but we did dip down to freezing one night . . . with no precipitation in sight. But, worry not, I’m not jealous. 😀

Real tree or fake? We have a couple of small table top trees. We jettisoned the 8 foot tree years ago and retired the 3 foot tree last year. Now, the focus is on Santas and Reindeer. And presents.

I drove across Wisconsin in that storm. Both ways, actually. We drove through the Thanksgiving Eve storm and the Saturday storm that gave you all that snow. Not fun. Thankfully we got out of eastern Wisconsin at 7:30 am and didn’t hit anything until Wausau, but it was a little sketchy the rest of the way back to Minnesota.
