Lots of change is afoot.

For starters, I completely revamped my site. Or rather, sites. Plural. For years, I’ve had a professional(ish) site, first name last name dot com, plus a separate blog. Once upon a time, that was Mark My Words. Then, when we decided to move to South Dakota, I started a new one called Swinged Cat. So blogs, plural, too. Whew. This led to a lot of stuff in different places and was turning into a pain in the ass.

So, I decided to just combine everything together. For the past three days, I’ve been working on pulling off the tricky feat of balancing a professional website/portfolio with a blog that leans heavily on humor. But I think (hope) I’ve pulled it off. Doing so involved a new theme, new headline/tagline, and new look. The cool thing is, now I’ve got blog posts dating all the way back to 2009. Like this one.

Now, if you’re bored or suffering from insomnia, you can jump back to the beginning and read all about the many twists and turns in my life. You’ve got enough reading material to last you for months, and yes, you’re welcome.

Another fun thing: in doing all this updating, I couldn’t help but notice that I’m very close to a major milestone…

By the time you’re reading this, I’ll have had 50,000 views. Maybe you were the one who put me over the top! I would’ve had a contest if I’d been paying attention.

Sometime in the coming weeks, I’m going to switch my primary domain to my name. Fingers crossed that everything redirects correctly. So far, so good!

As if that weren’t enough, I also decided to create a new primary email account. I attempted this once before with disastrous results. Hey, it’s not my fault people see the number 69 and their minds go immediately to the gutter! That was a lesson in humility, one that my friends, family, and coworkers lorded over me for a long time. It’s taken four years for the dust to settle, but I’ve now got a spiffy new nonsexual email address and all is right with the world.

It’s no easy task setting up a new email address, by the way. You don’t realize how many subscriptions you have until you suddenly have to update them all. And that involves verification codes, two-factor authentication, and sometimes, you even have to contact another human directly for help. Madness, I tell you.

But it’s also a great excuse to purge. Shake free some of those annoying folks who slip through the spam filter. I’ve done a lot of purging and shaking over the past week.

I also suspended my automatic weekly crypto purchases. I’m not giving up on cryptocurrency, but I was getting a tad uncomfortable watching my bank account balance fall as those funds disappeared into a virtual void that may or may not ever pay off. I started thinking of all the things I could buy, but not for much longer. Like that remote starter for my car. So, I put a temporary hold on any new contributions. I’m happy to report, though, that I have made money from my investment. Check it out!

Woot! I’m in the black, baby! By a whopping $1.45.

Man, I wish this post title referred to my portfolio and not my site visitors. Guess I’ll need to figure out another way of getting rich…

Finally, in keeping with the spirit of change, ol’ Mother Nature’s about to dish out her share!

Now, we’ve been burned before. Rapid City keeps missing out on these big storms and our drought just continues to worsen. Our grass is dying before it’s even gotten a good start.

They’re saying we are right on the line between rain and snow, so it could be either showery or blizzarding this weekend. Either way, we’ll take what we can get…so long as nothing interferes with our Chicago concert tomorrow night!

Any big changes happening in your life these days?

  1. Looks amazing! I’m typing this from you consolidated website not reader in WP and I love it! Great job. I like how it’s all clean and concise and organized. Easy on the eyes. Very nice!

I have a question. Can I ask you a few about blog merging/upgrading and related in the coming weeks? I wonder if you could help me out with clarifying a few things… I might even try your new email address, the nonsexual one (ha) and see if it works. My WP is coming due in June (July? gotta check) and I want to make some new decisions but feel overwhelmed and confused. I’m not asking for all the answers, just a couple to clarify some mixed messages I’ve read about.

Hope you say yes, but I understand if you can’t afford the time. No worries!

    1. Thank you! I’m glad the visuals look good outside of WP. I haven’t tested it anywhere else.

Ask away! I know merging and upgrading can be very confusing. This isn’t my first rodeo (though it’s hopefully my last), so I’m happy to answer any questions you may have.

  2. Well, I had Covid last week. Fun times, I tell you. So, that was new. A blessing in disguise really, since I had been training new people at work for the past 6 months. A week of sleep was needed. But I would have rather had an actual vacation instead.

    1. I’m sorry to hear that but it sounds like you’re on the mend. Was this your first go-round with Covid?

      1. Yes, and hopefully my last. But most of the people I know who have contracted Covid have all been vaxxed and boosted. Sadly, I think it’s here to stay and eventually most people will be getting it….it will just be a matter of how badly one gets sick.

  3. Congrats! That $1.45 is amazing!

Seriously, it’s a pain to merge stuff and your new site looks great. Even if the domain name does still sound like animal cruelty.

    1. Ha, thanks! I’ll be switching to my name very soon…just want to make sure everybody has a chance to get used to the new site so they won’t wonder who the hell I am when I do that.

  4. I mostly read on the WP reader feature so it’s always new when I actually visit a “real” blog site. I am on the real revamped page and it looks good. Clean lines, easy to read and navigate, not fussy but with a simple and welcome layout. Your visitor count is now at 50,034! I stand in awe Mark.

    1. Woohoo! That didn’t take long to surpass 50K. Maybe I should hold a contest for 51,000? The prize can’t cost any more than $1.45 though.

  5. I think you need to refrain from bragging: $1.45. Let me know what living like a One Percenter feels like.

Congrats on the move, merge. You know what I mean. I get sweaty palms thinking about when I went from Blogger to WP. It was scary because I’m essentially clueless when it comes to that sort of thing.

You and Tara need to do a rain dance; a drought is very scary.

    1. I’m gargling with Dom Perignon and you want me to hide that fact?!

I started out on Blogger, too…but that was 13 years ago and only lasted a couple of posts. I didn’t have anything to migrate at that point!

  6. Big changes? Unless you consider cleaning out closets big changes, the answer would be no

  7. I started here in July of ‘18 and am closing in on 150,000 views. Wish I could consolidate all my old blogs but the sites died on me and they all went poof!
Congrats on the crypto windfall. Hope you take the wife out somewhere nice for dinner on that. Perhaps the park? You could beg for peanuts beside the squirrels.

      Emphasis on might.

  8. Dear Sir, We would like to offer our congratulations on your milestone achievement!

Does the combination of personal/professional mean that all responses must be dry as the expected forecast in your area on Monday? 🙂

    1. I certainly hope not. The blog is what keeps me sane!

      1. Phew, you had me wondering there for a minute. Glad to hear that, because, as Reba McEntire said: “To succeed in life, you need three things: a wishbone, a backbone and a funny bone.” 🙂

  9. By my calculation, I’m view number 50,015. Wuhoo! Congratulations!

I know how you can make big money – write the sequel!! Okay, books might not ever get us a million dollars but it’ll be well worth the sense of accomplishment. 🙂

  10. Congrats on the views and the site looks good. Sleek and professional, for sure. That is some crazy temp fluctuations. Here’s hoping for rain! (Or snow. Whatever.)

    1. It’ll probably be both at once. This type of storm is a meteorologist’s worst nightmare to predict!

      1. Good thing you didn’t become a meteorologist after all.
How do you find how many hits your blog has gotten? I looked at my stats. I looked at the main page. Now you’ve gotten me curious and I can’t scratch this itch.

      2. You should be able to add a widget somewhere to your site. It’ll display the info automatically. Mine’s in the sidebar currently.

  11. We may actually see 80 degrees this weekend, so that’s a big change! Lol, but now I’m afraid of what’s coming up behind it. The new look is mighty clean and tidy. Dare I say, professional?!

  12. Woop woop! Congrats on your milestone! That’s a huge number to get to, and sadly I think I wasn’t the one to tip you over 50k, but hey, at least I’ve contributed to a new milestone in the future. Wishing you much growth and many more views to come!

  13. Wow, Mark! This is a professional looking website and easy to navigate. I am awestruck and inspired. The new email address discussion has come up a few times in our family. It seems as if (almost) everything is linked to our email and then our passwords.

Lots of ups/downs/changes around here…such is life. I also also overdue for a blog post, at least a short update, yet I do not know where to begin. ‘I may just begin where I am…’ hmmmm…a title?…you have inspired me once again, Mark.😀 I always enjoy reading your entertaining, witty, informative posts and peeking into your world when you post photos.😀

A great looking website and I look forward to reading more!

    1. Thank you for your always kind words, E/E! I’ve been wondering what’s new in your world. I always enjoy your IG posts (you have a great eye), so it hasn’t been total withdrawal, at least.

  14. Congrats on your new & improved weblog. It’s sharp and I like that. I am in awe that you got posts from 2009 to connect here. My stuff from back then is long gone. As for a great excuse to purge the hateful spammers, I did that in January and felt victorious… at least for about a month before they found me again.

    1. I’m surprised by how easy it was to combine all those blog posts. Makes me wonder why I didn’t do it sooner!

Those spammers are like bad pennies: they just keep turning up, even when you think you’ve gotten rid of them forever.

  15. I’ll bet that was a ton of work merging all those sites and hoping it all worked out ok, which it appears to have. Just so you know, you’ll always be Swinged Cat to me…

    1. It took a bit of effort but was well worth it! And, funny story: even after we’d been dating for a while, Tara said she still thought of me by my blog name.

  16. Many congrats on that many views! I take my hat off to you for pulling it all together. I’m still spread out across three sites (personal, writing and life coaching) which means it’s a fair bit of work to maintain them all, but I’m yet to be entirely comfortable having all the versions of me inhabit the same space. So, as much as anything else, I admire you for being confident in doing so. You’ve clearly got it sorted Mark – nice work.

    1. Well, thank you so much! If you have a blog, I’d love the link. Clicking on your name takes me nowhere.

      1. Ha, you’re right, it doesn’t 😦 It used to work (not that I’d checked before on your blog, but generally). I’ll have to investigate. My general interest blog is https://debsdespatches.com/ although it’s on hiatus until next month while I take part in the A-Z blogging challenge on my coaching site. I also have a co-hosted fiction site – both are linked from the general interest one if you’ve a mind (or more importantly, the time) to look further.
